..and you obviously have an income in which throwing $500-$900 is no problem for you. Great. That is not the case for all of us.

BTW, the iPad 1 hasn't even been out for 3 years.

I understand that Apple pretty much needed to do this but I think it would be pretty understandable that people would be upset about such a quick update, especially the processor that is 3x faster if not more.

Disposable income? No. But it's a business expense that's needed to be a legitimate developer to give users of my apps a proper experience. By putting that kind of care into the apps I develop, I ensure that my apps are worth buying, which makes it possible to keep up with new products. That, in turn, makes it possible to keep making great apps for ALL users. Not just the users of the latest devices.

And again, you're acting as if the iPad 3 is just suddenly useless. It's not, and you're behaving like a child if you want to pretend it is. I know I'm not the only developer that will continue to support all the way back to the iPad 1 with future apps. Hell, I still support the 1G iPhone and 1G iPod Touch when I can.

As for the iPad 1, I do seem to have my dates off by a few months. I got a year and a half out of it, then my mom got a further year out of it. She gave it to a friend, who's still using it. Either way, you have no argument against that. It's years old, is now three models behind, and *gasp*, it still functions!

Sure it does:
New Model
3.1
(b) exchange the Covered iPad with a replacement product that is new or
equivalent to new in performance and reliability, and is at least (MEANING CAN FUNCTION BETTER, newer product) functionally equivalent to the original
product. If Apple exchanges the Covered iPad, the original product becomes Apple’s property and the
replacement product is your property, with coverage for the remaining period of the Plan.

ADH costs $49, limit of (2) damage claims because YOU DROPPPED / BROKE IT!
3.2
If during the Plan Term you submit a valid claim notifying Apple that the Covered iPad has failed due to
accidental damage from handling (“ADH”) (YOU DROPPED/BROKE IT), Apple will subject to the service fee described below either (i)
repair the defect using new or refurbished parts that are equivalent to new in performance and
reliability, or (ii) exchange the Covered iPad with a replacement product that is new or equivalent to new
in performance and reliability, and is at least functionally equivalent to the original product (both
individually known as a “Service Event”). ADH coverage will expire and all of Apple’s obligations to
you under this section 3.2 will be fulfilled in its entirety before the end of the Plan Term when
Apple, as a result of ADH claims, has provided to you two (2) Service Events (MEANING IF YOU DID NOT DROP/BREAK IT AT LEAST TWICE, YOU CAN REPLACE IT AGAIN UNTIL YOU ARE HAPPY, AT NO ADDITIONAL COST).

I can swap out as many times as necessary, until they get tired of handing me iPad 3rd gens (defective because it gets hot if left at full brightness, sluggish in full Retna Games, etc). Defects that have been fixed with the iPad 4th gens; otherwise, why still sell 2nd Gen and drop the 3rd Gen if the 3rd Gen is not defective?

Let's look at all of section 3.1:

If during the Plan Term, you submit a valid claim by notifying Apple that (i) a defect in materials and
workmanship has arisen in the Covered iPad or, (ii) the capacity of the Covered iPad’s battery to hold an
electrical charge has depleted fifty (50%) percent or more from its original specifications
, Apple will
either (a) repair the defect at no charge, using new or refurbished parts that are equivalent to new in
performance and reliability, or (b) exchange the Covered iPad with a replacement product that is new or
equivalent to new in performance and reliability, and is at least functionally equivalent to the original
product. If Apple exchanges the Covered iPad, the original product becomes Apple’s property and the
replacement product is your property, with coverage for the remaining period of the Plan.

If the battery is still good what's the defect you're trying to claim?

Again, for the 100th time. It's not about not having "the best toy in the playground".

Whilst some here HAVE gone over the top with their complaints, I have put forward genuine concerns for the third gen iPad going forward, mainly down to the fact it has been discontinued and the iPad 2 left in the "iPad family".

And you are a presumptous arse because you hit out with the affordability line. I don't know what you do or earn or vice versa, and such comments are pointless. That was the point with my previous post.

Let's be fair now… I said 'Presumably you can't afford to upgrade so soon …' Notice that word 'presumably'? See, I admitted to being presumptuous. Secondly, I wasn't hitting out at anyone's wealth or lack thereof. I have admitted to being amongst those who can't afford an iPad right now. I was hitting out at the misguided notion that Apple somehow owes you 12 months between product updates. They don't. And if a developer now chooses to come out with an app that doesn't run perfectly on your now not-so-new 'new iPad', guess what—you still have plenty of choices. You can (1) not buy it, (2) complain to the developer, (3) upgrade to the latest iPad at that time, or (4) accept that life is like that sometimes and move on.

I think it would be a miracle that Apple Care + will give you a 4 to replace a 3 within the next six months. They are still replacing 3GS' for Christ's sake. I am happy with my Ipad 3. I find it a little devious on Apple's part to release this with the new adapter. The chip...eh...they do this with MacBook Pro specs a lot. The last two years were very incremental changes until the retina display without an optical drive. Still not ground breaking at that.

The iPad, like the iPhone, was established as a once a year event. Even the iPad 3 was considered incremental. This just reeks. They could have held off on iPad 3 production to get these adapters and this new chip. It is like a standard Blu Ray and then two months later the special edition is released. It is cheesy when they do it so it is cheesy that Apple pulled this. Was the end game really to sell more cables for $20 and adapters for $30? The chip, big whoop. Those of use with iPad 3's had plenty of 30 pin connecters so we were not really looking to change that, were we? Don't get me wrong, I love the new lightening adapter, but it is also not a game changer.

At the end of the day, I know that Jobs was just as interested in money as those running Apple without him. However, he was on record with things like this and things like the iPad mini as pointless cash grabs. He really did care about loyalty to the extent that if they betray that, it could eventually alienate the faithful, thus hurting your bottom line. Buy an iPhone and iPad every year, great. Start these little ****** upgrades mid cycle, people will wait longer to buy the new one. I didn't think I would be saying so soon after Jobs' death, but I am now gun-shy about purchasing new apple products in the yearly cycle rollout.

Logical for them to upgrade the classical iPad since they had to at least marginally redesign it for the lightning port.

Still those benchmarks are going to be interesting.

Although I understand Apple's motives for releasing this updated Ipad, it still doesn't make me feel better that I bought my Ipad 3 in late September. I'm kicking myself for not being patient when I had a hunch something like this was going to happen. :(

I have a feeling you'd be pretty perturbed if the auto company decided to release the vastly-upgraded-for-the-same-price 2014 Whoozitmobile in October of 2012, just one day after you bought the "new" 2013 model.

One day after? I'd be taking the car back. Just like anyone who just bought an iPad 3 in the past few days should do.

But if I had bought it 7 months prior? No. I have better things to worry about.

Wow! So much discussion, I had to skip 10 pages of it.

Love it. First time i felt it worthwhile updating since 1st gen.

Same here. I actually sold my 1 about 6 months after the 2 debuted. I have been feeling a case of iPad withdrawal, but just didn't want to jump for the 3 until after the intro for the mini. Now that the dust has settled, I'm leaning toward the iPad 4th gen.

THE IPAD 3 IS NOT OUTDATED. The iPad 4 is just better. Nothing breathtaking.

Thank you. In my own opinion, a device doesn't become outdated until there is no more new software pushed to it. If I had the same mentality as some others here, I should be mad as hell because my Mac Mini is less than a year old & has no USB 3.0 capability.

I still say ipad 3 owners will be getting an iPhone 1-style Apple Store credit before this is over with.

Oh okay, I see what you're saying; you're talking warranty claims instead of breakage. The only problem is Apple runs tests on all devices submitted for warranty claims. If you tell them, say, the battery's not up to snuff, they plug it into a Mac and run a diagnostic. If that diagnostic says the battery's fine, you get your same ipad back. (Believe me, I've tried this personally in the past.) if you're "lucky", they may offer you a replacement, but only at a 50% discount of a brand new one.

In short, they're not stupid. That legalese is ironclad.
I have a dead/faded pixel in the middle of my screen. It has been there for a long time, and I have ignored it for the most part. It really is a defect but I did not want to swap out iPads for no reason (especially since I still have iOS 5.1.1 JB). Once a JB comes out for the 4th Gen / iOS 6, that is when I plan to swap out. Also screen gets hot at full brightness, and battery dies quickly when screen is at full brightness. I am pretty sure I can get it to drop from 100% to 0 in 5 hours with full brightness running video, using bluetooth, etc. if I need to prove it. Additionally, I bought it on an AMEX which means if Apple does not take care of me, AMEX will - then like the SquareTrade post I can take that $$$ and buy something else if I so wanted to do so.

Yeah cause everyone has a disposable income of at least $500 every few months.

Its easy for you guys to sit here and say what cry babies we are when you weren't the ones that spent hard earned money on a model that got outdated in 6 months.

FYI, I don't have any iPad. Sold the iPad 2 with the intention of buying an iPad 3, and then realised I couldn't really justify the expense at that time. So I've accepted that's how it is for now and gone without. And yes, you are being a cry baby.

For the judgemental folks out there who think we are whining because we no longer have the newest toy, here is a better analogy of what we are thinking:

Imagine a sandwich that comes with meat, cheese, lettuce, and bread costs $5
You buy the sandwich and are happy until you find out that the next day that same sandwich now comes with twice the meat and twice the bread and a bag of chips and still costs $5.

There is no way you would not be pissed.

Most people wouldn't give a ****. If your biggest worry in life is that a sandwich now comes with more meat than one that you've already eaten (which kept you full, happy, and living), I greatly envy you.

A fair reply.

I'm not totally heart broken but I can't believe some of you act like this shouldn't cause any frustration or disappointment for iPad 3 users.

I know some people here are acting like babies and I understand why Apple would upgrade (the competition is catching up) but it does suck to spend $900 for the iPad 3 + accessories.

Do I expect Apple to hold back because I bought the iPad 3? Hell no. (unlike some here) but its definitely a blow to the gut.

This has to be the dumbest statement Ive ever heard.
You act like the new connector is HIV positive.
Its actually a better cable, faster, easier to use.
Whats the problem. It comes with a new charger, so again, whats the problem?
You can get an adapter if youre worried about current products you own that dock your 30pin phone.

I dont care if you avoid Apple from here on out because of the connector, it just blows me away when i hear these statements SMH.

It's not a dumb statement. I swear! What's wrong with you? It's my decision. Anyway, I know the new cable is better. Just not for me. I have several musical accessories, and don't feel like buying multiple adapters for a new phone. I would like my phone and iPad to match. So until I upgrade both, I'm glad I have the old iPad. How is that dumb? I'm saving money and am happy. And if you insult me one more time i'm reporting you for abuse/spam.

As said, outside looking in. You didn't buy an iPad 3, your opinion is irrelevant because it didn't affect you.

For breakfast yesterday I got the current McDonalds 2 Egg McMuffins for $3 deal. I guess by your thinking I should go in and scream at the manager because I had to pay full price for the same thing last week?

Apple made no guarantees whatsoever concerning how long you would have the most recent iPad. All technology becomes superseded, in this case it happened a few months earlier than expected. Please get over yourself.
