Spotify is shut out? Apple needs to grow up and stop this pettiness.

hopefully it has Bluetooth.
Not shut out. Just not mentioned. Why should Apple give free advertising to a company that is constantly complaining about it. The original has bluetooth just cannot be used. I would love if they turned it on. But we are an entirely Apple household so Airplay is great.

The HomePod mini is 802.11n not '802.11ac with MIMO' like the HomePod.
Very much hoping it does 5GHz though. Nothing in specs on Apple's site.

At some point Apple would do themselves a favor if they allowed their computers to use these (and HomePods) as computer speakers.

That’s really the key here. Mixing and matching different smarthome entities is a nightmare. We’re all HomeKit, too. I wish Apple would do whatever necessary to motivate developers and manufacturers to speed up products, but five years ago this wasn’t even a thing, so...

I wonder if any one will create a external battery pack to the HomePod Mini.
at 20W it should be possible to make a small lipo pack to power this thing

Love your phones and iPads, but no Spotify support in HomePod Mini?!? Really?!?

You have done nothing in your announcement to shake me loose from the Amazon devices I already have. I prepaid for Spotify for a year. See next September, maybe?!?

Could be a thing, but powering a pair would require something pretty big.

Anybody have solid info on combining these into multiples? Two? More?

They didn't say no spotify. They said amazon, Pandora and others. I'm sure it will be there as well as any one else who wants to be.

That is what I am wondering - how much more capable is this than the first generation
Not sure it's really more capable at all. We're talking Apple's A8 chip in the original HomePod vs the S5 from last year's Apple Watches. One was the flagship iPhone CPU back in it's time, the other is a chip for a watch with much more limitations, way smaller battery and less functionality.

Only benchmarks I found with a quick search for both chips are Sunspider 1.0 results (over at notebookcheck.com). The A8 scores around 355, while the S5 sits around 2.000 (with lower meaning better).

No idea how meaningful those numbers really are for the use case here, but they may give a rough idea of how both chips compare.

You can Airplay from Macs to HomePod so I assume you could do the same thing with these.

That’s not the same thing though. Once you switch the app the sound is coming from it falls apart. I’d want them to behave like my sound blaster amp does now where all audio is routed through them without any intervention, after the original setup of course.

Intercom finally!

But my most interesting feature no one yet has mentioned nor the article.

Personalised updates!!!!!!!! Though I hope it’s not HomePod only.

Now I wonder if this can be asked on the iPhone or finally added to the morning alarm. (Siri Shortcuts has sucked for this) though that’s my skill for making a decent shortcut that isn’t glitching).

I’m never getting a smart speaker, no matter what. Similarly I don’t have Hey Siri activated in my devices. I don’t trust these devices to care so much about privacy, with the leaks about people listening to audio snippets... no, thanks. Granted, I know Apple provides an option to delete Siri & Dictation History... but I’ll pass. I have Bluetooth speakers from Sony and Bose that I rarely use anyways.
