Long overdue. Hope this rethink expands across the board. Bought some Belkin AirTag holders and was appalled by the amount of packaging waste.
Honestly I don't care either way.Was the primary motivation behind these changes really sustainability, or was it cost savings?
well coz apple do this for their own gain (whether monetary or reputation/branding) first . I don't get why ppl defend for them or praise them I am sure they can see through the corporate BS, and its great they are doing it but no need to fall in love/praise or be amazedSomeone will still complain.
That’s actually exactly why iPads are USB-C. Connecting peripherals and the way they’re charged and handled. iPads are used more like PCs than phones. I’m not against USB-C for iPhone but we’re all staring at a MagSafe charging future for iPhone, and quite frankly, it will be better than lining up cable pins to a port.puts USB-c on the new iPad Mini for its transfer speed as the iPad Pro. Have USB c charger on the Apple Watch, have exclusively used USB-C on every Macbook for the last 5 years released.
Just removing the plastic wrap will not increase more space for shipping more units. Less materials, yes, and it can save cost though.Cost, probably. Less/smaller packaging = less materials + ship more units at the same time = lower costs.
Agreed. Some will treat this as zero sum. It could be to reduce waste AND cost.Just removing the plastic wrap will not increase more space for shipping more units. Less materials, yes, and it can save cost though.
I’ve never seen this acronym before. I love it and will use it from here on.A good move, that plastic is a PITA.
Likewise. This change will result in negligible savings of money or trash but will cause more damage to the boxes when shipping. It's always been nice to be able to resell the phone with a new looking box and accessories that were unused. Or.....is it possible the phones will arrive in a large, oversized cardboard box which is a LOT more wasteful than a little clear plastic film. So much virtue signaling...........I always tried to leave the plastic on the box to protect it. Also seems like the sticker would be easier to tamper with and make it look like it hasn't been opened when it actually has been. Not too thrilled about this change but it's not something worth caring about either. Sadly most people are wasteful and do just throw out the plastic to end up in the landfill.
Apple wasted 53 minutes of everyones time.
What about ethical cobalt sourcing for batteries? This isn't just an Apple issue, but most phone battery cobalt is sourced from... less ethical areas like the Congo where they use child labour. I think it would be a pretty big win and good PR if they were able to clarify their cobalt usage is coming from industrial operations that don't rely on 'artisanal' mining.
More forest burnt for soy yeahhhh
You are 100% wrong. It is way cheaper to use tried and true plastic than it is to research a viable alternative. I know it looks like just a sticker, but I guarantee tons of research went into picking that design, material, adhesive, and ink. If it were easy and cheaper than plastic they would have done it a decade ago100% cost. For the same reason apple removed the charging brick of the iPhone models. But still have a brick with every iPad model for some reason. For the same reason apple doesn’t offer an exchange program to take care of our old 5w chargers instead of people throwing them in the trash etc etc.
iPhones boxes are generally tightly packed in cardboard boxes. It won't rip during shipping. This is a neat idea, but I can't help but think that bit of paper with the green arrow can rip during transportation/distribution.
If you haven't seen it, Planet of the Humans is worth checking out. Everyone should watch at least this part.I Wish Apple would do more than this token gesture which is more done due to Tim Cooks profit mad penny pinching, for example the smaller more 'eco friendly' packaging is designed so Apple can fit more iphones on a pallet hence more apple products can be crammed onto a TEU container when shipped from mainland china, judging by container shipping prices exploding due to the pandemic Apple want to minimize this cost in any way possible...
I am more worried about the child labor and high environmental impact of mining lithium and Colbert in Liberia or the Congo needed to produce batteries.
What about mainland chinas building spree of 1000s of cheap 'dirty' coal powered plants without sulfur dioxide removing scrubbers that power the foxconn factories making apple products? I forgot china does not need to meet strict western emission reduction standards because they are classed as a developing economy(!) y'know china is held to the same standard as South Sudan when it comes to climate change.
TLDR
I am really sick of Apples token virtue signalling green washing when they could do more to tackle climate change. I guess it takes 'courage' to remove 1 gram of plastic on a $2000 iphone when china produces more pollution than Europe and North America combined!
Just think of how many children would be out of a job to feed their families if we don't buy from them. What about ethical cobalt sourcing for batteries? This isn't just an Apple issue, but most phone battery cobalt is sourced from... less ethical areas like the Congo where they use child labour.
