Oh give me a break. Do you even pay rent or live on your own?

I piss 350 dollars.

Good for you, but not everyone is interested in paying 350 for a glorified accessory with no real world benefit  for all you know that guy might well have a much bigger wallet than you.

Not everyone is so careless with their money. It doesn't matter how cheap something is or how easily I can afford it, I won't buy it if I don't think it's worth the price.

I see it differently. What I expect from a smart watch is really simple:
Look great and work very well as a watch!

Does the Apple Watch satisfy both criteria? I believe that it does.

On top of that I get all the "smart" features, which I will definitely not use 100%. Some of them are interesting though. I won't use the messaging stuff, but I like the notifications. I also like the fitness features and the Apple Pay. In total, Apple Watch is giving me more than a standard Watch offers. That is enough for me to want it? Do I need the extra features? Probably not, but the same thing was said when the iPad came out...

Add to that the many personalization options and Apple convinced me I want the watch.

I guess that's the point - I don't care about my money or about saving it.

Never have. Who cares?

$350 doesn't get you a better watch than the apple watch in most cases.

$350 may be more for accessories than you are used to but just find a watch with high grade stainless steel and sapphire crystal that sells for $350 or less.
Now find one that also has smart watch functions.

There is none.

Is this some sort of joke? What is that thing?

Does anyone know how they connected the watch to the projector during the keynote? The demo watch does not have any cables attached to it and during the maps demo it actually shows somebody walking. Was it a recorded demo?

Of course, Apple doesn't have a stainless steel watch with a sapphire crystal at $350, either.

This!

This is a $350 watch, you're not getting a Patek Philippe for that price, and I do know you don't even know what a Patek is.

Yes, for $350, if you buy ir right, you can get a very basic and maybe uninteresting automatic watch, or a quartz watch with a chronometer, or a gold plated normal watch, or a $50-100 worth citizen with a brand more known by it's clothes.

And all of them are much less interesting than this.

Apple watch thickness

My favorite watch is a 1970's Seiko automatic winding dive watch. It is 12.2mm thick, the same as the Apple Watch. Unless you are really looking for a thin watch, and those are nice too, I don't think a 12.2mm thick watch is a problem. Not for me, anyway. I think the Apple Watch will actually appear slightly thinner, since part of the back is convex, and will probably depress into the back of your wrist a bit more than the back of my dive watch does.

I think the lugs on my watch are a bit lower on the watch body than the Apple Watch, so the Apple watch/band may not sit as flush to the wrist as the dive watch.

Price comparison, the current version of my watch retails for $450.00 but typically can be bought for about $250.

The dive watch does have a sapphire crystal... looks great after 40 years!

Tissot, for example, actually does. For less than that.

Do 350 dollar tissots have sapphire and high grade stainless steel?
If so, that's a good deal for sure although it probably has a battery movement.
Obviously the apple watch has very interesting innards, not comparable to disposable quartz movements.

Fair point. I think, like with many products, it will get better. This is generation 1 of the Apple Watch and future models are bound to bring a more relevant design in the future.

Yup. This time I'm going to follow my own advice and NOT get the first gen Apple watch. Learned that lesson with the first gen Macbook Air and first gen iPad.. Second gen units were much improved.

I got a first generation iPhone, learned to code for it, and each year make enough income from that to pay for one of each successive version (and iPads, too). And I got to enjoy using it for a year before the second version came out.

Highly recommend the early adopter route :)

Stainless steel and sapphire. It is quartz at that price, of course.

Stainless steel comes in different grades no?
I believe apple is using the same grade in Breitling, Panerai, etc; not sure about Tissots.

There are different compositions. I have not seen any specifics about Tissot, but they are quality watches.

It seems there should be some stainless steel automatic chrono Swatches with sapphire in this price range, but the glass info is very hard to find.

304 - Seiko 5 and lower. Samsung and LG uses 304.
316L (most - Omega, Panerai) Apple Watch uses 316L. Apparently Moto uses 316L.
and
904L (only Rolex uses it). It has a higher nickel content which can cause allergic reaction for some users.

904L is indeed the best but it comes at a cost to users who can be allergic to it.

Very nice.

Do bargain watches in the 350 range typically use 316L or 304?

Maybe not with chrono. It seems those chronos have at least some plastic in the casing.

However, there might be some synthetic component in the movement.

Wow, so ugly and thick. Wouldn't wear it if it was free.
Not ugly at all. I´ve had the opportunity to try the apple watch and this device gave me confidence that, as an industry, the smartwatch is not a fad or a stopgap -- it's not a netbook, fiercely attacking the laptop market until the iPad was fully baked. There is something in this trend and although Apple still needs to convince me "who" this is for and "why" I might be one of them, I'm reassured by what I saw. / Maya @ Timepiece Website
