Why doesn't att offer two subsidy plans, one for 1 year, for early adopters willing to go with their more expensive plans, and one for 2 years, the cheapo plan, both relatively close in price?
Wouldn't that keep loyal apple fans and everyone else happy?

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but not on this forum. If you bought a 3G last year, then you still have at least 12 months left on your contract. At an absolute minimum of $60 / month, that's $720 that you are contractually bound to pay. That is more than the total cost of $699 for the highest phone and you get to drop the extra year.

My question to you would be, "why should AT&T give away 1/2 a contract that people signed up on last year to get a subsidized phone?"

I could see where AT&T could allow an upgrade with *adding* two additional years (now you have a 3 year contract), but then there'd be a bunch of complaints for the next two years.

I think what the OP was saying was that sure you finished 12mo, and have 12mo remaining, but give me 1/2 a subsidy and extend my contract another 12mo. Effectively this would give you 1.5 subsidies for 3yrs of total contract. Sounds reasonable to me. :)

Yeah. That does sound fair on both sides. I just see a lot of people who think their contract should just disappear.

I personally hope that we have two carriers to choose from this time next year. A little competition would do everyone some good.

I got the email as well. Seems unlikely to me that APPL would tell a bunch of people they were getting their phones on the 19th with a special email and *not* deliver.

hmmmmmmm well i didn't get any email(s)... i ordered in the evening on the 8th.... and as i stated earlier in this thread it says:

Ships: Delivers by June 19th

i did not select any upgraded shipping (as the lady on chat prior to me ordering said it would ship via fedex) and used my work addy.

if they aren't going to get it to me ON the 19th than i want to cancel the orders and just go to a store... i don't want to wait until next week

i'm not having a very good first iphone experience here....

editted to add:

if they are still advertising free delivery on the 19th

Pre-order now and get it June 19. Free shipping.

then they'd darned well better get me mine since i ordered monday!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Have a black 32 gb preordered, says it will deliver to my house on the 19th.

Also snagged mobile me since it was discounted with an iPhone purchase.

Because it should work both ways. If you continue on for longer than two years they don't reduce your monthly bill by the amount they subsidized on a monthly basis. In effect customers who don't upgrade but continue on after two years are giving *them* subsidies. If they did reduce your monthly bill at the end of two years, now there would be a really ethical and equal billing practice and that argument would have more merit.

Then don't sign the contract if you aren't happy with it

Otherwise known as profit. This is completely normal in any subscription-based business (e.g. telephone company). There is an initial investment required by the company to provide service to a new customer, and it takes some amount of time to pay that investment back and start becoming profit.

This probably has been covered already but I didn't have time to read through 900 posts ;-)
I have a family plan and ATT won't let me get a new phone until 3/10 but my wife is eligible so the guy from ATT told me to order the phone under her number and then bring in my old phone and the new one and they will swap out the sim cards. She will get my 3G and I will get the new iPhone.
If you have a family plan you should look into this.

Yeah but your subsidy is probably paid back within year one. Year two is probably when they start making profit. If they didn't start making any profit until after two years then they would have almost no profit because most people get a new phone after two years when they are eligible for an upgrade.

Yes, Apple is looking for a profit

As they should be

I love how everyone is crying over AT&T and Apple, look people all are crying and complaining is going to get us no where... This is what it is and there is nothing we can do about it.

Still terrible camera? Have you seen the camera or it's results? It's appears better than the camera on the previous iPhones (3.2MP vs 2MP), and comparable to other Smart Phone cameras on the market, can do video (versus none), and has auto-focus (versus none). The iPhone is not designed to replace a Nikon D5000. It is a Phone / Music Player / Gaming Device / Video Device / Digital Tape Recorder / etc. Can your Nikon play music? Can your Canon play a racing game? Can your Pentax make phone calls? And ... can it do it for $299-399? Come on people, stop complaining about the iPhone not replacing the Wii/Nikon/Sony/Mac/etc all in one shot for $99 bucks. If you don't like the update, don;t buy it!!

Thank you!!!!!! :D

am i good with the current 3G cases sold instores and online? i don't want to have to wait for a special 3GS case, i want to wrap this thing up when i get it right away..

also anyone have any suggestions for good, durable, low profile cases? screen protectors? any help is greatly appreciated. thank you

SwitchEasy CapsuleRebel and CapsuleNeo are great. I have a capsule rebel on my 3G and it protects it great. just picked up another for me and one for a friend's iphone 3G. good combo of hard protection from drops (i have "tested" this case too many times, but i'm glad it's on there!!) and gripping with both materials. i hated silicone cases that we touch to put in your pocket and would turn your pocket inside out trying to remove it. plus it would have lint on it. SwitchEasy's cases don't do this. it's the best of both worlds!!

Highly recommended, and no, i don't get anything out of this. just my honest opinion and review of the case. I like great products, like Macs, iPhones, and SwitchEasy cases!
