Costs the same as a cheaply-made, lower-quality, creaky plastic 5k Dell display* with no speakers or camera... Oh, and you get a free computer with it!

* as I have learned first-hand :(

Friggin haters? 5K is what the price is for

Also, for all you GPU haters out there: the 290X is amazing! Everyone knows Apple won't shove the ABSOLUTE best gpu, so i was surprised. In a scaled, its rated about 6500! Granted, the 980 is about 9000, but still. Around 3000 is all thats needed for 30FPS games, etc.

Haters...

That was a reference by Phil to 3rd-party displays. They've announced no update to the Cinema Display.

Oh, nevermind then.

Come to think of it, that would have been pretty steep compared to the iMac...that should have been more obvious to me.

I was honestly shocked with the pricing of the Retina iMac, I thought it was going to break $3,000.

They dropped the price of the PCI-e based flash CTO options. It's now $800 for a 1TB flash drive versus $1000 previously.

I'm blown away by the price of the 5k iMac....that is much lower than I thought they would do it for...wow.

Looks like they removed the TB display from their 'Mac'-place on the site.. not good..

Yes, the assumption that Apple is going to make displays in the future is not a foregone conclusion...

Anyone saying that it's underpowered is a freaking teletubbie.

a 5k display in an industry where PCs in 4k isn't even standard yet, windows doesn't even handle scaling well and still with young crappy hardware at high cost.
way to kick their butt Apple.

mac mini

did mini ever had the quad core option? I see the $699 is with the dual core i5. And the option is a dual core i7 (for an extra $300). Not very cool.

WHERE IS THE TB DISPLAYS AT 5K????????????

To be fair you can buy the iMac and just use it as a display (in target display mode), and it will only cost you a tiny bit more than what Apple will probably price the 5K display at.

rename

They really need to rename this web site

"mac whiners " I never seen a more whining group of individuals that are on this forum.

If Apple came out with a new device that made you irresistible to the opposite sex, produced for you a never ending supply of cash and provided you with eternal health and happiness. Most of you would find something to complain about.

Must resist....My late 2008 24" iMac is still going strong, beautiful, and more than capable of running Yosemite.

So I am still very happy with my iMac :apple:

Sweet display with crappy mobile graphics cards. I bet if you try to run anything intensive on that thing it is going to lag like crazy.

I hope they just make a separate display to put on a real machine.

I've had that feeling too, but it doesn't make much sense to me. All they'd have to do is to stuff the iMac 5k display into a new shell. What do they expect Mac Pro users to use? Wouldn't Pixar and their ilk benefit from those nice new 5k displays? I certainly would.
