The features that this new iPhone have were expected when it was announced last year, and are borderline average now. The iPhone should not be "the people's phone".

3G phones featuring GPS are still not the 'norm'. Yes, there are plenty of phones with these features - especially 3G. But when you look at the capacity of the entry level iPhone - 8Gb - and its software features, it's really more than "borderline average".

Take the Nokia N95 8Gb for example. You can buy it in NZ from Parallel Imported for $1069, and it features 3G, GPS, 8Gb capacity, and a 5MP camera. The same features as the 3G iPhone, but with a better camera. It's also very chunky.

When the 3G iPhone comes out, it could be NZ$300, or NZ$400 at the most. Are you prepared to pay an extra $600-$700 for the 5 megapixel camera?

I'm not.

yeah how can plastic be better then aloy?? yes thats why the 3g is only $200..

shame apple wont make any more 1g iphones.

I'm watching TV One news at the moment, and they're about to say how much it'll be... I'll update you once I know (since Apple NZ is just Apple Australia in disguise, it should be similar).

Please deliver the goods and I will kiss your toes or something to that effect!!!!:p

I was kinda hoping for a few more options on the phone.

ie video conferencing and more.

also, why such a large amount of time between announcement and product launch? pretty lame if you ask me.

No price yet though. I'm going to bet it's at least £300.

I'm not sure that a price tag of £300 would be a problem. Go back to when iPhone was released in the USA. What price were people paying for them to get sent over to the UK? I paid £280 for my one last year.

It looks like the USA are sticking with the contract only option. This could lead to a huge demand for UK iPhone 3G in the USA and other countries that remain contract only.

I am keen to see what measures will be in place to prevent that. I don't think that there is any doubt that Zibri will be able to free the iPhone 3G.

Carphone Warehouse now have pricing details for the contract options.

Tariffs are..

£30 - 8GB = £99, 16GB = £159 (75mins, 125 texts)
£35 - 8GB = £99, 16GB = £159 (600mins, 500 texts)
£45 - 8GB = £00, 16GB = £59 (1200mins, 500 texts)
£75 - 8GB = £00, 16GB = £00 (3000mins, 500 texts)

Pay as you Go

Now we know that the iPhone is coming to O2 pay as you go does anyone think that the V.2 software will 'unlock' the 2G iphone so that an O2 pay as you go sim can be put in it? I hope so, it means my little brother can have my cast off 2G iPhone while I get the free upgrade to the 3G one.

nice:)

Maybe. I guess if it's really pricey then it's going to kind of defeat the point of PAYG if you then bear in mind that you're almost certainly going to have to pay a £7.50 bolt on for unlimited data unless you want your minutes eaten alive! :D

Price

I find it funny that some people here are moaning about the low price because it means everyone will have one!

Firstly, if the price had stayed as iPhone V1 when it came out everyone would have kicked off, now that Apple has made it cheaper, your still not happy!

Secondly, the 10 Million by the end of the year. The price drop means they will make this mark. In the end it is a company, with shareholders. If Apple sells that many iPhones its gives them the profit to put back into ALL your other nice and shiny Apple toys you want/need. If they dont sell equipment, they go bust. Then who will you go to for your sometimes expensive, but ultimately well thought out toy.....windows???!!

Answered my own question. On O2 iPhone site it says if you want your old iPhone to go to a good home or a family member or friend they can get their new iPhone PASYG sim card to put in it. Cool.

I've never in my life sent or received an MMS, nor wanted to. In fact, I don't know a single person who (to my knowledge) has ever sent or received an MMS. It amazes me that people consider this a significant feature.

Think this must be a non-US thing, everyone I know, and me, send several a day...

But what amazes me far more is the gripping about the camera. Do you honestly think any of those cameras in phones are good cameras? I don't care how many megapixels they have - they can't take pictures anywhere near the quality of even point and click digital cameras. All camera phones are good for is taking a quick shot when you don't have a real camera available, and the iphone does a good job of that.

As another poster said, have you used the Nokia N95's camera – more options and features than my Fuji has, far better picture output by far...

But what amazes me even MORE is the whining about a front facing camera. Why on earth would I want that? I cannot envision any conceivable scenario in which that would be a useful feature. You're going to video chat on your cell phone? Seriously?

Yes, its been about on Nokia's since mid 2004 IIRC, its very usable and considering Apple push this technology the iMacs, MacBooks and everything now it would appear, having a model with it missing seems -odd-.

It would appear that you personally, dont fit the moule of these features, but IMHO, its slap, bang in the middle of Apple's focus customer base for the iPhone, so why they aint there puzzles me...

MMS is popular in the UK. It's not something I use a lot, but I do find it useful, and I'd be embarrassed to tell someone that my iPhone couldn't receive an MMS that they sent on their cheap Tesco phone.

It's all very well saying you can email a photo, but you can't to people who don't have that facility on their phone (ie most people). Still, if the iPhone really takes off now, maybe it will be less of a problem when we've all got one :)
