Tim Cook is more businessman than Steve Jobs. He is trying to max out profit he possibly can and squeeze as much money as possible.

It looks clear to me that he was trying to clear out iPad 2 inventory then relaunch iPad 4 to clear out iPad 4 inventory. I strongly believe iPad 4 will take out again when iPad Air 2 comes out.

What makes you think they had inventory to clear out? The "businessman" you speak of is renowned for his supply chain management. Apple wasn't clearing out iPad 2's, they were still producing them because people were still buying them. Now they've discontinued iPad 2 production and restarted iPad 4 production because iPad 2 sales are finally dwindling. They didn't have a bunch of iPad 4's sitting unsold all this time.

If you are a true Apple fan, you'd have bought the Ipad 4 when it was launched, and you will buy it again now because it's re-launched.

I feel sorry for the sad sap that purchased the prehistoric iPad 2 between Sep and yesterday for the same price as the better in every facet iPad 4

Agree, but also think that someone so uninformed about technology that they purchased an iPad 2 during this time frame will probably remain unaware of this upgrade for some time as well or not worry about it one way or the other. Some people seem perfectly happy with their iPad 2s.

This is a very a common update. The only thing that worries me is that those updates are usually done at the same time a new line of products are introduced. Does that mean we are going to have to wait longer for new products? I hope it's because a new line of products is going to be announced soon...

Forget blu ray, when are we getting 4K movie releases on iTunes or Amazon? Netflix started to stream 4k on select ISP's already.

That is why I didn't buy "Gravity" yet. I don't want to purchase it now, just to re-purchase it again in 4K later.

How are they not innovating?

Have you not seen the new Mac Pro?

Have you not seen the 'rumours' about the iWatch?

I don't understand how, just because they announce a lower end iPad option, they're not 'innovating'.

Looking forward to an explanation :)

Except for the Mac Pro, which is a niche product that represents a fraction of a fraction of Apple's total sales and income, there is nothing innovative on your list. Samsung already has a "smart" watch on the market that is languishing. A rumor doesn't constitute innovation in any way.

So you're pointing me to an article that was written before the iPad Air actually began selling? Point me to an article about how many they actually sold at the price point next to the iPad Air. Also, point me to how many iPad minis they sold. Because I'm pretty sure the retina mini totally sold out the iPad 2. It was a stupid move to ever allow the iPad 2 on the market in 2014, you can't deny that. If that wasn't the case, they wouldn't have replaced it with the 4 today making themselves look indecisive.

The iPad 2 needed to be gotten rid of, I'm not denying that. But the success of the iPad 2 despite the mini's introduction indicates there is room for a full-sized model at $399. Not everyone is enamored with the size of the Mini.

I'm not sure why the introduction of the Air is relevant. It starts at $499, not $399. The whole point of this is to have a full-sized offering at $399.

At the end of the day, only Apple knows the precise numbers, and it seems that the 2 still sold well enough to justify a replacement. Otherwise, they wouldn't have replaced it with anything and told you to buy a mini.

What is with these "Apple is lost" comments? If bringing back a discontinued product to replace a way past it's prime older product is considered lost, then what do you make of Google? They purchased Motorola and then had to dump them, talk about being lost.

If Apple is lost because of this then Google is walking with it's eyes closed towards the edge of a cliff.

The only difference between the iPad Air and 4th generation is the weight, thickness, and 64 bit (which isn't really useful yet). At $399, it's a good deal. There should be a 32gb option though.

It never made sense to me to offer the iPad 2 next to the iPad Air with an only $100 difference in price.

What this suggests is that a new A8 iPad Air will replace the current one and the iPad 4 will remain the $399 offering. The A7 Air will be discontinued, ...for now.

Another prediction: The retina mini will remain A7 and may only get minor updates. The new, 1024 X 768, 5.5 to 6 inch iPad nano will debut with A7 as well, and the "full cellular" version will allow it to make phone calls.

This is a pretty decent idea. The iPad 4 is still a powerful tablet, it doesn’t have anything “missing” like the iPad 2 ... and it only gives up some small % of performance and dimension for $100 savings (if you’re only considering a full sized iPad).

I agree. But Apple should have done this from the get go. I'm still not sure why they sold the iPad 2. Just adds to fragmentation for developers.

Is the second one even noticeable?

In everyday work, hardly. In games / software video decoding, to some degree, I think.

-The average person couldnt tell the difference, and it's not like it really matters.

Well, the saturation difference between my rMini and iPad 3/4 is staggering. The latter produce way better colors and not even after hours of using the rMini does one "acclimatise". The rMini does have a washed-out screen.

Nevertheless, despite the bad screen, I'm pretty happy with it. Hope the next iteration will have a much better screen.

I kinda agree with this statement. It's the exact same feeling I got when I read this news.

Me too. It's not a bad move that the iPad 4 should be sold as the entry-level iPad, but that's what they should have done when they released the iPad Air. By then the 2 was already 3 generations old.
