If you have to use google maps for navigation, that means that you will have to be crazy or rich to use this when traveling out of your country.

Roaming charges for downloading maps over the air would be astronomical

there is a free navigation software available, called Nav*****, I previously installed it on my Sprint Mogul phone, it is great, but freezes Mogul which only has 64Meg of RAM. With Iphone larger RAM, it should be only a matter of time before Nav***** or some other software is available

New iPhone and 2 Year Contract for CURRENT iPhone Owners

I understand the subsidized pricing structure, and the need for a 2-year contract because of it... but what about current iPhone owners who want to sell their current phone for the new one?

Do we tack the 2 years on the end of our current contract?
Does the new 2 year contract start on the day that we get the new phone?

Locked! Land-Locked!?

So the iPhone is still locked although you pay the extra premium with your 2yr contract?
To swap your SIM is essential in central Europe, just to avoid the horrendous roaming fees while on travel! Together with the MOBILEme it would have been a perfect solution.
So if you don't want to screw with unlocking the iPhone is still not an option. UNFORTUNATELY! I'd love to get one.

And at the end of the day: anybody an idea what the locking is still useful for?
Is there a bigger BIG BROTHER plan, contolling all mobile date flow? Or just a bad business plan?

8gb - FREE - £99
16gb - FREE - £159

existing o2 iphone customers can upgrade as well, for the same prices as new customer, new 18 month contract

"If you signed a 2-year contract with AT&T when the iPhone came out (which you pretty much had to), you'll have to sign another new 2-year contract to score a new iPhone 3G. The good news is that AT&T will allow you to overwrite your old contract with your new contract. In other words, you're just locked into another 2 years, not 3."

Ok, sounds like everybody should be GO for upgrade! yay!

I wonder if AT&T will eventually provide for a fee their navigation service to get Garmin/TomTom-like navigation.

Given that the iPhone is effectively CHEAPER than the iPod Touch, what's going to happen to the pricing of the iPod Touch? Will Apple update the iPod Touch as well this summer (before the end of the college discount campaign)? Are 2-year contracts part of the $199 deal; is there no way to buy the iPhone without the contract?

Thus the back to school promo - I say the TOUCH implement the 3G for people who do not want a phone, and reduced prices.

With the onset of me.com, (as predicted, (pat pat pat on the back)), Jobs is catering to Windows users. This will generate a lot more $$$ plus the 3rd party software and as a result, Touch's will probably be 3G with a reduced priced, larger capacity, flash when the prices come down. Still, it is not worth buying right now with phone at a few hundred dollars. But imagine this, iPod touch with 3G and a $10.00 per month access fee. (optional) would probably sell pretty well.

What about people that just got another phone besides the iPhone. I assume all is well with my self and others correct? Just sign another contract saying 2 years from X date.

Sounds good to me.

Anyone know if the GPS can be hooked up to auto and have voice? Very unlike Apple to intro a product that is better than GPS (assisted is) and have to have the consumer/driver look at the phone. One would think maybe a better speaker system (speakerphone) or blue tooth AUDIO directions. Has to be.

Right?
:)

I'm very disappointed that they didn't upgrade the camera. The reasons I didn't buy the 1st Gen iPhone was mainly due to the lack of 3G (I'm from the UK) and because of the 2 mp camera which was way below the current standards at the time! I ended up buying an N95.

I'm really happy its 3G now. I'll consider buying it once 'o2' make it available. Lets see what sort of contracts we're offered this side of the pond.

They're still are a few other niggly things e.g. no video calling or MMS, but then, the US doesn't exactly text message like we do.

That's what I would figure.

I just got a Blackjack-II in november (waiting for the 3g iphone to come out)...so if apple wants my $$$, they sure better let me replace my contract ;)

Hum - will you still be able to activate old iPhones via iTunes? I have an iPhone with no service (had service but canceled after paying ETF). I plan on reactivating it next January via iTunes after my Sprint account can be canceled. Will I still be able to reactivate it via iTunes or will that option be gone?

It'll still require a new contract.

The "take it home and do it on iTunes" is gone. They got smart!

so if i'm in australia buying an iphone on apple online, do you really think apple will implement a system for me to enter my details into their site? its nothing to do with them, its vodafone/optus' problem.

likewise if i walk into regent street apple store, no way are they gonna waste time getting me to fill in a form there and then. The whole point of the iphone is that you can get in an out of the shop quickly!

whatever happens, unlocked ones will appear on ebay.

NEWSFLASH:

The store is back up, and the iPhone page says ONLY available at the Apple or AT&T Store.

This means you have to sign a contract BEFORE leaving the store...

if you remember from last year. ATT doesn't set up the contract. You do it through Itunes. You just buy the phone at ATT or APPLE.

So............the new 3G isn't cheaper after all? Nice job of Jobs to not mention the increase in the monthly fee for the iPhone. So over the required 2 year contract, the phone works out to the same exact price as the iPhone 1. Too bad, the had a great show but this just crushes everything. Sad.

I guess that won't happen.

See ya. Have fun with your Black Jack.

So let me get this straight:

a) I cant record a video (i did this with a motorola razor 3 years ago.)
b) I cant send or recieve any pictures to/from any of my friends phones?

If so, which is unbelievable.... how difficult would it be for someone to develop an app that would allow both of these functions? I need a phone, but lacking both of those options really ****ing kills me.

c) Does anyone know for sure whether or not gps will cost extra, ive been holding out on a garmin because of this feature.

d) if data transfer is unlimited, can´t i just send and recieve my texts to my x@att.com and recieve and send them as emails to save money by not having to buy more than 200 sms msgs a month?
