I just built a hexa-core i7-5820k, 16gb of ddr4 ram, and gtx 980 computer with a 2k (1440p) display for about 2,000 after taxes.

So Apple is charging a ~1500 premium for a 2k->5k display upgrade.

Say what? Dell's forthcoming 5k display is suspected to cost $2500. For just a display. That display with your i7 pc would cost $4500.

Any guesses when Apple will obsolete current MP without getting too much rage from current MP users? 18 months after the launch? 16 months after buyers really got their product? 24 months? TB3 announced in WWDC 2015?

The new chips from Intel will probably be available for a 2nd gen Mac Pro in early 2015. Then there's the question about new AMD GPUs.

Apple has lost its way. Give it proper specs and price it for $2999 please.

Pricing is in line with the market. Buy a computer with "proper specs" and then add a 27" 5K display. You'd have to sell your car for that.

Thunderbolt 1&2 can technically do the throughput. One problem is your GPU can't do the resolution. The max output of the 750M (your graphics GPU chip)...

The original post was about the Mac Pro, which has dual D300, D500 or D700 graphics cards.

These can drive three 4k monitors, so they ought to be able to drive at least one 5K.

B) A BTO retina iMac with quad-core i7(~4790k?), 16gb of ddr3 ram and 4gb video ram costs 3200 [3500 after taxes]

Don't lie online. A i7-5820k system with 16GB DDR4, GTX 780Ti is going to set you back $2900+ before you even buy a monitor.

With a GTX 980 even more. With a 4K IPS (not LCD) monitor another $1000 on top.

The Apple Retina is 5K IPS - For $2500 base spec this is simply amazing.

Yes this is not as good compared to a $4000 PC system of the above spec but then that is a stupid comparison anyway. Compare Apples to Apples (or PC's of the same worth).

Seven pages and nobody has mentioned that Apple said this is a TFT display? I've been kind of out of the loop for the past year or two on display technology, but isn't TFT bad and in-plane switching (IPS) good? I thought TFT had terrible viewing angles and color reproduction.
What you mean is TN (Twisted Nematic). Those are infamous for their inferior image quality compared to IPS. TFT (Thin Film Transistor) is more a general category for flat screen monitors.

Yeah, but unfortunately TB2 doesn't have the bandwidth to drive a 5k monitor @ 60hz. TB3 can, which is why we'll probably see a Mac Pro update with TB3 next year, along with a 5k Cinema Display with TB3. But that probably means early adopter Mac Pro customers are SOL for 5k unless some third-party vendor rigs up a dual TB2 converter.

They really need to rename this web site

"mac whiners " I never seen a more whining group of individuals that are on this forum.

If Apple came out with a new device that made you irresistible to the opposite sex, produced for you a never ending supply of cash and provided you with eternal health and happiness. Most of you would find something to complain about.

You sure have a point, but maybe some of us don't want to be irresistible to the opposite sex

I find funny people complaining about the specs of this computer, specially it is not suited for gaming.
If anyone knows about FPS games besides stupid battlefied noob run and gun. There is game called Arma 2 and Arma 3. I have an older Imac mid 2011 with and upgraded second ssd 6g in it and it runs that game pretty nice. Medium quality graphics. That iMac was not the top model. If you add that I live in Panamá, central America and my ping is around 80. I am pretty happy to kick the butt and guts of a lot of people running custom gaming pc's worth 3 or 4k.

So this new iMac with this ridiculous display paired with the R9 M290x or the 295x will kick ass big time.
I play everyday, play in PVP leagues etc. So it will be a nice upgrade. Can't wait the 20 days it will take to arrive here. Just ordered it 20 minutes ago with the R9 295x and 1TB flash. Muahaha

Dell is charging a high premium for their display because it's new and 5k; realistically it only costs marginally more than 4k displays to make.

And I'm still paying retail markup; Apple is buying parts for far cheaper than me.

Agreed tho, if I went with a 4k IPS display then my build would cost an extra 1000 dollars

*IPS is LCD, I think you mean TN.

Umm, you're forgetting about OS X vs Windows, all-in-one aluminum enclosure, built in speakers and camera, bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, etc. Matching spec for spec does not tell the whole story. Your cheaper hexa-core computer will look something like this...yuck...
I put it inside a Power Mac G5 case.

5K? DAMN! Seriously, how many 4K's are even in homes yet to even go a step higher and talk about bandwidth when watching a Movies or TV Shows in 5K. I do not mind new technology and improvements but they are jumping too fast, not one cable TV Network even broadcast in 1080p only in 480i, 720p and 1080i still.

This is a computer display, not a TV.
