They're a shocking brands, absolutely laughable sound signature. No music lover, let alone audiophile, would buy Bose in their right mind. Of course they're cheap.
Why is their sound laughable. And specifically how is the sound not as good as competitors’ like Apple’s?

Half a grand. That’s insane for a company that doesn’t specialize in audio products. If it was a $500+ Bang & olufsen or Bose product, maybe. But Apple makes computers and phones.

They’ve had the largest music distribution service for the last 20 years, they’ve also been supplying headphones to their products for 18 years. They’ve also been building miniature speakers for iphones and iPads since 2007.

What are you missing here?

They're cheaper than the MontBlanc MB01.

But they're not available in México yet. Not even to preorder, I mean.
Yes, they are:

Also the Montblanc’s at Liverpool:

Folks here obviously aren’t familiar with the headphone marketplace. These aren’t out of line with other audiophile lineups. Whether or not they can keep pace in their price range is the question that needs to be answered.
Trouble is that the audiophile market is very small compared with the mass market. That is why Homepod (and Google Home Max) speakers were duds compared with other smart speakers - yes they had better sound but not enough people willing to pay the substantial premium for the improved sound quality. This may be a similar situation.

Funny if I order one engraved it's 2-3 weeks, expedited is December 31. But at almost $800 Canadian, man, there are so many nice headphones at that price.

Apple today introduced new wireless over-ear headphones called AirPods Max, with key features including high-fidelity audio, Adaptive EQ, Active Noise Cancellation, and spatial audio. Priced at $549, the headphones can be ordered starting today on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app, with availability beginning December 15.

AirPods Max come in five colors, including space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink. Apple says the headphones feature a "breathable knit mesh" spanning the stainless steel headband that distributes weight to reduce on-head pressure.

Apple says the ear cups have acoustically engineered memory foam to create an effective seal, and the telescoping headband arms smoothly extend and then stay in place to maintain the desired fit on your head.

AirPods Max feature a 40-mm Apple-designed dynamic driver that is said to provide "rich, deep bass, accurate mid-ranges, and crisp, clean high-frequency extension." Each ear cup is equipped with Apple's H1 chip for "computational audio" to deliver the "highest quality listening experience possible," according to Apple.

Similar to the Apple Watch, AirPods Max feature a Digital Crown on one ear cup for precise volume control and the ability to play or pause audio, skip tracks, answer or end phone calls, and activate Siri voice control. There's also a noise control button for switching between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode, which lets some outside sound in so you can interact naturally with your surroundings.

AirPods Max feature up to 20 hours of battery life with Active Noise Cancellation and spatial audio enabled — fine print reveals that Apple had volume set to 50% during its testing. Apple says a five-minute charge delivers 1.5 hours of listening time.

As with other AirPods models, AirPods Max have one-tap setup and automatic pairing with all the devices signed in to a user's iCloud account, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. AirPods Max have built-in optical and position sensors that automatically detect when the headphones are on someone's head. Once in place, AirPods Max play audio and can pause once removed, or when the user lifts one ear cup.

Apple's announcement provides more details on audio features:For phone calls and Siri commands, beam-forming microphones help to block out ambient noise and focus on the user's voice.

AirPods Max come with a carrying case called the "Smart Case" and a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box. Apple says the Smart Case puts the AirPods Max in an ultra-low power state that helps to preserve battery charge when not in use.

AirPods Max are launching in the United States and more than 25 other countries and regions, with shipments set to begin arriving to customers on Tuesday, December 15. AirPods Max can be ordered on Apple.com starting today.

I could justify every penny of $549 IF the Airpods Max had just ONE killer feature...just one must have feature that no other headphones have. If they had ear detection so it could detect which ear is which meaning no right or wrong way to put the headphones on - I would spring for it because it actually solves a problem. The AirPods Max at $549 needs one killer feature...

A lot of Apple products seem overpriced but this one definitely takes the cake for me. Wow.
Really? More than the monitor stand? If this thing sounds as good as Apple says, the price is actually in the ballpark of other high end headphones, and far less than other top tier headphones which can go for over twice as much.

Intel has been making processors for around 50 years and within ten years Apple has come long to not only match them but even smoke them. Ten years ago the guys over at Intel laughed at Apple and said Apple didn't have any deep experience making processors. I bet they're not laughing now. Apple has shown time and again, that maniacal focus on learning and desire to make great products trumps experience. They've handily beaten many very experienced competitors across different fields.
You have a point with what you are saying, so you are right. Anyway, just time will tell, I mean, us the consumers will vote with our ears and our wallets.

Fair enough. They will sell well but those who buy them won't appreciate that there are better options. It's outrageous that these lack LDAC or some other lossless codec for the price. For 300 I could forgive them but for 550 I want LDAC or something comparable. Most buyers won't care I suppose. I think that's what bugs me the most about Apple.

The iPhone wasn’t so much a better smartphone as it was a pocket computer.

The Apple Watch is a miniature wrist computer.

Even the HomePod is a computer.

What I am suspecting is that the AirPods max are really two HomePods for your ears. That’s what the critics are failing to realise. You are not buying a pair of headphones. You are buying a computer that produces sound.

It’s not even going to be close.

I'm not sure what your point is. The Homepod is just a speaker to me. I own two of them. They are nice enough but certainly not life changing technology. The were never worth the 350 initial pricetag. I fail to see how a computer that produces sound is something the world needs as opposed to just excellent headphones.

Well, seeing as we have absolutely no reviews, no tests, and no comments on how good the quality actually is, you have no idea how good the quality of the AirPods max are compared to the Sony‘s that you were advertising.

with apples track record with AirPods there is no way that these max earphones will trump anything that Bose or sony studio headphones can produce

Agreed! That's generally the going price point for most quality headphones. $400-$600. $1500-$2000 for a pair of Grados.
Audiophiles aren't buying these.

I'm looking forward to the countless articles on MacRumors containing every possible thing you'd ever want to know and not want to know about the Airpods Max. The colors, the mixing of earpads, the cost of earpads, the shipping times, the shipping delays, the biased sound tests, the tests where they pit Airpods Max against other headphones that aren't near the same price point, and the constant bleating about how amazing Airpods Max are.

Audiophile/premium personal audio equipment tends to be rather expensive, I myself am using a $2000 headphones and there are many wireless (lossy) premium headphones in the $500 and above range (e.g Beyerdynamic Amiron Wireless) and I think that we need to be cognizant about the fact that Apple is targeting this segment and not the mass consumer segment that products like Sony XM4 and Bose targets.

Until we have more information and reviews on its sound quality, we can't make a judgment on whether is it overpriced as there are indeed plenty of wireless headphones in the $500 range with less features.

and why not? there are plenty of audiophile wireless headphones out there that uses lossy BT codecs as well.

Until we've heard its sound quality, there really is no way to say for certainty that audiophiles wouldn't like it, many audiophiles are rather objective and we don't let the brand image cloud our impression or judgment for it, if it sounds great then thats all that matters.

Wait ... compatible only with Apple products?

No wired mode using USB-C when the battery dies?

Are they not wired headphones though? Its a genuine question, but what I never came cross BT headphones > $400 price range regularly.

Show me Bluetooth audiophile headphones. As you said in the second part of your post, I do not think they will be that high quality over standard bluetooth
Ultimate Ears 18+ Pro or UE Live custom fit IEM. They both have a Bluetooth connector and I love them. Been a customer for nearly a decade.

Apple either missed their demand estimate at $549, or were unable to produce enough prior to launch. napkin estimate, they had north of 90,000 pre orders day one. They planned for a third of that. That’s going to drop off quick. And they’ll lose a few until those lead times shrink.

These will look great with my Apple Pro Display XDR. Oh wait that's right, I didn't get one because it's six thousand dollars. If you like these then more power to you but to me these look awful and probably sound good, but likely not better than any number of other ~$500 headphones.

This feels like the iPod HiFi all over again: a competent product, but one that no one was really asking for and is way overpriced.
