A shame that the AirTag’s anti theft potential cannot be fully used.

I really wonder how long it takes for the AirTag to send a warning when it is travelling with someone who isn’t its owner? Minutes? Hours?

I also think a majority of thieves would probably just dump whatever they have stolen as soon as they get a warning. There are plenty of good places to hide AirTags in cars such as the engine compartment (where any sound probably wouldn’t be heard anyway).

But he would have to have Bluetooth enabled right?

To be honest i really thought the Air Tags would be a GPS signal. I see now that it is an entirely different animal.
Every single new product thread is filled with people like this. People who create their own expectations, based off of zero information, that nobody but them expected. And then they proclaim their disappointment. If you thought that then you weren't paying attention. Every single rumor for the last year plus has said that it would work exactly the way Apple described today.

I wonder If I could leave an Airtag in my car and then just use it to find my way back to it. I'm assuming my iPhone or Find My will remember the last location the AirTag was seen. Or am I missing something?

Assume so. If you have CarPlay it already works this way. It remembers the last place you disconnected your phone from the car stereo and shows it on Apple Maps.

Looks like AirTag holders are already available so AliExpress. Much more reasonable prices too.

I want an opt out of the airtag network. I don't need all the airtags out there pinging my phone using up my battery just so they can report where they are.

then turn Bluetooth off; I suspect these work just like any other Bluetooth beacon that are used in shops, signs etc, there is no way to “opt out”.

I said to a friend earlier “How long before someone starts a class action suit against Apple over airtags, claiming airtags are draining their phones battery?”

Your cell need be within bluetooth range to work? Ok...so it will help you in your home find your keys. Otherwise it depends on someone else tapping on it to say they found it? Real World expectations...whatever item valuable enough to have this on it will depend on someone having an iPhone and being honest to work. Unless I am not seeing something, this exact same result could be achieved by simply putting your name and number on an item or on a piece of paper in a wallet or something like that. An honest person, with any phone, would then call you. Otherwise...I dont see the draw for it. It isnt like a low jack that will tell you where something that was stolen is...i.e. a backpack from GCS...once it is out of Bluetooth range, well, too bad. Again, unless I am missing something. Limited use might explain low price too.
An example : my son left his iPhone 6 somewhere at school a while back. It was then taken (of course) and so disappeared. Later that evening or showed up on my Find My, and he went to get it the next morning. The thief had not been able to unlock it so had thrown it into a hedge near the school. My phone located it to within a metre or two while I was still at home.

The range works because the moment someone with an iPhone happened to pass near the hedge the signal came to me showing where it was.

This is how you'd be able to find missing /stolen items with airtags on them.

It will be interesting to know the details about the Anti-tracking features. I'm guessing the mention of "over time" suggests a reasonable delay, so it would work for one hidden in a car. If my car were stolen I'd be looking for it within a few hours I hope.

Ummm iPhones do that already, as they can tell that you stopped travelling quickly and then started walking. Doesn't your "parked car" location already show up on your phone?

AirTags ping your iPhone using the exact same radio channels that your Apple Watch and AirPods use. Likely same battery use as well. Opt out, and you can't connect to your own Watch or wireless headset, etc.

All this excitement over a gps tag that has been offered in the power tool and construction world for 5 years at the same price....
A GPS tag only works outdoors (many construction sites, etc.), and/or near windows where they can pick up 3 or more satellites. This tag will work indoors with zero satellite reception (basement workshop, underground garage, subway station, inside cruise ship cabin, etc.) as long as you or anybody with a recent iPhone might walk nearby.

Hope this hasn't been discussed before ... is there a way to set up an alert that warns you if your phone loses contact with a tag? I sometimes forget a jacket or bag under the table when I walk away. I think one of the competitor products had such a function.

Could be useful for luggage that ends up on a different plane than the one you are a passenger on, but then I’d be worried Apple Maps will give the wrong directions. Apple Maps seems to be USA centric, my bag would probably show it is in Albany USA instead of Albany Western Australia 😣

I wonder if it will alert you when battery is getting low. Nothing more frustrating than my wife saying she lost her keys, I go pull up Tile app and it says last know location was two months ago -- because the battery died.

Also, I want airtag or something like it built into my glasses frame. That's what I'm always misplacing more than anything....
Every iPhone comes with Reminder app. I use it to remind me to change my HRM battery yearly.

iPhone more than likely to have Bluetooth enabled. How else the owner use Apple Watch, AirPods or even AirDrop?
