Question: in practical terms, assuming I do not spend more than 2% of my time playing games, is getting the higher quality GPU worth it in a machine like this? I guess what I'm looking for is if there'd be a tangible difference in everyday computing with some photo processing tossed in? It's only $250 on top, but considering I'm going to go for a 512GB SSD option, every little saving helps. :)

Interested but not interested enough to go through selling my old 27inch. I do need to get a higher res second display though.

5K monitor with 8 bit color at 60fps is about 6.7 Gbps, so TB1 and TB2 should both provide enough bandwidth.

A 5K 60hz display @ 24bit color will take about 28Gbps according to John Siracusa. That's Displayport 1.3 (TB3) territory, which won't be out until next year. So no, you couldn't use this iMac as a display with the TB2 port.

They typically post it on the iOS blog while the Apple event is up, and then move it to the main page when the Apple event is over. Kind of annoying, but hey we don't run MR.

Yeah, it is because they want to keep the ölive event article front and center until after the event. Pretty logical, and I agree with it personally. Not really a fair criticism since they always move these stories to front page news within an hour of the event being over.

Anyone know if I can use the 5K iMac as a display for my PS4 and Wii U?

If so, how do I go about setting that up?

Nice, but no buy

iMac Retina is nice. But I would never buy it(2 PC & 1 Mac Pro 2010 on 1 display). It puts pressure on Dell and other manufactures to lower the price of HiDPI displays. A 30" 16:10 5120x3200 or better 7680x4800 display with 3 or more DP 1.3 inputs would be my dream.:D

I'm aware of why they do it. Just post the articles after the event is up, no biggie.

My 06 fried in a year and a half. Not saying that's the norm, but it certainly happens. I built a $1000 hackintosh 2 years ago and it will still run circles around what they just released today.

They want you to buy a 27 inch iMac and use it as a 5K display for the Mac Pro.

I doubt this is possible.
But it is strange to see how they are killing off the Mac pro from their product line. It was released just last year, and it clearly seems like they moved on. Even if you go to the Apple store, you barely see the Mac Pros. And it's plugged to an old TB display...
Apple wants people to buy one iwatch, one iphone, one ipad, one macbook, and one iMac.

The one it comes with standard is already pretty slick. Unless you're a hardcore gamer, or want to nail the hell out of some GPGPU tasks, I'd say save your money, and go for the entry price.

Did all the people complaining about the lack of graphic horsepower to drive this thing miss the part about the screen being more efficient and easier to drive? Custom screen controller, more efficient pixels, uses something like 30% less power. They didn't exactly take a 50 inch HD and put it in a vise. They developed a new monitor.
