Definitely bummed they don't have a way to just attach them to a keyring without an accessory. The Tile Pro has this already. But also, no mention of a rechargeable battery. Is this going to be disposable tech?
Somebody will make a super low profile holder thing. Give it like a week

Definite deal breaker if it doesn’t have a hole

Problem solved!

Umm.. no. Think before you posted. If someone bought this the object they attached to will be much more valuable.
Umm.. no. Think before you answer. The 'object' I referred to clearly doesn't include the tag/holder, otherwise how could I attach it to the object, as it would already be attached?

People who buys this will attach it to something worth much more than $300 but if you're saying it worth much more than the AirTags it attached to then you absolutely right. Sometimes grammar is confusing 😄

It says it’s a replaceable battery. Hopefully it’s one of those regular button batteries.

Hope this hasn't been discussed before ... is there a way to set up an alert that warns you if your phone loses contact with a tag? I sometimes forget a jacket or bag under the table when I walk away. I think one of the competitor products had such a function.

That is what I want to know, as that is what I use tile for.... fingers crossed but it doesn't seem like it so far :'(

These combined with drones are going to make for some very interesting gf/bf tracker stories.

Annnnnd here come the comments from the people who didn't read the product page nor watch the presentation.

From https://www.apple.com/airtag/
AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there.

Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, don’t worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner.

Wonder if I can deactivate the use of my iPhone for AirTags. Would like to be able to do that, just in protest... 80$ for an AirTag with holder, screw that. I don’t want my iPhone wasting time on that overpriced junk 😂

Price in Danish currency.
Maybe you should protest your country's taxes instead?

ok, I am lost. I might have read all the comments but it seems like everyone is missing 2 points:
1) why does apple expect us to turn it off, if we are being stalked? I can name at least 100 people who would receive these alerts and don't understand what is going on.
2) what if the person who is being stalked have hearing problems? they would not hear any beeps at all.

Apple today announced AirTag, a Tile-like Bluetooth tracking device that's designed to be attached to items like keys and wallets for tracking purposes, letting you find them right in the Find My app.

AirTags are accessories for attaching to backpacks, luggage, and other items. Any U1 device like the iPhone 12 can be used for precision finding to guide you right to the item you're looking for. Combining visual, haptic, and audio feedback, AirTags aim to make keeping track of your things simple.

Each AirTag is made of stainless steel and is IP67 water and dust resistant. The small, lightweight devices feature a built-in speaker that plays sounds to help locate them, and the cover is removable so users can easily replace the battery.

AirTags use a similar setup method as Apple's AirPods – just bring an AirTag close to your iPhone and it connects. You can assign an AirTag to an item and name it using defaults like "Keys" or "Jacket," or use a custom name instead. Apple says AirTag location data is kept private and anonymous with end-to-end encryption.

AirTags can be placed in a bag or pocket on their own, or attached to a range of Apple-designed AirTag accessories.

Once an AirTag is set up, it will appear in the new Items tab in the Find My app, where you can view the item's current or last known location on a map. If you misplace an item and it's within Bluetooth range, you can use the Find My app to play a sound from the AirTag to help locate it. You can also ask Siri to find an item, and AirTag will play a sound if it is nearby.

Each AirTag is equipped with the Apple-designed U1 chip using Ultra Wideband technology, enabling what Apple calls "Precision Finding" for iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 users. This technology can more accurately determine the distance and direction to a lost AirTag when it is in range. As you move, Precision Finding fuses input from the camera, ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope, and then can guide you to an AirTag using a combination of sound, haptics, and visual feedback.

If an AirTag is separated from its owner and out of Bluetooth range, the Find My network can help track it down. You can place AirTag into Lost Mode and be notified when it is in range or has been located by the Find My network. If a lost AirTag is found by someone, they can tap it using their iPhone or any NFC-capable device and be taken to a website that will display a contact phone number for the owner, if they have provided one.

The trackers can be personalized with custom engravings, including emoji. AirTags start at $29 each or $99 for a four-pack. Online orders open this Friday, with AirTags shipping April 30.

Could you use this tag to put inside your checked suitcase when you travel and find out whether your suitcase reached its destination with you?

As long as there are iPhone users around at the destination, why not? That's actually a good idea since the airlines often have trouble locating lost luggage. Just hope that it doesn't start beeping since that will probably alarm the bomb squad ...

I need to put one of these on my airpods case. Hopefully it will be more consistent than “Find My” has been with airpods.

I want this tech built into my next AirPods case. I loose that case 12 times a day in my house, but hanging a tracker off of it seems is too ugly / big. Might be willing to get a case that fit it in to the back, it's bulky but maybe that won't be too bad for now.
My thoughts exactly. This would make the next version an insta-buy for me.

wow, they are reasonably priced!
Maybe. But Apple continue to gouge those of us in Australia (at least). We continue to pay the "far far away" tax, despite being as close to Apple's manufacturers as the US is.

The exchange rate Apple is using for Airtags (and pretty much everything) id 0.73 Aus/US. The actual exchange rate is, and has been all year, at or above ~0.77. A cool extra 4% profit margin.

Apple is quick to adjust item-prices UP historically when the exchange rate changes. Not so rapid on the way down!

ok, i feel for you, but obviously i'm speaking in terms of their pricing in general, not market-specific.

I'd pay a minimal upcharge if this was integrated into the case for the next generation AirPods.

Hoping someone will come out with a AirPods case with a slot for the air tag to slide into.

I wonder how this will work with long distance travel. There’s been a couple of occasions where my luggage was put on a different flight and it was sent to me 3-4 days later.

If I would use an AirTag in this case - it would be seperated from me, its owner, for a long time. So will it start beeping like crazy then while attached to (or inside) the suitcase? And will the luggage handler, who happens to have an iPhone, get a popup that an “unidentified” AirTag is near them?
