I think Apple is out of the standalone display business, if you listen carefully to what he was saying, half the time he referred to it as an iMac and half the time as a display, then he said 'and we're even throwing in a computer inside' - that suggests to me that they are ditching standalone displays. It's no huge loss because you could always buy an entry level 27 inch 5K iMac or one of the many LG displays, plus they know that there are going to be huge choice in 4K displays by this time next year. I think the Thunderbolt display is a discontinued product.

So I was wrong. I didn't think Apple would leapfrog 4K and go to 5K for under $3,000. That said, $2,499 is still a lot of dough for a computer...sporting an $800 premium over the base configuration 27-inch iMac. It's also just a display update in the same case design.

I will sit back and wait for that price to drop to $1,999 in a year or so while allowing the hardware to catch up with the display. Regardless, nice to see Apple staying at the forefront of display technology and pushing the iMac line to new heights.:apple::)

Well holy jeez. I was all set to buy a MacBook Air when my current iMac kicks the bucket but this has made things a bit more complicated.

So you telling me my recently bought $2999 Mac Pro machine with Thunderbolt 2 will NOT support a possible 5k Thunderbolt Display when it comes out because it has only Thunderbolt 2?
Crazy.

Must resist....My late 2008 24" iMac is still going strong, beautiful, and more than capable of running Yosemite.

So I am still very happy with my iMac :apple:

Me too. Mine's a year older but I had it made fully loaded. And it too, is Yosemite-capable.

My only concern is have they upped the computer's ability enough to keep up with this display over the long haul. Will I still be able to run the latest OS 7-8 years from now. This is a concern, as I will also fully load my next iMac and that's over $4,200CAD. It's a lot to spend if it can't. I might wait another gen. I thing a gen or two will make the price even more reasonable. Remember how much more the rMBPs were compared to the regular MBPs at first? Though the gap between the fully loaded iMac and fully loaded riMac is only $400CAD.

They want you to buy a 27 inch iMac and use it as a 5K display for the Mac Pro.

I really dont get it. Why would they release a 5k iMac when the Mac Pro doesn't have a proper display to work with. SO the best device to do photography, graphic design or video editing is the new iMac? what about the Mac Pro???

iMacs always uses mobile gpu
someone has some performance gpu between these AMD and 780M ?

The base M290X is slightly below 780M, I can't find any benchmarks on M295X

Yeah I wonder what the frame-rate is going to be for even fairly basic games?

Essentially the same as the non-retina high-end iMac. I hope you do not have any ambitions to run games at the native resolution, that would be plain silly. Unless its really old games...

Wow, I must the *the* lucky one who is still using a 2011 i7 iMac, unfried

No kidding. I don't get that comment. My 2010 iMac is still going strong, no complaints at all. In fact, this 5K screen was pretty much the only thing that would have made me upgrade.

Friggin haters? 5K is what the price is for

Also, for all you GPU haters out there: the 290X is amazing! Everyone knows Apple won't shove the ABSOLUTE best gpu, so i was surprised. In a scaled, its rated about 6500! Granted, the 980 is about 9000, but still. Around 3000 is all thats needed for 30FPS games, etc.

Haters...

Hoorrrrraaayyyyy 30fps in my new computer.

But most of their Macs can't drive a 5K display. What I wanted more than any iDevice was a 23/24" 4K Thunderbolt display to use with my 15" rMBP..... :(

To be fair you can buy the iMac and just use it as a display (in target display mode), and it will only cost you a tiny bit more than what Apple will probably price the 5K display at.

And how is that supposed to work via TB2?!

I would wait for reviews. The first generation retina devices often have under power issues. The iPhone 4, iPad 3, and somewhat the 2012 rMBP.
