Billion dollar companies, why do we need to know how much they donate?

Are we keeping score?
It goes further than that. One of the unedifying aspects of the bushfires is the twitter sewer running around keeping score on how big donations are for various public figures.

In other words Apple gave less than 0.00167% of their anual income ( not revenue ). The equivalent of someone making 70k after taxes and donating $116. But since Apple employs over 132,000 people the amount Apple donated is even less than 0.00167%. Nothing to brag about.

Well if it makes other companies follow their example, what's wrong with that? What does it matter if it's for PR if charities still get a bucket of cash? Cynicism of motive doesn't put food in bellies.

Apple says that 21,000 Apple employees donated their time and donated $42 million to causes they care about. Combined with Apple's 1-for-1 donation match and $25 match per volunteer hour, the total amount donated climbed to over $100 million.

A lot of money, can't deny that, kudos to Apple/employees, .....BUT

That $25 per volunteer hour is non sense, it's volunteer work, can't put a dollar amount on it, it is zero $$$.

Wish I could match (the amount)it. ;)

A true donation is anonymous. Anything else is marketing, and it's quite shameless here.
Stories of giving inspire others to give, and donations are not required to be anonymous to be “true”. Anonymous donations, however, are.

I think it’s great that Apple matches donations—including donations of time (at $25 per hour). $100 million is a sizeable sum.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Apple acknowledging their employees. If some interpret that as Apple patting themselves on the back, I think Apples ok with that.

This is nice warm and fluffy marketing for Apple, but the paltry amount donated is laughable. It represents less than 1% of Apple's $13.7 Billion profit (not revenue) last year, and Apple didn't even donate the full amount. Yes, it's nice that they donated something, but it's not newsworthy. Want to make your donation really news, Apple? Move the decimal point one step to the right.

I guess you didn't read the headline: "Apple and Apple Employees"
Or the first sentence: "Apple today said that between its own donations and employee donations"

Am I missing something? Don't they just work out how much was raised, and how many hours were contributed to raise it, then...well...maths?

A volunteer is simply someone who chooses to undertake something beyond what they're required to do, if I volunteer to work overtime, I'd still be paid for it (or I damn well better).

Yes, it's about how Apple matched employee donations, not simply how Apple donated on their own.

"When combined with the company’s 1-for-1 donation match and $25 match per volunteer hour, Apple donated over $100 million to causes throughout the year."

Now you're being ridiculous. Having an opinion that differs from yours is not being "miserable". Have some self respect.
I think what’s lacking self respect is always assuming there’s some ulterior motive for an organization to donate money. There are many organizations that don’t donate anything despite having hundreds of billions of dollars. Always trying to find the negative in things is a very sad way to live. There’s no getting around that.

$ 13.7 quarterly profit (last quarter).

People do not get paid for volunteer work, that's why it's called that way, $25 is non sense.
Volunteer work is done in free/off time, if Apple pays for this then it isn't
volunteer work, but pretty sure they didn't, they matched the amount raised though.

Apple isn't paying their employees for volunteer work, they donate $25 for every volunteer hour plus they match their monetary donations.

If I donated $25 to a charity and volunteered an hour helping them, Apple would donate $50.

Guys guys guys, if you have bought any Apple products, you guys are donating it indirectly via Apple and their employees. :).

Good point. I'm enraged my name wasn't mentioned, do I have to buy ANOTHER product to finally get recognized? ;)

Wow, that’s some seriously bad math 😂 After using a calculator, it usually pays off to make sure the answer makes some sense.

Apple reported about $55 billion in net income for 2019. 1% would be .55 billion, or 550 million.

The donation amount was about 1/5 of 550 million, so it’s pretty easy to see it’s about .2%.

(If you want to get really fancy, you can realize that 1/5 of 550 million is 110 million, so you’ve overestimated the actual donation amount of 100 million by 10%. So you can subtract 10% of your .20 estimate and refine it to .18 as a closer estimate. The donation amount is pretty close to .18%)

Interesting apple chooses to politicize this as well as everything they do. I wish someday they would get back to building insanely great products so I could buy one.
Haven't purchased anything apple since 2012. Except TV shows and movies. No music. No services. So sad.
I'd like to donate some of my time to show Tim Apple some old Steve keynotes.

Ah, that makes sense. It's quite a good way of doing things, the charity benefits in volunteer time and money for them being there. Time is money and money is money for them.

I wonder if they had a choice... ever worked somewhere when The United Way Campaign hits? If this is true then it is another comment on how over paid tech is, the workers are simply labor without muscle.
