Why did he call it "WiFi Mobile Device" instead of iPod?

Silly little monkey! People want iPods not "WiFi Mobile Devices," if you try to rebrand it like that you'll kill it.

Cause your the silly monkey....or at least naive. He is positioning the ipod touch as a wifi mobile device for the future. Because that is where the future is going. So he is making sure that is where is product line is migrating. Read up on the market trends man.

I was waiting for a 32gGB touch. However, I was hoping they keep the price and simply double the capacity. Now, i might have to wait for a 64 GB model, to get 32GB at a reasonable price

You know... I think my 4Gb iPhone will become a collectable... It's so unique.

I keep telling myself that since it's so tiny.

We all knew storage bumps were coming before an actual revision to the device. They have always done that & always will. It's just a typical, mid-cycle storage bump that ensures a bit more revenue before they break out a full fledged v2 - which will = even more revenue.
It's business.
Trickle.

iPhone v2 end of summer = 3G, 32 GB (if they haven't already bumped storage again, by then), slight tweak on the physical device (I am predicting bye bye chrome ring, hello touch-like bevel) with additional tweaks to the OS (in the form of more out-of-the-box apps).

Side note: it is interesting the iPhone went 16 GB whilst the touch went 32 GB. Then again, see my "trickle" comment.

Just because it looks the same...

Personally, I wonder if Apple might not have pulled a fast one on us and included a 3G chip in the new 16GB iPhone, but it's still deactivated since it hasn't gone through the FCC yet. Here's hoping that engadget will take one apart and let us know.

And a very happy (unbroken) iPhone 8GB owner. This thing rocks, best phone ever for me. The SDK will make this thing fly, just watch the explosion of cool Widgets and Automator actions and what not on Apple's site, it's "insane" how fast the talented developers come out with cool apps. You'll have a few hundred games, applications, remote-control this-that-and-then-some apps etc. pp. at the end of the year. Or sooner. :) :apple: rocks

Consider someone (lets call him Dan) who is locked into a Vodafone UK contract but wants and iPhone. Or maybe someone who doesn't want o2 (or AtandT) sucky tarriffs.

I unlocked and the only thing I regret is the divide it has caused and the rift in the international brotherhood of apple love. Oh, wait- who cares. Let people play with their own toys how they please. You're only jealous because I can play with my Balls on the train!

(BTW, for those unfamiliar with the the unofficial 3rd party apps, Balls is a game a bit like connect4 except its friggin unbeatable!)

Damn!

I was hoping they'd have dropped the 8 GB from the Touch. I may have to replace my 5.5G 30 GB, and I'm leery about getting an 8GB Touch, because it wouldn't hold all my stuff for long. I can't afford the higher-capacity models...

Quite a conundrum.

I just picked up a 16GB touch about a month ago. Boourns. I would have dropped the extra $100 on the 32.

This was the first thing I read when I woke up this morning. I'm glad to see they haven't just put the 16 in the 8GB's spot and price, and added the 32 at the 16's spot and price. In this way, I am content.

16GB iPhone though... that's pretty sweet. But, being in Canada, I'd have to jailbreak it, which apparently has proven to be a royal pain with the new 1.1.3 firmware that ships with the new phones.

Don't understand what's the point with wifi. Maybe it's for free in U.S.??
In Europe you have to pay as for normal mobile phones.

Yes I know all that, but if you try to make it explicit to consumers that you're selling them a "WiFi mobile device" their eyes will glaze over and they'll walk away. Far better to keep referring to it as an iPod and quietly add more and more features (which is what they have been doing until now).

Oops bought the Touch at Xmas did'nt think it would be so soon, oh well, $499 is abit more than I wanted to spend.

No doubt the future will be a true cross-over device as a recent analyst noted (see AppleInsider) a bit bigger than Touch with more connectivity running on the spanking new intel chips.

I read somewhere this week that the use of the iPhone has cut into the occasions when people take their laptop with them. I personally know this to be true in my experience.

I just bought an iPhone last Wednesday from an Apple Retail Store and activated it on Friday 1st February... can i return the 8GB iPhone and pay the difference for the 16GB model instead?

How about the contract with O2? will the my 18-month contract be extended another 18 months (36 months / 3 years!) ?
