I am very happy, not only are we looking at a much better product with some of the features that I bitched about back in October when I put down the money to take my iPhone home because despite lacking 3G and GPS it was still an amazing phone, we are looking at a more affordable product.

While money is somewhat tight right now (just bought a new car and moved out of my parents house and still finishing school) I probably won't have $200 to spend next month for the iPhone 2, but hopefully by October or November I will be able to get one.

- Turn by turn navigation? Doesn't seem like it, still Google Maps? I hope someone will write a turn-by-turn nav system

- Any word on upgrading? I assume it restarts the two year contract with AT&T, but do you use your existing SIM card, etc? What are the details if you have the original iPhone.

- A higher capacity model would have been nice, but 3G + GPS is basically what I wanted.

If this is true my guess is that the price cut is a veiled subsidy.

Cleaner than the way most phone subsidies work, in which the advertising looks like they are selling a used car.

It is stated on the iphone homepage that the price show "Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately." So im assuming no matter bought online or in the stores they will make sure you have a 2 year contract.

It freaking sucks to be in a 2 yrs contract with T-Mobile now. I can't switch out =\.. guess I'll wait until August and buy one off eBay!

Didn't read all the posts, but someone please tell me the new iPhone FINALLY can/has:

1.) Send Photo messages
2.) View photo messages
3.) Voice activated dialing
4.) Video Camera

If these are not in 2.0, there will be a LOT of people holding out for v. 3.0.

Not as exciting as we all hoped. It's even reflected in AAPL's close down 2%. Lots of snippy responses in the forum too probably another sign of disappointment. I guess one step at a time. Apple actually accomplished a lot in a short period of time -- apparent hardware improvements and the developer's framework.

At the reduced price, I'm ready to buy one even though it's still lacking otherwise common and what should be considered standard features.

A 32 GB version would have been nice. Yes most of us don't listen to most of our music most of the time but it's nice to have our entire music library always available with free space for other stuff. And the lack of video is VERY disappointing to me. I wonder if that can eventually be fixed with software.

This WWC was as boring as watching paint dry. I almost fell asleep watching the demos, time to get some lunch and hope that this afternoon brings something special. I'm very disappointed that we didn't get any instant gratification. Nothing available until next month. Sure, the 2.0 software has many interesting possibilities, and we all knew about MobileMe, but there is nothing revolutionary about the new iphone, no front camera, no video ichat, no specs, hell, not even a real iphone 2.0 to look at.....

Maybe, but you had to know that was coming. Intel still not there with 4 core chips which will result in core MBP and 16/ maybe 32 Mac Pro's - that said....

Apple (as predicted by a few (grin)), has turned into a consumer company which SOMEDAY, while frustrating for now, will benefit the PRO users.

Presently, the bread and butter has been iPhones/iPods and iMacs..... with the Pro suffering (no matte for iMac, no GPU for mini or Macbook) with 2 hour logic/final cut lessons, far and few....

Down the road though, I think the extra financial gain equates into APPLE R&D and will allow them to focus on the PRO app's pretty soon and high end machines. Even I was spewing that Apple doesn't care, in hindsight, Apple is positioning itself to become #1, then, I think we are going to see machines that are mind boggling as well as software that is second to none.

One year from today, our systems will be at least, 2, 3, maybe 4 times faster at the same price point.

So im assuming no matter bought online or in the stores they will make sure you have a 2 year contract.

I don't think you can buy them online at the Apple Store anymore ... At least it doesn't appear to be that way anymore.

Google Maps GPS means...

If you have to use google maps for navigation, that means that you will have to be crazy or rich to use this when traveling out of your country.

Roaming charges for downloading maps over the air would be astronomical

UK pricing

8gb - FREE - £99
16gb - FREE - £159

includes more btopenzones as well

existing o2 iphone customers can upgrade as well, for the same prices as new customer, new 18 month contract

Q: Why not front-side camera? And same megapixel?
A: How would you take photos w/ the iPhone unless the camera had a swivel? If that was the case, they would have to redesign the phone.

The front side camera is supposed to be *in addition* to the rear camera. It's for 3G video calls, exactly the same as hundreds of other handsets.

Q: Why not video-conferencing? Ghetto gps software? Copy & paste? etc.
A: Apple-store, but also certain aspects of the phone could be improved.[/QUOITE]

Many of these things can't be done on the SDK by other people. Copy and paste certainly can't.

All these things come down to cost cost cost. Seriously, how many non-Apple fanatics would actually buy the new iPhone had it been $400-$500 w/ a 3 megapixel camera and better software?

Sorry, but that's nonsense. 2 megapixel CMOS sensors are so old now that they actually cost about the same as 3 megapixel ones due to economy of scale, and even going to five megapixel would add a few cents to production costs.

There's plenty of software effort going on things much less essential than copy and paste.

Keep in mind that cost & appealing to the masses is their PRIMARY goal. With full Exchange support and 3G, it fits the bill!

Exchange support will sell a lot fewer of these to the masses than a proper camera would.

Phazer

so if you're under contract with AT&T, you can still get it for 199 or 299 and just reup on the 2 year?

That's what I really want to know.

I really don't want to pay $599 for a 16GB 3G iPhone AND pay an extra 10 on the data rate.

AT&T and apple need to come out w/ the details asap.

so no front camera?
no word on cut and paste?
no AD2P?
no bluetooth thetering?
at least it's half price
hope it's jailbroken on the 12th so i can get one before vacations

you mean, No A2DP, this was a NO BRAINER! Common Apple! you could've sold an A2DP with nice 10hr battery life (even ability to USB charge directly) as another accessory = Caching $$$!

Copy & PASTE?! Dear heavens thats as said as the Motorola Q9h and other WM Smartphone Edition phones that Natively the OS doesn't support. Really sad. I'd understand an Exchange Admin restricting this but natively it should support this.

Bluetooth PAN/DUN for tethering, heck why not OBEX while we're at it for tethering.?! Maybe Apple has a way for Ad-Hoc type of tethering using WiFi?! Hmm this mind is inquiring.

Hey did ANYONE notice that the " Network OTA download =/< 10MB < WiFi" should've read " Network OTA download =/< 10MB > WiFi" ?!?!
