thisnis slightly different (hopefully). Instead of an outsider coming in attempting to make a universal standard, the 14 competing standards are forming a coalition to create one, single universal standard.

If done correctly, it should bring all those competing standards together rather than creating something entirely new with no support.

Awful name.

So now the going standard will be if a device does not support Thread and Matter, then its a second-class smart home product.

By the time these 2 technologies make their way into 90% of smart home products....it will be 2056.

Sole purpose of which is to eliminate the existing standards and give the big 3 a competitive stranglehold.

It is royalty-free, therefore any third party would be on equal standing, unlike ‘HomeKit Certification’ which is proprietary and a non-starter for universal (non-Apple devices) interoperability.

Notably absent from that list of Matter’s benefits:

-“Privacy”
That's a function of the smart home platform.

If the device is using Thread (Matter also supports Wi-Fi and Ethernet), it technically cannot talk to the Internet directly. Over HomeKit, Thread devices cannot talk to the Internet at all, except for updating the firmware or using the manufacturer's app.

This is my question. I'm about to close on a house and was planning on buying a bunch of smart home items, but will now hold off until we learn more. Not really thrilled with the thermostats and smoke detectors that are HomeKit compatible.
On smoke detectors I completely agree. Thermostats though? Ecobee is great.

Ecobee. Love their products. Have their own cameras, security system.
All have worked flawlessly for 3 months since purchasing.

Coming soon, even MORE trash in our landfills because all your smart appliances are no longer compatible with your phone's OS. Imagine if you paid a contractor to install a bunch of smart outlets and switches and one day they just stop working after an update. I'd be livid.
Why do you think anyone is going to stop supporting their own ecosystem? In Apple's case all they have to do is incorporate Matter support into Siri and their Home app.

Will my Nest Thermostat ever matter? Probably not.
It's such a shame Nest was bought by Google, it's such a great thermostat besides the now notorious Wifi chip mess up, I really dislike Google, bought a Nest around the time Google acquired them, didn't know sadly, mine had the infamous wifi chip break down, got a 100% refund after just under 2 years (EU warranty).
Back then there were API so you could use the in other Apps, sadly, google killed that, I wish I could have send them, but then again, I got a 100% refund.

I like my ecobee, but wouldn’t say I love it. Have had to work through some issues with them. Also, still can’t change the weather data source, whether to a HomeKit connected thermometer, or to a different web source. The one they use by default is not particularly localized.

‘Matter’. Poor branding. There will be a lot written and spoken about this and it’s a clumsy product name when used in a sentence.
No matter what, people will become madder, as their old products don’t matter anymore since they don’t support matter. However, as a matter of fact, some older products may matter more as they’re updated to support matter. What’s the matter with matter? I see no issues with the naming.

Philips just promised firmware updates for all past products. So yes.
Source for this? Last I heard they only promised support for the bridge, which defeats the purpose because you wouldn't be able to mesh the hue stuff with other thread products, only the bridge. I want to be able to use my hue stuff without a bridge at all, since thread eliminates that necessity with it being build into HomePod mini.

So now, when hackers break the Matter protocols, they'll have access to, and control of, absolutely ALL devices. Brilliant!

MUHAHAHAHAH!

I'll just walk across the room and flick the switch, thanks.

Remains to be seen. Sounds like a winning idea to me.

Alternative is to let them continue as is and continue to live on tech islands with our smart devices depending on platform.
