It's not a dumb statement. I swear! What's wrong with you? It's my decision. Anyway, I know the new cable is better. Just not for me. I have several musical accessories, and don't feel like buying multiple adapters for a new phone. I would like my phone and iPad to match. So until I upgrade both, I'm glad I have the old iPad. How is that dumb? I'm saving money and am happy. And if you insult me one more time i'm reporting you for abuse/spam.

Whatever.
No one insulted you, I said the statement was dumb. To avoid a Phone I believe you actually want, but wont buy because of a connector.....to me seems dumb.
You have a right to post a statement, I have a right to disagree with it.
Its a forum, report me, do what you want.

Also pissed that my ipad is totally gone, no upgrade program....6 months erghh, makes me feel sick, would have felt ok if it was a year.

Upgrade program? Why? You got exactly what you paid for. Your iPad is still supported, still under warranty, and still works fine.

If you are angry, then it's your own fault for expecting Apple to stop and wait just so you can feel better about your purchase. If you can't accept that any piece of consumer electronics might be updated, even in a few weeks, then seek help, or don't buy consumer electronics.

Or sell your iPad and buy a new one.

Well said

I don't want to be "cool" and brag about "having the best" like some. I want value for money and I don't feel I got that now.

A chip does not go from R&D to testing to product in six months. The A6X was ready back in March, they could have held off another month and given us the true next generation iPad but instead gave us the "iPad 2 with Retina Display".

I was looking forward to Real Racing 3 and Infinity Blade Dungeons, games which will now be an inferior experience on the third gen iPad with focus shifted, prematurely, to the fourth generation model.

I know you can't keep up with tech, it is a game you cannot win, but I cannot help feel a touch conned. I was never buying a new iPad next year, but after 12 months on the market I could accept a refresh ... seven months though is tough to swallow.

This is probably the closest example I've seen yet of an opinion that mirrors my own in almost every way. Well said, WeegieMac. Thanks for saying, so eloquently, what I meant to say several posts ago. The moderators have let me know that they didn't think the way I put it was so... ehem... eloquent. :D

now my 3 month old iPad 3 is obsolete. really didn't see that coming so quickly. now i guess i'll just see what i can get on ebay for it.

Still works. Still runs the latest, greatest apps. Still functions. Still out-specs the iPad 2 and iPad mini.

I believe every one of those negates the term "obsolete".

It's also not a service event, as there was no accidental handling damage.

Then there can be no AppleCare+ claim initiated. You're just making assumptions based on an incorrect reading of the terms.

You will not get a new lightning iPad under AC+ just because you want a replacement. If you want to make the "Trading Places" bet, I'll be glad to.

Please point me to another thread on MR where multiple users have been able to use AppleCare to upgrade to a newer model of their device.

If you are correct, I feel stupid for having paid for a iPhone 3G, 4, and 5 when I could have just bought the 3G and upgraded for free all this time. "Dear Genius, this iPhone 3G 16 GB is defective because it won't hold all of my music. The only device that will is the iPhone 5 64GB - and I demand a free upgrade now!"
I cannot point out an iPhone, but Apple has upgraded MacBooks on many occasions. Google lemon policy, MacBook new model.

I am literally very shocked with such a pathetic strategy of Apple of lunching 4th Generation IPad in such a short time period :eek:

After waiting so long for the New iPad (3rd Generation), i bought this just 3.5 months ago. and now its OUTDATED AND APPLE NO MORE SELLING IT ON THEIR ONLINE STORES ?????? (rather selling iPad 2)....unbelievable :(

Indeed Apple is supposed to lunch the new products / updated versions...but in my opinion its really unfair with those people who bought just few months ago....And specially annoying for the people like me who love to upgrade new products in a reasonable time period and now i am feeling that i have wasted my money.....NO WAY to upgrade (buy new) now until Its really make sense for me

For sure It will create disloyalty......as it does for me.

Extremely Mad :mad::mad: !!!

Only a fool expects Apple to hold back updates so a few people who are more obsessed with having the latest and greatest can feel good about their purchase a little longer.

Apple gave you exactly what you agreed to pay for. If you are angry, it's your fault. Not Apple's. Why do you think Apple owes it to you to hold back updates?

I'd certainly be a lot more pissed I found out Apple had a newer and better iPad but wasn't selling it because they wanted to wait a few more months to alleviate some stupid superficial necessity to have the latest and greatest.

wahhhhh.
I was waiting for the new Ipad 4 so I could buy the cheaper Ipad 3 but they don't even sell it.

I blame MacRumors

As a recent purchaser of now obsolete iPad3, I blame MacRumors for not providing any indication that iPad4 is about to be released.

How can people make informed Apple product purchasing decision if rumor sites don't do their job?

The iPad 2 And mini do not run at retina.
For a retina display you need double sized images..

Which means that most games will be including art at both resolutions for a long time to come. iPad 3 can run iPad 2 apps when the processing power isn't enough, and for things that benefit from high res text and graphics but don't need the processing power, it can use the same high res images they'll be doing for iPad 4. Worst case is there will be 3d games that won't be optimized for ipad 3 so they'll play at a lower resolution or frame rate, but I assume most devs will want to sell to ipad 2 and ipad mini owners as well so I doubt there will be many apps or games that are iPad 4 only.

Right now, how many apps are there that require iPad 3?

You'll be waiting until October 2013 for the 5th generation iPad.

Nobody knows either way.

same here... I hate lightning... I feel it's the worst mistake Apple has made...

It's another thing you need to see in person to really get. When it was announced I thought it was stupid. Once I saw it and used it, the old one looks huge and bulky and it's hard to imagine that they stuck with something so clunky so long. Sure, the transition is a drag especially for people with third party devices and other devices with the old plug, but in the long run it is a huge improvement.

Really? Because I'd be saying the same thing to a car owner bitching about 2013 models coming out. Or someone complaining about last year's fashion now being out of date.

It has nothing to do with brand, just the sheer idiocy of people with their blind consumerism. It's sickening.

All these people are up in arms because a new product came out. Why not be up in arms about something that actually matters?

Or be up in arms about all of the above. Consumers being effectively ripped off and short changed is worth screaming about too.

... You have this mentality of "It's **** unless it's the latest model." It's idiotic, and blind consumerism. There are people here who are looking at their iPad 3 that's a few months old as if it's worthless and the object of scorn. Where a few hours ago they were perfectly happy with them. That's beyond stupid.

The lifespan isn't shortened at all. You have the iPad 2 and iPad mini both running A5 chips. The mini is brand new, and has lower specs than the iPad 3, so there's no "shortened" lifespan here. If anything, it's been significantly lengthened, as more developers will add options for better performance to cater to the iPad mini.

Again. These complaints equate to being from children throwing tantrums over someone else's toy being shinier. It's pathetic.

I totally agree with your post...but as an iPad 3 owner (and techie), I am concerned about my several-month old major purchase that is now 3x slower than the iPad 4...ditto for the graphics. I don't know all the technical differences between the 3 and 4 but when it comes to CPUs and GPUs being 2-3x faster, the apps are going to start requiring those kinds of performance.

Will it be tomorrow? Of course not...but I think next summer or Fall 2013, a lot of games are going to play substantially better on the iPad 4 rather than the 3...or at least that is my fear.

Things change and advance. That's how it works, will continue to work, and always has worked. If it wasn't for this method of advance, we'd still be riding around in horse-drawn carriages.

And probably bitching about how that damned candlemaker has a new, slightly brighter burning candle than the ones we have at home that are only half used.

64G Verizon, flawless

Thanks for the reply. I've got a 32gb Verizon that I see is $300 for flawless now. I bet it was $450 or so before the announcement. For $300 (or $250 if they downgrade it from flawless to good), it's just not worth flipping. I'll stick with the iPad 3 this time.

Very smart of you to lock in a price with them, just in case. Kudos.

I'm sure apple didn't want to update the ipad so quickly - having a major product launch every 6 months evens out the hype and revenue and generates more consistent exciement. But I think their bigger priority was to get the Lightning standard out ASAP since it's a fundamental change to their own product compatibility, and if they changed only the dock on the iPad folks would have been mildly confused if they bought the "new ipad with the new connector...but it's the same ipad as before." So they decided to make it a minor spec bump at the same time.

Also, Apple was probably planning on doing this for a while hence one of the reasons they started naming it just "iPad" instead of "iPad #"...it takes on an update model much closer to the macs in which they can really upgrade specs whenever they want, as opposed to "iPhone #" which has expectations of the same time every year.

I agree with lots of whining going on...
I actually LIKE being an early adopter with the ipad...it's the only device or gadget that i'd do that with---because i love it so much, and it has become my most usable computer...I don't mind paying $100 for 1 yr use of the newest model....in this case a little less than 1 yr, but I can utilize the extra CPU....let's just hope the battery life doesnt suffer due to new CPU, or maybe the heat issues have been rectified?

anyone take the 64gb black wifi off my hands? $575? :)
:)

I feel your pain, but because Apple dropped model numbers in their naming convention and knowing their MacBook Policy, I purchased AC+ with future proofing my purchase in mind. Last year there was discussion of a 6 mo upgrade cycle but everyone thought Apple would be crazy to do so. I was surprised they upgraded so quickly this year, but it was not completely unexpected.

I am going to make a full faith attempt to get upgraded at no additional cost. I think others should do so as well provided you have AC+ or are within the original warranty period if you did not. Apple can afford the loss and should learn a lesson (not that they should not have expected people to demand this change).

When will you be trying this? I'm very interested in how this works out..

See, now this is a fair and rational take on it - the first I've really seen in this thread. Good on you for that.

It's a concern, but at the same time, you'd be looking at the same kind of timeframe, give or take a few months, if they announced the iPad 4 in February/March.
With Apple keeping the A5 around, support will remain. Developers aren't stupid - if they lock down an app to only the latest devices, they wipe out most of the potential customers. That isn't what any developer wants to do, as more users = more income.

I'd say that iPad 3 users will still be able to use the latest apps for at least another couple years before the age really show. Look at games like NOVA 3 and Modern Combat 3. They're arguably benchmark games, yet they still play great on iPad 2's, which are now two generations behind.

While it's a long-term concern, I don't see it as a worry for a couple years. I know with my apps that I won't have to change anything to support the iPad 3 for that long, and I'm sure many other developers see the same.

That's just silly. I am holding my iPad 3 in my hand right now, and it didn't explode or anything. If anything else, Safari feels a little snappier now! :D

The existence of a new model doesn't make yours obsolete.

No, not immediately. But it will be obsolete sooner than most Apple products that typically have an annual update cycle.
