KaBoom!

Demand may outstrip supply for the Duo.

The novelty of this device is going to have such huge appeal within the existing iPhone user base, and I'd wager it will see a bigger buy in from the female side of the aisle in and outside of the existing Apple market share, the price has come in lower than the rumours.

What a start for Ternus, a great start going into the price hike environment, the Duo in demo just looked awesome and exciting while solving a lot of real-world device interaction challenges that will inspire "want" in a lot of people, and that's all that matters for mass market.

This is a synergy hybrid device. Everything Apple has built so far is folded (yes unintended) into this one device and I think is going to prove to be equally as impactful as the original iPhone was. It has a high WANT quotient, that will over-ride any rational negatives i.e. the power of Novelty.

Apple have pushed harder on the on-device Ai chosen path.

I said they were really going to present this in a way that Apple are now in the Ai game and it's on their terms by offering a genuine alt choice to the OpenAi's of this world.

I actually think Apple is going to go some way to improve Ai's image over time compared to the current negative vibe and I don't think anyone else is positioned to actually achieve this, it's again synergy of the companies phsilospical posture and culture combined with it's know how and mass market reach.

Finally, the Tim bit at the start was nice touch (cause no one was expecting him to been seen at all, was that a clever leak) and for once wasn't too corny.

Overall hybrid Jobs-Ives-Forstall 2.0 we're back moment for me.

Most of us have iphone, macbook, ipad... so no one needs this. I guess if you travel a lot?
Same reason most people don’t carry a real digital camera everywhere. My wife carries her iPad pretty much everywhere and has the phone with her just for hotspotting the iPad and it is often inconvenient.

In Australia, prices are:
256GB = $3499
512GB = $3899
1TB = $4699

Too expensive for a phone. I would happily pay those prices for a MacBook but not a phone.

What I find interesting is this is basically the same price as buying an iPhone & an iPad. I can see the appeal of just carrying around one device….but personally I would rather have two separate devices….

I'm impressed with this new Duo phone. I assume Maps will be able to use the full screen real estate (nice)... would need a modified phone holder for the car's dash!

I wonder what the AppleCare+ cost will be?

Only works with usb c pencil? Odd choice
The Apple Pencil has nowhere to charge on the phone itself. That means the only Pencil that would work would be the USB-C version since you can charge it without the phone. I doubt they could fit the charging hardware onto the side of the phone. Given its thinness, a smaller stubby Apple Pencil that was rumored probably keeps falling off. Apple basically punted on a phone-only Apple Pencil due to those problems, so they went to the only existing product that could work.

So Apple doesn't copy anyone?

I mean, they even copied the Duo name!

Released by Google in 2023. I liked this design when I saw it, and it is good to see Apple has followed suite.

I've done that for the past year now. My iPad Pro 13 M4 has replaced my laptop, so I rarely use it as a tablet anymore. Whenever I need/want to read something while lounging around or in bed I would reach for my ZF7. I am gonna miss it, I honestly prefer this formfactor however OneUI could be slightly more refined. Plus I miss iMessage, I honestly didn't realize how many people I send text to cared about what messaging app I used but I guess they do. Also the more premium material in the Duo justified the price for me.

i'm a glasses wearer and have never had any issues wearing glasses or not wearing glasses with faceid. i've had multiple issues when doing any form of manual work and touchid not recognising my fingerprints however. Maybe try rescanning his face?
Your eyesight must not be that bad. If I have my glasses off and hold my phone close enough to read, it’s too close to my face and can’t scan. If I hold it at a normal distance, my eyes cross trying to see it and it can’t scan. I have to hold it away and intentionally uncross my eyes for it to scan, but by then it’s likely given up and refuses to continue until I punch in the passcode. Meanwhile Touch ID Just Works.

I feel like it needed that one app or usage case that makes it essential or extraordinary, for now it's a nice enough V1 gadget but a lot of money for something that your other devices already do, and in some cases do better.

So you think they copied a device with two separate internal screens and no external screen while folded?

I just had a look at images of some pixel fold model as I hadn't relly paid attention, didn't even knwo they existed. I've seen one Samsung fold device about 3 years ago. More clamshell.

Basically Apple have nailed it with the aspect ratio on the duo.

The pixels fold look woeful and ugly compared to the Duo.

It actually has the look of an open book in the marketing imagery on the apple site.

It's has the most aesthetically inviting shape and proportions.

Once again, I feel like this is a case where Apple is missing Steve Jobs storytelling. With this product, we got the what and the how, but we didn’t really get the why. Maybe John Ternus thinks it’s self explanatory. Steve Jobs would’ve explained why Apple created this product and why you would want it. Nobody really did that today. Does Apple think this is the future of iPhones? Or is this just where everyone else is going, and Apple thinks it needs to go there too?
The world will never see another Steve Jobs in our lifetime.
