iRadio. iRollercoaster. iEverything... except no new computers. No new software. No support for Flash. Well done, Apple.

Sony has been notoriously awful in regard to how they have treated their contracted artists. Prince changed his name to a symbol in order to get out of his contract(s) with Sony. Sony owned Prince, but not the "Symbol". Same with Mariah Carey. Recall her "meltdown" years ago? It wasn't a melt down. She was contracted with Sony, and in the footsteps of Prince and many others, found a loophole. After her "breakdown", Sony bought out the rest of her contract, then she immediately signed with Virgin Records. In the course of one year, she made over $70 million (maybe more).

My friend André used to work for Sony's music division in NYC, the things he would tell me. I have no respect for them and my last Sony electronic purchase was the Trinitron 27" television. That was in 1999. I couldn't care less on this matter, if Sony doesn't meet Apple halfway, their arrogance will become a self-filling prophecy of demise.

It was Warner Bros. not Sony.

In 1993, Prince was fed up with his label, Warner Bros. They wanted him to release fewer CDs so he wouldn't flood the market and they could better promote him. He couldn't get out of his contract, but he could change his name to an unpronounceable symbol, largely to mess with them. Journalists started to call him "the artist formerly known as Prince," but in 2000 he went back to Prince when his Warner contract expired.

As for Mariah Carey, her "meltdown" happened after she left Columbia Records and signed with Virgin. In fact, her meltdown was the reason Virgin bought out her contract (that she had just signed the previous year).

Skip songs limit? Its 2013. The tweens wont approve of this. Get with the times apple. Choice is a good thing. Give uf a spotify model, that plus itunes match and the itunes content would beat everything else out there.

I doubt the average person would go for it then. It would have to offer something better than what is offered to justify an added bill.

Then again, I now pay ~$96 a year for Netflix, whereas before I didn't even have cable or a TV, and payed less than that on DVDs/iTunes TV shows each year so maybe not...

I see your point; I spend about the same on Netflix, and I think it's worth it because of the convenience for tv shows and movies I'm curious about. On the music side however, I've built up such a large library before spotify, pandora, etc. that I don't get much from such services. Plus, I'm an album person, so the radio type format doesn't fit for me. Ever since I got an iPod years ago, I don't think I've put the radio on for music unless it was absolutely necessary; plus, with radio services, I've noticed a general trend (even on pandora) to play the same group of songs for even your tailored stations, which gets tiring after a while.

Oh don't be silly.
The new computers aren't going to arrive until Haswell in June or July.
The new software won't be announced until WWDC.

This is all just common sense.

Here's my idea on how to make this work!!
If you listen to the full song then Sony gets the full agreed upon amount.

If you listen to less than 10% of the song and skip then Sony gets nothing as that is a legitimate skip.

If you listen to the song more than 10% but less than 50% then Sony would get half the amount since it could still be a skip or a listen. Some people like certain parts of the song. (Ex. First verse)

More than 50% of the song it's a full listen.

There, that seems fair to both parties and customers also win with unlimited skips which is what I think Apple wants to set itself apart from Pandora.

this is serious business about skipping eh?

I wonder how the pandora skip hack works (I bet the riaa loves it, or does Pandora pay for all of the skips?)
it's nearly perfect on iOS

So they don't think you should be allowed to dislike music? WTF.

No, just the music of the artists they represent. We're free to dislike the music of their competitors or any artist going at it Indie style. :D

In all serious considering how much people gloat over their music library sizes here I don't know why any of you would need a streaming service to keep yourselves in music.

I wouldn't call Sony greedy for trying to get the most out of negotiations, just like I wouldn't call Apple greedy for originally trying to pay a lower fee than other services do to the record labels. It's just how business negotiations are done.

In terms of the actual service, I personally have been unhappy with itunes match and hope this is better. As I've said before, I've found that censored versions of songs play quite frequently, with no way to manually override that I've seen. I also prefer more of a spotify type service. With spotify premium the quality is also very good at 320 kbps, and I have actually noticed an improvement over the songs I've purchased in itunes.

0 People using it means 0 skips. Does it matter Sony?

Yes, because people using services from other companies might start using Apple's, and places where Sony will get paid for skips will have less traffic, thus eating into its revenues.

i've been thinking if it makes more sense to have a subscription based music service vs a music discovery service like apple. obviously from apple's perspective, it's much better to have the free music discovery radio service and allow people to just buy music off them at full 0.99 price than use itunes match to allow you to move it "into the cloud"

personally, the only reason i'm interested in iRadio is because Apple's music selection is still superior. I'm also extremely interested in music discovery, i think that's been severely lacking in most services. the problem with google or amazon/spotify is that years of music listening and mp3s don't mix well with those services. with apple, i got to believe it'll read my itunes library and have a great understanding right off the bat.

if the rumored iRadio is as flexible as it seems to be (unlimited replays and skips) than realistically, offering it as a free service will probably satisfy most of the people out there.

It may just be a case of an 11th hour strategy from Sony to see if they can get any extra concessions before signing up.

Question

Will iRadio allow me to listen to what I want and offline? I'm not familiar with Pandora as it's not available in the UK.

if the rumors are true, you can't because apple wants you to buy music from iTunes if you like what you hear on iRadio.

It's hilarious that the company who overcharges for everything is being so cheap. Open the wallet, Apple. Not like it matters, Spotify, Google, and Microsoft already have infinitely superior music services than this. Late to the party, and deficient. Bad combo.

except this is not a competitor to spotify/google/microsoft.

No, it is Apple that thinks they should get to use Sony's property for free.

They want to get paid for the songs people don't listen to? Of all the money grubbing, piece of greedy crap moves, this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. Launch without them. I can see how the other music labels are getting pissed, its like being able to listen to the radio and just click to buy what you are listening to. Thats worth a billion times what Pandora and Spotify do. Sony is showing us once again how pathetic they have become.

Being able to skip songs is a feature like being able to skip commercials with a DVR or block ads in web pages. Why should Apple get this awesome feature in their service for free.

.....The music and movie labels are the most annoying companies in America when it comes to the entertainment industry.

Sure enough. Let's face it, they had a stranglehold for far too long, and aren't just gonne roll over, and give that up willingly. Did I mention greedy? It will take time for them to see the light, and embrace the new reality. They'll be better off, once they do, and so will we.

Their unbridled greed has contributed greatly to the creation of piracy in the first place. The artists themselves get a fraction of what they deserve.
