One thing is for damn sure, Steve would have NEVER EVER IN A MILLION YEARS allowed a 3 year old non updated product sell next to a new flagship product, especially for $100 less while making a smaller iPad that sells for the same price as the 3 year old iPad. It was mind boggling how stupid that was, when I originally heard about the iPad 2 selling next to the air my jaw dropped. At least they're trying to make it better now.

This is interesting. So no 8gig 5c in the US and most other countries. Instead, we still have the 4s and its 30 pin connector. Maybe they will release it to the US later in the year when the iPhone 6 comes out. But, IMO, I really think they need to drop the last 30-pin device in their inventory. Let it go and move on Mr. Cook.

i wish they would do away with the extra charge for 3g/4g chip. just sell the model with the chip included and be done with it.

Despite being huge, the iPad 4 should actually perform better than the iPad Air in most tasks--since it is 32bit, there will be a lot more usable RAM for iOS.

the iPad air is really similar to the iPad 4....What is new, an upgrade processor and thinner? Screen & RAM are identical they are really recycling components...with these refreshes.

Air is nothing like iPad 4, it's much much lighter. The term "air" isn't arbitrary. Having used an iPad 3, Air feels much more like a mini tablet in terms of usage.

With a Blu-ray drive! Sorry. That just slipped out.

I just bought a Blu-ray external and it sure would be nice if Apple would write a player for them. It's a jungle out there.

Forget blu ray, when are we getting 4K movie releases on iTunes or Amazon? Netflix started to stream 4k on select ISP's already.

This discontinuing and relaunching of old products seems very un-apple like. They seem lost. I don't even usually say this, but Steve REALLY wouldn't have let this happen. Apple is supposed to move forward, not backward.

They're not lost, just moving the line forward. The iPad 2 is finally put out to pasture and the iPad 4 is the same price as the retina iPad mini. You get a retina screen, but with more real estate than the current mini. My wife's iPad 2 is still going strong and quite usable for her mobile needs. It's a good move for Apple, although they should consider lowering the price to $299.

Anyone who shelled out $400 for an iPad 2 in the last couple of months is an idiot, let's face it.

EDIT: Or uninformed. What I meant was that if they paid for an iPad 2 and are complaining about the iPad 4 being re-released in favour of the iPad 2, they really are silly for knowingly buying outdated tech at a high price.

I feel sorry for the sad sap that purchased the prehistoric iPad 2 between Sep and yesterday for the same price as the better in every facet iPad 4

Why, people still pay $250-400 for an iPad1 on ebay all the time.

Yes for $399 you can have a 16 GB iPad with just a few apps. And don't forget to throw old apps and buy new ones like trashing old stuff from your fridge, frequently.Because with 16 GB and no way to expand memory, the retina screen apps eat up your memory fast!

Wow this is just a very unexpected move that seems very un-Apple like. Apple is supposed to be moving at the technology forefront, not trying to bring older products back from the dead. Still, the iPad 4 seems like a far more appealing option than the iPad 2.

I always assumed that the iPad 2 was to make the iPad Mini and iPad Air look like a bargain, at least within the Apple eco-system.

Come on Apple, we need more storage

My 64GB iPhone can't hold my music anymore. Especially with photos and movies being taken. And an iPad definitely needs more storage space. Minimum size now should be 32GB. We need a 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and even a 256GB option. Memory is not that expensive.

I suspect the problem (as many see it) is this...

Board meeting in the past: So, iPhone 5S was good, 5C OK but lessons learned, 6 in the pipeline, let's set about designing a real game changer in 7.

Board meeting now: Have we milked the 5 series for every last cent? Our analysts reckon that if we re-release this in configuration X and that in configuration Y, we might make P and add an extra 0.003243 % to stock value. Let's do that now and worry about the future later.

There is nothing wrong with the above in principle, but it is boring. And to my mind, Apple is becoming very boring indeed. We wait, and we wait, and we wait. Finally we get a vaguely worthwhile update, which is "OK". It's sad. I came to the Apple party quite recently, and it feels like one where many of the guests are just leaving.

Decisions about re-releasing a product like iPad 4 are wholly unrelated to decisions about new product development. If you think there's an either/or dichotomy to new product development and maximizing the value of current lines then you REALLY don't understand how a company like apple operates.

Awesome, we can buy an outdated product for a premium price! That's so innovative!

Seriously, some people in this forum are very bizarre!!

So, you would rather have Apple continuing to sell the iPad 2 (which this iPad 4 is replacing it) instead?

What on earth is wrong with people here?

How is $100 less than the flagship iPad Air a premium price?

Anyone who shelled out $400 for an iPad 2 in the last couple of months is probably fuming right now.

Anyone who bought an iPad 2 in the last couple months was highly likely to be a business or school. They don't care about things like this.

Tim Cook is more businessman than Steve Jobs. He is trying to max out profit he possibly can and squeeze as much money as possible.

It looks clear to me that he was trying to clear out iPad 2 inventory then relaunch iPad 4 to clear out iPad 4 inventory. I strongly believe iPad 4 will take out again when iPad Air 2 comes out.

-The average person couldnt tell the difference, and it's not like it really matters.

-Oh, my mistake, it's 100 Mhz slower.

Mhz stopped being the best indicator of performance a long time ago. Go read some reviews on the A7, the performance gains are not small.

Edit: My bad. Didn't realize we were comparing the Air and Mini here. Same processor generation... MHz definitely applies.
