To those who are saying there wont be video recording or mms messaging because it was not announced in the 2.0 software... think about this...

The new 3G iPhone will ship with the new software already installed on it (we would think), so who is to say there won't be some features exclusive to those previously installed 3G iPhones?

I mean features like that (exclusive to the 3G iPhone) would be even MORE incentive for people to go out and buy one.

What if you have another phone and all you want to o is switch? Do you have to get another SIM card? What if I just use the 1st gen iPhone?

does any body think that the new design looks lame?

even when steve introduced the iphone 3g at the keynote and showed the pics people started to laugh at it lol and no one was clapping

I don't really care why they lowered the cost. I'm not happy with the cheaper materials. Obviously when you use cheaper materials the cost of the product can be lowered. I'm not saying this is why the cost is lower but it is usually a contributing factor to a cost reduction.
The cost of the 3G iPhone isn't necessarily lower. AT&T is most likely still paying Apple the same amount per iPhone, possibly even more because of the new features. It's just cheaper for us, the consumers, because AT&T's subsidizing it.

arguing you need a better camera on a phone is a little ridiculous. The only thing that they could have added would have been a flash. More megapixels does NOT mean the camera is better. In fact more megapixels on the same size sensor just means more noise and poorer quality images that also take up more space on your phone.

I know.

That is why they need a CCD like my SHARP 903SH, as I said. I know full well of the "megapixel myth" and am only saying that the CMOS in the iPhone is rubbish.

In the box:

iPhone 3G
Stereo Headset with mic
Dock Connector to USB Cable
USB Power Adapter
Documentation
Cleaning/polishing cloth
SIM ejector tool

so it does not come with a dock..
we would you need a sim ejector?? somthing is wrong here..

the 3g iphone is fater then the original

iPhone 2.0 will be launched, and also be identical, for both 2G and 3G phones. There are no secrets hidden in the code like MMS, video, etc. It is what it is. Plenty reviews on the features that await inside, as you can run this code on your iphone right now if you install the SDK.

You will probably get a third party video app at least. There are some unofficial apps that have been around for 6 months now that record perfectly normal video using the hardware mpeg 4 encoder on board. Hopefully someone will make my video editor/youtube uploader at least. MMS is not possible without at&t's help -- infact -- at&t initially had MMS zero-rated for iphone accounts, until realizing people were using an unofficial app to send and receive zero rated MMS's, and plugging the "hole" later on. Now iphone subscribers are blocked on the mmsc from doing any message send/receive -- even at the highest casual tariff.

Apple is going after where the money is: supporting enterprise. A lot of organizations (interestingly enough, from the top talking down to the bottom) want iphone support -- assuming that it could meet the host of requirements needed to make it remotely SOX complaint and compete against blackberry. Otherwise, they arent going to touch it if they cant manage them all at a click of a button or remote wipe.

The following does not equal money for the business nor will it sell any more handsets:

- new bluetooth features
- mms
- video
- higher end cameras or a plurality of cameras
- laser pointer
- red/blue glasses support
- voice dialing (and since no background apps can be ran, you wont get this third party)

Apple knows this... i know this too. Apple knows that im a consumer whore, and will by the thing anyway. The iphone will finally be accepted by enterprise, and a ton of sales will be realized from that.

If you, or everyone on this thread complaining combined did not buy the 3G iphone, it wouldn't make squat difference in the volume of sales apple will realize from just popping in a 3G chip and GPS. Given the price and the user experience, nothing is going to beat it next month.

I just hope its not apple's game plan for the next 12 months...otherwise..they will be quite surprised by watching their market blow away in the wind.

I also hope that iPhone 2.1 brings us some geewiz software updates, as a lot of deficiencies can still be fixed without new hardware...but please apple..this is just like a pile of parts in a garage that could make the coolest car in the world...but nobody really cares about assembling it...

I don't think this was because of the design. I think this was because he showed it on it's side. And people didn't expect that. I assume they expected a front view. Who knows... But I don't think people were talking **** already for a 2 second side view.

Overall - Good WWDC. Not great.

Mobile Me - looks cool, I'll buy

SDK - I hope they allow laptop tethering as an app. I'll buy Super Monkey Ball. Looks cool.

3G iPhone - I don't care so much about price. I'm bummed about lack of 32 GB version and higher res camera. Is 32 or a 64 overkill...? Sure, but it would be nice and it would ensure I wouldn't want to upgrade again for awhile. I won't be so quick to upgrade until after I check out iPhone 2.0 software. But I'm sure Stevie will get my money.

Last thing: Wouldn't it be cool if you could swap in a higher capacity battery, throw on a different back and then have a slightly thicker phone... you know - because of the full plastic back.

A 32GB version probably has more to do with real estate than anything else. Apple has always showed us that if they can upsell you on, say, a $1000 64GB hard drive, they most certainly will.

Im sure they'd love to sell you a 32GB for $499. And people would buy them. I have 5GB of music, so 8 is fine by me :p

Everything I wanted, except more storage. I'm guessing we'd have to wait until after Christmas for a Flash update, so 16GB is what we've got. Maybe I'll see what I can fit in 16GB on my iPod. If it's reasonable, and I can get past the higher monthly rates from AT&T, maybe I'll take the plunge.

So, I read the first couple pages of the thread, skipped the 300 or so pages in between, then read the last couple, so apologies if I'm repeating.
on the apple store, GPS is written as A-GPS or assisted-GPS.

what is this exactly?
Assisted GPS uses a network connection (such as the 3G connection) to get information from a central server which makes it easier for the GPS to find the satellites. Generally this helps the GPS acquire more quickly, and it can also help the GPS position from weaker signals (such as when indoors).

What it also means is that the GPS may only work when subscribed to AT&T since they're probably the ones running the servers.
Why would they change from aluminum to plastic?
There's up to 4 antennas in that thing-- Cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS. Every one of those needs to see the outside world, and metal is going to wreak havoc. Putting metal anywhere around an antenna changes the antenna's behavior.
Hmm,

New ipod classic released. What? can't plug into my existing ipod radio or use the headphone jack for video? NOT.

.....umm, hello where is the new mac mini? cricket.. cricket... cricket...

New mac pro released. WHAT? Same design? NOT.

So how does Apple win with you? If they don't change the design, you get mad. If they do change the design, you get mad.

I'm with you on the mini. cricket... cricket...
I know.

There's no significant difference between CCD and CMOS sensors at that level. CMOS started behind, but they're pretty much at parity now, at least for sensors at that size and cost.

For the people who are complaining about the camera pixel count, let me point out that your 1080p HDTV is 2 megapixels. I know we all want different things from our phones, but I submit that if you want to make prints bigger than your television, you might be better off buying a specialized photographic device.

Yeah, I think you're right. I think it's always been one chip in the iPhone, two in the Touch. Each time Samsung doubles their capacity (which has been happening about once a year, amazingly) we get an update.

It does put me in a bit of a bind though... I've got about 34GB of music, and paring down to under 32GB to leave room for photos and movies and games and apps and whatnot would be acceptable, but I think paring down to 16 will be painful.

I second that... I'm disappointed that it isn't 32 Gig... Doesn't the iPod Touch come in a 32 Gig version? I've been waiting for more memory to buy this... might have to keep waiting!

I recall that the iPod Touch has 32 Gigs based on it having 2x16 gig flash chips. It may be an issue of space that they are not able to put that many flash chips into the 2G iPhone.

No UPGRADE in Current Camera mpx

Are you one of those people who think that "The more megapixels the camera has, the better pictures it will take!"? The quicker we get rid of this megapixels-madness, the better of we will be.

I expected a video conference camera and a better quality main camera just like the rest of us, just because they would be cool. But they're definitely not deal breakers.

What almost made this still not it for me was the fact they didn't break out a 32GB, and it's almost certain they will by Christmas. But hell, I've waited this long. I'll get one. If you wait for the next thing every time, you'll never have it. 3G and additional languages were my main issues, and they're solved. And I'm grandfathered into MobileMe too. Might as well take advantage.

Not sure if this has been addressed, but has anything been made of the rumors of an extra front sensor that led to the other rumors about a video conference camera? I know the second camera isn't there. But were those extra sensor rumors just fake (and in that case what about all the third party case designs that seemed to accommodate it?) or is there another sensor there, it just doesn't happen to be a camera?

Are you one of those people who tries to make fun of someone by taking one specific aspect of what they said and jump on it when their point was generally accurate?

I would've been more than happy with a 32GB version of this iPhone. It has everything I need except that. I already have to compromise with my iPod Touch by leaving some of my music collection behind as it recently broke 16GB line.

Now I just need to figure out if I should wait for a 32GB version or just dive in...

Aside from the hardware advancements I hope they add the basics of the software soon as well, such as copy/paste, bluetooth profiles and alike.

phew i was worried i was going to have to wait in line at the apple store then jump on a plane to vegas for ufc weekend. luckily the ufc event is the weekend before. we'll call it a pre-iphone party weekend.

Yay! My wife's given me the green light to get one of these when it comes out...

Hopefully they will keep the price under control in NZ. Apple have a tendency to charge significantly more here than the US (just like they do in the UK).

A cool thing for me is that since it's a global July 11 release, we'll be the first in the world to get them... :p

Apple might also be getting rid of their smaller flash sticks. There will be a 32GB model for Christmas.

bluetooth for iPhone, iPod

Why haven't they allowed a bluetooth headset for the phone and iPod combo. Seems Simple enough and much needed.

Hahah!

Yes, I noticed that too. People laughed when they saw the "spectacular new 3g iPhone" cos from the front it looks the same!!! They thought he was taking the mickey like at MW07' with the giant white mock-iphone!

There were some mockups going around 2 or 3 days ago of a phone with a strange looking dude called Carlos Rodriguez doing a Video call... now THAT phone looked realistic, highly featured etc.

Would rather the iPhone have stayed top of the line... I don't want to be a classic moaner, but wheres the $499-$599 iPhone Pro with 32Gb, 5MP camera, Front Camera, a little slimmer, fractionally longer, etc etc.

The features that this new iPhone have were expected when it was announced last year, and are borderline average now. The iPhone should not be "the people's phone".
