I dealt with Globalstar 25 years ago when it was first launching its satellite communications network. They at least have a more sustainable approach: Starlink satellites are designed to degrade quickly, which means they're not only contributing to the number of near Earth satellites in orbit (Kessler Effect), but also space trash that ultimately has no capability of being recovered/recycled. And, as we learned in Ukraine, Musk himself can turn Starlink on/off at a whim.
Well, of course SpaceX has the capability to turn their satellites on or off.

Interesting... I have a 15 Pro Max... and TMOB the SpaceX/TMOB service was just seamless. No need to hold your phone in a certain direction or do anything at all.. Apples service wanted me to stand on one leg, Wiggle my nose and sing i'm a little teapot... And it still never worked.

Satellite-based D2D will never be the primary way phones connect unless you are never inside, under a metal roof, in an office building, etc.

It can be an option, but it will never be the only option.

I don't.

I don't trust Apple, but I would trust Kim Jong Un over an Elon Musk company.
My guess is you would trust Kim over any company.

Nonsense.

And pure hyperbole.

Where in @WarmWinterHat's post was this stated?
Naa. Musk's companies are at the bottom of the list.
Exactly.

This is because one actually decides to rank companies (something that is a matter of consumer choice, according to the tenets of capitalism) and thereby chooses which of them to patronise (or buy from) according to various criteria.
It's also hyperbole.
Agreed.

I think Apple are going to learn "the hard way" what it's like dealing with a Musk controlled entity.

Well, I guess the same can be said the other way around...

Anyway, Starlink has been adopted by various airline and ship companies proving that it's doable. Besides, on planes/ships you don't have other options.

It's funny all you haters on Starlink, even though Starlink is technologically superior to Globalstar. 🤦‍♂️

I don't hate Starlink as a concept, I just don't want to do business with a company owned by Elon Musk. You call it being a hater, I call it voting with my dollars like one is supposed to do in a capitalist market.

Additionally, you expect Elon to give iPhones access to this for free, like Apple has with their SOS and messaging service?

Not allowing people in dire situations (such as health issues in remote locations with no cell service) to get emergency help sounds exactly like Musk.

Nothing is better than controlling global communication. Let's hope additional resources start getting put in place.

I don't trust either one of them

None of these companies are our "friends"

Companies are not our "friends"

AST Spacemobile, partnering with Verizon, AT&T, and Firstnet (along Vodafone, Google, and 50 other MNOs worldwide) can’t come fast enough. Text, Voice, and Usable Data from satellite over MNO/Ligado spectrum will be crucial to the D2D scene.
AST has already demonstrated capability far beyond anything Starlink (or Apple / Globalstar) is taking about. Supposedly they start launching their full production system in a month or two.

Sounds like Musk is scared of competition. Especially since Apple has deeper pockets. I hope Musk doesn't get his way especially with his connections right now in D.C. Don't forget competition is always better for the consumer.

Not haters.

Rather, this is making a clear choice, and expressing a (marked) preference for one company, or product, over another, which is something that - along with competition between companies and products - I believe is supposed to be encouraged for consumers under capitalism.

Even if this company were nothing to do with Elmo, the number of satellites they've shoved into the atmosphere has adversely affected astronomers' view of the night sky. It is starting to degrade our observations of space. I'm a big fan of astronomy, and seeing a line of Starlink sats instead of a nebula is really, really annoying.

Who gave Elmo the right to fill the sky with his junk?

Don't worry, Tim will botch this too, and the board will still have their blinders on and their fingers in their ear holes.

This is both wrong.
Starlink satellites are operating in a very low orbit. Even when they fail completely they will burn up in the atmosphere after three years.
Also Starlink was never turned off in Ukraine. This fake news emerged during Ukrainian advances. Starlink was never enabled in Russian territory, it was even disallowed by sanctions. This lead troops in Kursk and drone operators into thinking that Starlink was turned off but it was never enabled in these areas.

I don’t care, just blanket the earth with coverage so I dont have to pay ridiculous roaming charges when I am on a cruise ship or in another country.
I'm sure they'll still charge you for roaming anyway. One of the providers in my country offers Wi-Fi calling, but if you use it overseas then they still bill you roaming charges even though it doesn't even touch the roaming network.
