It totally sucks I have to wait so long. My verizon phone s slowly dying... My question now is, is the battery replaceable? From the pics it looks like it might be like the old one un-accessible and the whole case has to come off. Hope it not soldered in.

Tried pre-ordering and you cant. sucks for all those people sitting outside the apple 5th ave. store.

Given that the iPhone is effectively CHEAPER than the iPod Touch, what's going to happen to the pricing of the iPod Touch? Will Apple update the iPod Touch as well this summer (before the end of the college discount campaign)? Are 2-year contracts part of the $199 deal; is there no way to buy the iPhone without the contract?

They're probably using the education discount to get rid of the Touches and introduce a new, cheaper one in September. Just like last year's nano.

Looks like that's changing with the new iPhone...

On what basis?

Activating via iTunes was a stroke of genious in terms of retail process management. It allowed Apple and AT&T to sell a phone and move on to the next customer and let the customer deal with the plan choices via their computer.

Nothing on the Apple site indicates that this is going away. It just lists the stores as the only location to buy. Leaving off "online" may be merely a typo or ignored because it is assumed rhetorical.

Seeing as developers pay big $$$ to go to the conference in the first place (most on company time), they don't need consumer fluff.
You know, Steve only devoted 17 minutes out of 2 hours on the iPhone 3G. I won't be disappointed if there are no new hardware features to be found in the new release by the time it goes on sale July 11th, but I won't be surprised if there are.

So guys what do you think i could get for an 8gb iphone (jailbroken)? Not really considering selling it until a 32gb model is available but I'm just curious.

Am I the only one somewhat skeptical of build quality with these new models??

I'm still not quite clear on this contract business. Even if they only allowed us to buy these in stores, can I go and activate through iTunes in the store even though I'm only 2 months into my AT&T contract?

For other phones, two prices are always listed, with renewal and without and those not eligible for renewals pay the higher price. But the iPhone as far as we know now only has one price so will they just tell me I can't buy any iPhone for another 16 months?

Plan costs?

ATT wasn't even mentioned today, which I found surprising. Yeah, half as cheap is nice, but if the plan jumps by $20 a month then you pay that back before you have the phone for even a year......what are the monthly plan cossssts...!?

JULY 11th??????

Is anyone as pissed about this as I am? I have been waiting for 3 months, anticipating this more than anything.

and now I have to wait another month??????

This is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get one. But come on, JULY 11TH?????????

Why not have pre-orders?

The reason why you can't buy it online now is because it's NOT AVAILABLE until the 11th of July... The online Apple Store is a store too.

Where to buy:
iPhone will be available in 8GB (black) and 16GB (black or white) models1 at Apple Retail Stores and AT&T Stores.

It doesn't say "Coming Soon" it says to go to an actual store...

They need you in person to sign the contract....

iPhone in Canada

Canada's Apple store now has the iPhone 3G.
And the response was so large ehMac's form has crashed:eek:

Looks like they made it smaller rather then upgrading to 32 gig. I am a bit disappointed. 32gig is kinda a deal breaker for me. =/

Before, you can just buy it online. The AT&T refurbs were sold online without activation as well.

Now, you HAVE TO GO TO A STORE. Plus, if available from AT&T online, you WILL HAVE TO GO through the activation process online.

These phones are SUBSIDIZED... no way $199 for a next generation iPhone without a subsidy.

********. You cannot honestly think that Apple would limit its reachable market by limiting buyers to physical stores. Nowhere on the Apple site does it say that they will be sold ONLY at Apple Retail Stores and AT&T Stores - just that it will be. You guys are freaking out about nothing.

I WOULDN'T TRUST THAT PHONE!!!

...I've seen Doctor Who. That corporate corridor and display room are curiously similar to Cybermen/Sontaran corporations. The iPhone 3G is an obvious cover for techno-death.

To get those savings, Apple had to cut some corners. I'm waiting to see what the screen quality is like. You may find that the old version is...

1. More scratch resistant

2. Better looking

3. Fare better screen.

All things that are not worth trading for GPS and 3G (which appears not to be that significant an improvement over Edge )

Geez how can the 3g screen look worse than the 1g, which is already a pretty poor screen contrast wise

I hope it is unlocked in the UK. I'm really nonplussed about all of the carriers, but I can do without the hassle of switching and trying to keep my number...

I wonder how much the contract will be?

Also, who really gives a toss about the 2MPx camera? If you wanna take photos, take a decent camera with you. The N95 camera is great for a phone camera, but I'd never take anything more than snapshots on it...

Suddenly, the $299 student discount for the iPod Touch doesn't look very meaningful anymore with an iPhone for $199. Granted you don't need a cell phone plan but still.

I wonder if there is going to be a Touch discount or redesign soon.
