I just ordered Iphone 3GS 32gb 30 minutes ago and I have to pay $499 using early upgrade. I read on the part where i see the data plan price including the iphone price that i will be able to have standard iphone upgrade on 7/27/09. I keep continue pre-order it and at the end, I can choose either store pick up (it says june 19) or online (free shipping). I chose store pick up at it says that i can come on june 19 and bring id, credit card and ssn. my question is, will i be able to get it june 19 or i have to wait till 7/27/09 ?

So you paid more to upgrade sooner? Why? How long until you were eligible for a standard subsidized price?

Shocked at Macrumors forum

Wow, I am shocked you folks didn't like the new 3GS!

I suspect most of the negative ratings are from people weirdly thinking they had a right to upgrade pricing on the new phone while in 2yr contract.

I thought the new 3gs was a great upgrade from the prior one.

I just want to make sure of something before I do this.

My fiance and I are not able to upgrade until December, which is fine and what was expected. However, her dad and brother are not very tech savvy and simply want the iPhone 3G. They are both eligible for upgrades. Can they buy the new phones and sign up for the required data, and then swap our 3G phones for their 3GS phones by switching sim cards? Everyone would have the required data plans. Seems like it would be fine and no different than someone selling their phone to someone else.

The more I look at the 3G S, the more it looks like a stopgap model meant to keep people buying iPhones until the real update is ready. Speed bumped and with a better camera, but not with any really revolutionary changes. I wouldn't be surprised to see a remodeled iPhone in January (higher resolution screen, OLED screen, multicore CPU and/or GPU, front-facing camera, etc.).

One thing that seems bizarre to me is why they added the white model. Of all the iPhones I've seen, I've only seen one single person who didn't have some sort of protector over his, and the only reason I noticed it is because it slipped out of his hands and dropped onto the cement sidewalk, cracking the glass face. The vast majority of people are going to cover these up anyway unless Apple comes up with a grippier surface, so what's the point of adding colors (which complicates your inventory processes)?

People are bonkers these days, just cause AT&T won't give them the new gs as a gift midway through their contacts they are on the verge of a revolt. That's greed for you.

About the case thing, not one person I know has a case for there iPhone, but hey maybe that's just how we roll in the UK. lol..

I definitely hope the next iPhone is improved a lot more than this one, as thats when I'll be getting one :D

My order states:

IPHONE 3G S BLACK 32GB-USA
Custom configured
Ships: Delivers by June 19th However, I did add overnight shipping for extra just in case.

But if i decide to cancel and reorder and choose the Pick Up option will my name be at the bottom of the 7am waiting list?

Really? PAYG is cheaper than contract on 02? Got some more numbers there, I am interested...

It really depends upon your usage and how long you plan on keeping the phone for.

The 32Gb 3GS on pay and go is £540, if you throw a £20 per month simplicity simcard in that it gives you 600 anytime mins a month, 1200 texts and a free bolt on, so you can choose unlimited wifi or data or whatever takes your fancy. That means over 18 months the total cost is £892.44 and 24 months £1010.16. With a 30 day term contract. And you can always go back to the pay and go instead of simplicity. O2 unlimited gives you unlimited o2 to o2 texts and phone calls for a £15 top up per month and when you get the iphone on pay and go you get 12 months free data and wifi.

On pay monthly, the tariff which offers the same 600 mins (only 500 texts) is £34.26 a month. On that tariff for 18 months it costs £274.23 for the phone and therefore the cost is £890.91 for 24 months the phone is £175.19 and hence total cost is £997.43.

For me I only need the £15 O2 unlimited Pay and Go Sim card, a tariff you just cannot get on pay monthly. Total cost over 18 months for that is £870 and 24 months is £1020. Now that's not taking into account the fact that after several months of top ups, due to the free O2 to O2 calls meaning I have accrued a lot of credit on the phone, I can just avoid topping up by £15 for a few months and thus reduce the "average" monthly top up amount to around £8-11. At a guess I would say over 24 months my total cost would be around £950.

For me personally not having a contract is golden. The abundance of minutes which used to only be available on contract is now a thing of the past. If you are a heavy user talking on multiple networks or heavy texter, simplicity is a good way to go. If you are a light user in terms of calls and texts, the Pay and Go route is much better. It is pretty self evident that Apple update their phone every 12 months so this way allows you to update as frequently or infrequently as you wish without O2 shafting you with the contract.

You are right, they changed the status on the front page...
Pre-order now and get it June 19

well as long as it comes in that day.

If i am a current Iphone 3G owner will i just have to swap the Sim cards?

ohh so great!

MMS, voice control, video camera, better GPS,etc... all these features can be built into existing iphones... and i not apple do that i they say they care about environment selling non sense iphone. What about a SD card for memory instated of keeping sell iphones with flash memory.

This is the same old argument I hear. You miss the point. Why exclude existing 3G owners from upgrading? If Apple wants to sell more iphones and expand their market shares, then they would sell the 3Gs for $199 to existing 3G owners. In this economy, I doubt many 3G owners except diehard loyalists would spend $399 for the 3Gs which is not a breakthrough product by any measure.

If you think it is a not a breakthrough product (which I agree) then why does everyone want to upgrade so badly? If I had a 3G, I wouldn't bother upgrading it honestly even for $200 or $300 (whatever the cheaper price is for new customers).

You can't expect at&t suffer from losts just so everyone can upgrade early. It's a contract. It has terms that you agreed on when you signed it.

They are not really excluding anyone. From the looks of it, you are eligible to upgrade after so many months (also your purchase plan and payment history which doesn't make sense imo). In a few months, you'll be able to upgrade as well.

When did you get your 3G? At the release? it's been what? 12 months? and you signed a 18 month or 24 month contract? so you are still missing 6 to 12 months from your contract which is a lot.

so i just notice on the email to my in store reservation

Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

so my instore reservation appartenly has as much a credibility as the guy who shouted outloud - "i call 1st" as soon he saw the iphone announcement monday:confused:

ATT reps have said that there will be two lines in the ATT stores. Don't know how it will work for the Apple Stores.

Just got a call from an apple rep confirming my two iphone purchases. She did say she did say that it was unlikely that anyone would receive there iphones by the Friday the 19th...

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Versus iPhone

iPhone is a Mess! Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is lot cheaper and way way better, I am a mac user for decades, but heck, can't be blind, a year to update to copy and paste? and video recording, or even audio recording for that matter! People wake up, iPhone should be lot cheaper for what it offers!!!

Update on this...

I got the email last night saying it would be delivered on the 19th. I called this morning to double check. The rep told me that depending on when you placed your order, some would get it on the 19. Those customers got the email I got. Others would get it on the 22 if they did priority shipping.

Not sure what to believe here, but thats what she said.

I got the email as well. Seems unlikely to me that APPL would tell a bunch of people they were getting their phones on the 19th with a special email and *not* deliver.

Thank you for that insightful comparison. Guess I'll just cancel my order now.

I'm quite surprised by some of the negative comments about the extent of the upgrade - the following link gives you some indication of what they've changed to the processor architecture: http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3579

This will be a lot faster than the 3G and will I think lead to some splitting of the app store - developers will want to take full advantage of this. Compare this upgrade to what Palm users tend to get for their upgrades...it seems Apple users have got used to being spoilt.

I'm just happy that we will get it delivered on the 19th and not have to wait in line. I guess ordering right after the keynote pays off!

subsidy

Why doesn't att offer two subsidy plans, one for 1 year, for early adopters willing to go with their more expensive plans, and one for 2 years, the cheapo plan, both relatively close in price?
Wouldn't that keep loyal apple fans and everyone else happy?
