again, did anyone not see that the US store said:

AT&T service
(minimum two-year agreement)

And the UK store said:

Wireless service

Under the requirements bit, good news for the UK!

Something just occurred to me. Every year Apple has given away free iPods to college/university students in the summer to clear out old stock to make way for the new iPods released each fall. Assuming that the iPhone 3g is sold unlocked, perhaps they're giving away the iPod touch this year with the plan of replacing it completely with the iPhone.

The Touch pricing now makes Zero sense. Why would anyone spend $299 on a 8GB Touch when they could buy a $199 8GB iPhone, hack it to work without activation, and enjoy the GPS and camera?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. The back-2-school promotion will help a bit, though, otherwise people would be next to mad to buy one at $100 more.

Am I Dreaming

I seriously feel like this just did not really happen and I am still waiting for the keynote.

Glossy black, at first I like this, but then the rumors/leaked pics of the three colors in matte caught my attention.

No iChat camera or app. This was more important to me then GPS.

No 32Gb, I really need this for movies, etc.

Oh well, guess this is what happens when you get hyped on rumors. I will still buy as I made cash on ebay for gen 1, but come on Apple.

Looks like the case specks that were leaked were true, the speaker grill looks like crap, crap, and more crap.

EDIT: Guess there is still hope for a second model on July 11th with Aluminum Backing (apple can figure it out), Front camera, and a Higher res camera.

Stop making up words that don't exist. It's confusing and misleading. It doesn't state anywhere to "go to an actual store." Use some common sense. It would be daft for Apple to release the iPhone through retail stores only.

You can get iPhones online at the AT&T Wireless Store, pick the phone, then pick the plan

BTW, the AT&T Wireless Store is down....

Darn - I was hoping for an upgraded camera... the 2MP one just doesn't cut it.

I tried searching through the tech specs on Apple.com, but I see nothing on the type of 802.11 support they'll be providing. - I really want N.

Hmm as I read it, it doesn't have proper GPS - isn't A-GPS what e.g. Nokia phones have had for 2-3 years, meaning it can ONLY base your position on cell antennas - no satellite GPS reception? If it had real GPS I suspect Steve would have demonstrated that more thoroughly...

NEWSFLASH:

The store is back up, and the iPhone page says ONLY available at the Apple or AT&T Store.

This means you have to sign a contract BEFORE leaving the store...

absolutely not true. buy it, take it home. Activate it thru iTunes. (or not)

Don't Get Too Excited About SIM Ejector Tool

Sim ejector tool is listed as an in the box item, thats interesting, don't remember getting one with my first gen....maybe I missed it?

Received one of these high-tech tools with a replacement iPhone last summer.

Lack of features

I'm disappointed it does not have the front facing camera for iChat. :(

Upgrade to the current camera???
32 GB version?

I expected more. This was by far the most boring keynote I've sat through.
I guess we are spoiled with the iPhone and now except something great everytime Steve announces new products. Stock dropped $7...

Yes, the lack of MMS/video chatting/front camera and extra space is a huge risk that Apple is taking considering that other phones have these features. My guess: Marketing....they are holding these features back to make more money next year with iphone 3.0. :(

In the meantime, the iphone 2.0 does square up spec vs. spec vs. blackberry bold for enterprise users, is being offered to over 50 countries, and offers a better overall performance experience for all of us. I guess Apple is counting on that to get them through the next year...or at least 6 months...of iphone sales.

I know I'm in for an iphone 2.0 and so are a lot of others here....Apple's strategy just might work! Now, just to wait for July 11....

Look forward to future posts about Snow Leopard!

I like it but am very disappointed to see Apple revert back to plastic, anyone who has an old iPod will know how scratched TF they get and how everyone kicked off when they look knackered after a couple of months. My 1st gen iPhone still looks pristine, I guess its all about mass selling :(

The iPod Touch doesn't come with an expensive two year contract.

But the iPhone has always required an AT&T contract, but the touch has always been cheaper. Now the phone has even more features than the touch and is cheaper. Why wouldn't I just buy an iPhone now and not use the phone part, instead of spending $100 more on a touch?

VERY interesting as mentioned by a previous poster.... the US store states a 2-year contract w/ AT&T is required... the UK store just states "Wireless Service" and there's not a mention of 02 to be found... other than that they will sell the phone too...

unlocked UK phones? unpossible....

Not Thinner

Near as I can tell from all the published specs, it's 0.7mm thicker. Not that that matters much, but it doesn't appear to be thinner unless I'm reading things incorrectly.

well at least i wont have to buy one now. so all we gain is the new design, 3g and gps, everything else will be the same with the software 2.0 right? if thats the case as it seems it is, then i'll keep mine and wait until the next update. but i am looking forward to software 2.0 so that someone will have a voip wifi app that i can use without having to jailbreak.

iPhone $199, plus a 2 year AT&T contract, and probably a $200 early termination fee if you don't want the cell phone service.

Would consumers really think that far though? Getting an iPhone for $200 bucks is very easy to rationalize. Consumers are unlikely to add up those additional costs FUTURE costs when the iPhone is so easily within their grasp.

I would say, 'well why would I want to pay $100 more for a product that can do less?' [Such a phenomenon was present in the '90s when GM came out with its electric car - future savings/costs were not accounted for in purchase decisions.]

The question I think everyone is trying to ask is:

If I already have an iPhone, what's the upgrade path? Since the $199 is clearly a subsidized price, do I simply sign a new 2-year AT&T contract? Or pay $200 more if my original 2-year contract isn't up yet? Usually you have to wait until your original contract is up until you're allowed to get a phone subsidy. But since they didn't give a subsidy on the original iPhone purchase, maybe you get can one early.

I scoured the Apple site, and it says nothing about this. I hope current owners don't get shafted here and either have to wait until their contracts are up or have to pay another couple hundred dollars.
