Not possible until Thunderbolt 3. This was well known going into the event.

They may be able to do it with two TB2 together. Just release the display and an adapter that makes it connect to double TB2 on the Mac Pro.

Hopefully this is the final push it takes to burst the 4K+ pricing bubble. That Dell display is DoA if it costs more than this.

Really disappointing to not see a 5k Cinema Display. I guess they've effectively discontinued it, which leaves Mac Pro customers without an official Apple display to use.

Those chipsets just came out as well, there is no way they would be included as these products go through intensive testing months prior to launch, nothing should go wrong while running that 5K display.

And you think Apple wouldn't get samples of the 980M before public release? Apple has a history of getting early access of chips before other OEM's get them.

It would be great if Apple would make the screen reusable - like make the Mac mini slide into the back of the screen so that you don't have to rebuy the monitor each and every time.

Nice picture, then it will quietly fry itself like all the other iMacs.

Sad but true.

One of the last things they said.

11:14 am New high-end 4K display costs around $3000.

Not 5K, but at least they aren't discontinuing it yet.

Edit: Never mind, I'm wrong.

You can use the iMac as a display if you want. 4k displays have a similar price anyway.

Edit you can't use the 5k IMac as a display.

i like how this story is a little footnote on the sidebar when click bait non Apple stories are plastered on the front page day after day.

That was a reference by Phil to 3rd-party displays. They've announced no update to the Cinema Display.
I suspect they will release a standalone in the future but supply constraints on he new 5k monitors might currently mean all screens are destined for iMac for now
