At today's media event, Apple announced the next-generation 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display carrying a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, as expected from recent rumors. Featuring 14.7 million pixels, the new iMac offers improved improved contrast, viewing angles, and color accuracy.

Thirty years after the first Mac changed the world, the new iMac with Retina 5K display running OS X Yosemite is the most insanely great Mac we have ever made," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "With a breathtaking 14.7 million pixel display, faster CPU and graphics, Fusion Drive, and Thunderbolt 2, it's the most beautiful and powerful iMac ever.
The base iMac with a Retina 5K display will be available with a 3.5 GHz quad-core Intel i5 processor, AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB Fusion Drive starting at $2,499 with shipping beginning today. The new Retina iMac models can be upgraded with 4.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and AMD Radeon R9 M295X graphics processor. All Retina iMac models come standard with two Thunderbolt 2 ports.

The remainder of the iMac lineup has not been updated, with the 21-inch model still starting at $1,099 and the 27-inch iMac without a Retina 5K Display starting at $1,799.

Simply amazing, too bad it ships standard with mediocre specs with a high price. But 5K? God damn Apple.

Even the Mac Mini got some love. :D No denying, these guys are pioneers in innovation and engineering.

(Sadly the iMac keeps its chin though...)

5k display !!!! Even though its using i5, but apple is pushing 5k display to the masses!!

Apple has lost its way. Give it proper specs and price it for $2999 please.

The iMac retina is going to be amazing I'm sure, but only if you're into photo/video editing and similiar stuff. If you like to game regularly, then it's not so good. That begs the question, where is the updated regular iMac 27'' with the new Maxwell GPU?

Again

Once again, I see the issue of a system with a very high resolution display coupled with inadequate CPU/GPUs. :(

That said, 5K is insane.

As great as the new iMacs long overdue update was, the announcement was so extraordinarily ordinary. =/ Nothing unexpected.

You are kidding right? They are shipping it with the fastest intel i7 CPU and one of the the fastest mobile GPU's out there. I suppose you didn't see the CTO options.

The 4790K is available as a BTO......

But the crappy AMD GPU is disappointing. The 980M is a much better GPU to choose.....

iMacs always uses mobile gpu
someone has some performance gpu between these AMD and 780M ?

Yeah I wonder what the frame-rate is going to be for even fairly basic games?
I don't game much, nor do I photo and video edit. I would mainly buy this because it would (with pixel-doubling presumably) make text for reading/writing absolutely incredible, and that's what I do all day. For that, I guess a crappy GPU will be okay.
But I game occasionally, so for that, it's not exactly unexpected, this being Apple, but disappointing!
