No thanks

Ok. I am happy with Jailbreak.
Some of my friends have iPTs. Some of them live overseas. I don't see the upgrade listed in the iPT page in their countries. I don't see a way they COULD upgrade if they wanted to.
I am not paying a single cent for that upgrade.
I considered myself a mac zealot for a long time. Today, I am ASHAMED!

Apple, NO THANKS, <expletives>

.Apple is practically begging us to jailbreak our iPods now.

Not me. I think that while a few (thousand) folks will go the jailbreak route, most of us are happy to have such a nifty device that just works. Maybe I'm a weenie, but doing stuff to an expensive toy under warranty makes me nervous. I am perfectly willing to pay a bit to get some nice upgrades that the ipod touch did not have when I bought it... I mean, when Santa brought it. Heck, I'm still tickled that I did not have to hop in bed with AT&T!

This is an empirical hypothesis, and I think it is false. It'll take a larger sample size to know for sure, but many people i know who bought the iPhone and iPodTouch didn't buy them "for the features that were present." They, or I should say "we", were buying these products for the potential. And again, Jobs fueled out expectations. The iPod Touch and iPhone are not like regular pieces of hardware; here the future was more open than ever before. I do worry that the post-SDK 3rd party apps will require this $20 pack...but hopefully it'll just require the free 1.1.3 update.

true i didnt buy the ipt for the fact i could listen to music and movies soley. i bought because of what it COULD do

For those having problems, you need to update iTunes as well as the iPod's firmware.

I paid my 24.99 AUD for the upgrade, but i managed to get the iTunes gift card for 40% off when I bought my16GB iPod touch for 10% below RRP in December, so effectively I'm still ahead 499 + 17 = win.

I setup my mail, stocks, weather, changed my icons around the home screen and I can't be happier! If you've been waiting to start using your ipod Touch as a PDA replacement, here is is folks. (even aussie stocks work with the stock widget, and so do aussie cities) .

For people annoyed at the $20, go ahead and jail break your iPod, for those who see this as a good upgrade, it's worth the cash.

OMG! The Whining, the Whining!

I can't believe what I'm reading...fergawdsakes, it's only $20 and half of you are probably sitting in a Starbucks sucking down over-priced coffee. You just blew more that $20 of your whiny life complaining about it.

I once spent $2500 on a new 128K Mac and was dang happy about what I got. Blank disks were a buck apiece and only held 400K. There wasn't even a port on the Mac to hook up a hard drive.

Twenty bucks! Sheesh!

SandynJosh: If you've followed the posts, you'd realize that we're objecting on principle. And also because we're procrastinating from doing any work. Or is this just me?

Very off-topic, but, dude - that's your son you're talking about. If he's spoilt, it's because someone spoiled him... My one year old doesn't behave like that, and neither does my three year old.

Okay. Back to apple.

There. You missed the point. I compared these whiners to the kid for there childish behaviour. Why so much fuss bout 20 bucks. These apps are not compulsary for every iPT owner. No one is forced to pay. Still people are going crazy. I dont see any logic here. Any body arguing here at MR that he/she has to pay 20$ extra for what could have been free if he bought it a week later is STUPID. Didnt you know there was a Stevenote due in a week. Didnt you expect product updates. Why didnt you wait even though you knew about all this? May be coz when you paid for it you found the product worth your hard earned money. Now what happened. Did Apple remove any software/functionality from your iPT? If anything, they added.

And in any case, a lot of posters are telling that people who bought iPT after a certain date will get the apps for free. And still people are whining. Thats really childish. Those who dont justify the price please dont pay. If you think apple is overcharging then dont buy.

If Apple was really out to screw everyone, they'd charge for every *new* feature added. They don't in some cases because they are not required to. In this case, I'm fairly certain that regulatory requirements compel them to charge something and it has to be appropriate for what is being added (i.e. it can't be just $2, like the 802.11n update, because it adds more functionality). We need someone to quote the actual requirement from the law to finally put this one to rest.

Regulatory requirements mean you can't supply free software if you want to? How is this different from new Macs coming with the latest version of iLife, but owners of older Macs don't get the upgrade for free?

iPod Touch Update Problems Solved

I had the same problem as hundreds of other people this is how to fix it.

I'm not sure why the update fails but my guess is:

1. Not enough disk space (I have a full 16 Gig but after a restore with only 8 Gig of tracks it worked)
2. Back ups of old iPods some how cause the update not to work (when asked if you want to restore a back up say NO)

All should be fine.

I would have bought an iPod Touch today when I was at Costco if I could go home with it and update it for free but I can't. This would have been a complete impulse buy and I'm unlikely to want to purchase any time soon because I'm not going to know if I am getting an old box or a new box. Apple screwed up big time on this one. They couldn't just fix their original mistake of leaving these applications off, they have to try and screw people on round 2.

It'll take a larger sample size to know for sure, but many people i know who bought the iPhone and iPodTouch didn't buy them "for the features that were present." Maybe this is just me, but if someone buys ANY product based on what it MIGHT be able to do, not what it CAN do at the time of purchase, that person is foolish.

Now we pay for Safari updates?

I don't really care about the extra apps but loved the idea of web clips but this is not included in the free update today.

I have to pay for an update to Safari, an application that is updated for free on every other platform, INCLUDING WINDOWS VISTA.

That is irritating.

registered to macrumors just to post this comment...

I find it most irritating that this new iPod touch update is sold $20. I bought myself a 16GB one for Christmas and now, just 3 weeks later, I have to pay extra to get what comes included for free from now on? It's not even cutting edge since the iPhone has had it from the very start. What next, a $20 update every month?

I am divided in between my admiration for Apple's quality products and there plain greed. I have also bought myself a new MacBook late November 2007 (my very first Apple). Up until now I was raving on to who would listen how much Apple products are so much better then Microsoft. I certainly will refrain from now on.

I think that this update it's hilarious. I'm supposed to pay 20bucks for NOTHING after i've paid near 400€: everyone buys technology 'cause of what the device is going to be, not what it is. When you buy a car, you buy the final version, and when you buy this gadgets you're buying 1.0.0, with updates, bugfixes etc.
Or you buy the final version car, or you buy the expensive-as-final-version-car but with free updates. Payin' 400€ plus updates makes me feel scamed.

I don't really need those apps, but they're not worth 20$, not even 5$.

Maybe this is just me, but if someone buys ANY product based on what it MIGHT be able to do, not what it CAN do at the time of purchase, that person is foolish.

I disagree. It is perfectly rational to buy a product for what it might be able to do, given sufficient reason to believe that it is likely that it will perform as expected in the near future. We buy meat, not to eat raw, but because we know we can make lasagna. (OK, this is a silly example, but you get the picture.) And I've argued earlier that I think we've been given reason to believe that the iPod Touch was going to be a great thing. Sure, Steve Jobs never explicitly said, "Listen guys, there's gonna be lots of cool free apps for the Touch soon!", but watching keynotes and press releases in the near past, who could be blamed for believing thus? To be honest, I didn't expect it (hte cool apps) to come from Apple. I thought Apple was going to release the SDK, and we'd either download freeware, donationaware, shareware, or commercial apps off the cloud. Instead, Apple pulled this stunt.

By the way: Jailbreaking is totally safe. And Restoring it brings it back to full warranty goodness.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Apple is so seriously retarded at the moment. We can get so much more via jail-breaking, so what do they do? They charge us - that'll deter us from jail-breaking!

OK WoW. I just read the WFT. Yes, people have a right to get pissed off about $20. I'm amazed at how many people are pissed off that people are pissed off about $20. (Honestly, MYOB. I'm tired of people getting outraged on the internet about EVERYTHING.)

At this point, I'm not excited about the $20 charge and I don't plan on paying it right now. I'm going to give Apple feedback on the URL listed above and wait and see what happens. Why?

Yes, I asked for an iPod Touch for Christmas knowing what features it had. Yes, I expected more features to be added for free. I think the iPod Touch didn't have Mail, Stocks, Weather, Maps, and Notes so that the iPhone would have differentiating features and be more appealing. Now Apple is ready to push the iPod touch harder and is increasing the feature set. As early adopters we bought early. Our (my) complaint is that Apple is now saying thanks for early adopting, pay for features everyone else is getting at the same price.

Guess what? I use Google for most of these features. Gmail for all my email accounts, Google Maps for directions, and iGoogle has my weather and stocks ready for me. Google has a great webpage that I can use whenever I have wifi. I expect Google will release their own iPod Touch apps when the SDK is available. Simply put, these apps aren't worth $20 to me.

SDK apps: Apple is going to control the app installation process. You aren't going to pay to be able to install apps, you're going to pay for apps in iTunes. And Apple will expect to make a little $ for each transaction, though the authors will make something also.

Personally I wonder if this is Apple testing the waters of selling applications. They get to figure out the bugs before releasing the SDK and charging people for third party apps and see what price the market will bare. I'm saying that I won't bare this price for this feature set right now. Its pretty simple for me.

EDIT: I just looked up the new dock that everyone is complaining about. Wow - ugly indeed. I think I'll stick with my current firmware version for now also. My iPod Touch is working great for me - no need to fix what isn't broken until Apple works all of the creases out.

I'm in the boat with the people who are objecting due to the principle of the situation.

It's not that we really care about the $20, hell, there's probably $20 worth of change in the jar on my bookshelf that I'll never touch.

It's that, once again, like the 802.11n airport extreme shenanigans, Apple is charging early adopters for something new customers will get for free. Are they really that desperate for an extra buck here and there?

Maybe I'm just biased, afterall, I was one of the people Apple slapped in the face for buying a last-gen iMac G5 three months before they moved everything to intel. :D

Yeah! I'm With you on this!!

Yeah, I'm totally with you on this! I bought a minivan just before the new models came out and the new ones offer a tire-pressure sensor. Those greedy cheapskates at Chrysler expect me to buy an after market kit for my van when everyone that buys that same van now gets it for free!

No more mister nice-guy here... I'm not gonna tell a sole how much I love my van. Like you, I certainly will refrain from now on.

hopefully it'll just require the free 1.1.3 update.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. I just installed it on my Touch (at a whopping 165.5mb) Nothing much new, as far as I can see. The icons inexplicably are re-arranged. The new positions don't seem any better than the old positions. The wimpy calendar alarm wasn't fixed. Something must have been fixed with that huge an update, but I haven't a clue what it was.

Big disappointment. :(

I don't understand why people are complaining that people are complaining about Apple. Power to the consumers, I say. We keep making polite noises about how Apple isn't wrong, how Apple has rights, how Apple's just like Chrysler, and how none of this is bad and evil, and we should just live with it. But why should we? With the iPhone, everyone raves about how Apple has wrestled the power from the telecommunications companies to the manufacturers. Some claim that some rights have also fallen unto the laps of the consumers. Well, not enough. The ideal solution, I think, would be for all iPod Touch users to object, to refrain from paying, and to demand - loud and clear - for free SDKs. But it's not going to happen. I know enough social psychology to not get my hopes up.

A Product with enhanced future abilities

Maybe this is just me, but if someone buys ANY product based on what it MIGHT be able to do, not what it CAN do at the time of purchase, that person is foolish.

If this were the case, no one should ever buy any computer (the iPod Touch is essentially a small computer) or any other piece of technology since most of these require some investment in software and training to be truly useful. In the case of the iPod, you need to add your own music, photos, videos, and other personal information to it. At the time of purchase, it is unlikely to have anything you want already on it.

In the case of the newly added applications, each user must decide if it is worth $20 to have Mail, Maps, Notes, Stocks, Weather, etc. available in the palm of their hands. If not, keep your money.

When I decided to spend a Christmas Apple Gift Card for an iPod Touch, I selected it not only for its current capabilities, but also because it was obvious to me that there would be future enhancements to the product. That I would have to spend another $20 so soon is a minor disappointment, but "Oh Well" but I think I will do it.

To each his/her own.

:apple:

I just bought the $20 update. I can tell you it's well worth it and Apple wont have a grudge against you for jailbreaking. :p

There's one other annoyance with the upgrade that no one's mentioned, I think. Does anyone actually want all 5 apps? App-bundling is inane, especially if not all the apps work everywhere. (I can only use Google Maps at wifi hotspots, for example.)

Btw: Ever get the feeling that Steve Jobs is reading this and writing down our ip addresses and Mac serial codes (or whatever)?
