why are the AppleTV and iPhone updates free? It's only $20 but the fact that they screw only a few customers suck. Apple is becoming to greedy. I feel for you touch owners. Screw their model.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::
I would have add more images but my limit is 20.
You can be as mad as you want to be but directing the madness at Apple is simply directing the energy in the wrong direction. Instead direct it a the law makers that gave us the latest accounting laws.

Besides we are getting off dirt cheap. It is not like Apple is gouging us for these apps, in the end I doubt if they even make that much money off these updates.

It can't be or you should also pay for the iPhone upgrade also.
Oh but it can be. That is what is so frustrating about the new accounting standards, lots of details for a public company to get right.

The big thing with iPhone is that revenues from the iPhone are accumulated over two years. I'm not sure how Touch is being handled. If they take all the revenue immediately then Apple has to charge something for the NEW FEATURES ADDED. Yes seems stupid but then again there are a lot of democrats in congress.

Clearly the update include new features beyond the repair or update of old features thus the obligation to charge.

Dave.

Who are you and me to decide what should apple charge for their products. that job is for apple execs. You can decide if you want to buy or not. Thats it.
What a bunch of heartless Marketing apple execs. I guess they failed Marketing 101 from the get go. They all should be fired.

Sometimes it's better not to know. They should have never released that if they were going to charge for it.

btw, horrible end of the keynote.

All of you who are DEFENDING Apple's decision to charge $20 for this, realize this. These 5 apps are INCLUDED in the 1.1.3 firmware. The thing that you buy from iTunes? A 20KB file. All it does it it modifies the plist file (in Springboard) to ENABLE the apps to appear on the home screen thing. How is a 20KB file worth $20??

Just out of curiosity, is this 20kb file something that could be shared on multiple iPods? Or will it only work on your personal iPod.

Not saying I am going to do this... Just wondering...

P.S. I am sick of hearing about all the accounting laws, They could have charged $.99 if it was strictly legal reasons. They obviously want to make money.

Just upgraded, worth the $20 IMHO.

Think of it this way ... how many times have you bought some piece of equipment or gadget only to have it obsolete in a few months and no way to upgrade?

That's the beauty of having the Touch driven by software and no buttons!

They are two separate things... i updated to 1.1.3.. then through the applewebsite I was redirected to the itunes store to purchase the touch app updates.. i purchased.. then i followed the directions to sync my touch.. and nothing

Question: did you authorise your iPod touch to iTunes?

jonathanjong: I'm not an iPod touch owner because I'm an iPhone early adopter, so I feel your pain. I really wish Apple would have released the new functionality for free, but I can understand why they may have gone this route as well. It was nice being able to discuss both sides of the issue here in a civil manner though. :) I look forward to adding new functionality to my iPhone in the future, either via the approved Apple way or via Jailbreak if need be. But for now, I'll play the chicken route. :p

Ipod Touch Has Vpn Wooo!

I'd just like to let everybody here know that I took the plunge and bought the apps. I can now confirm that the iPod Touch OFFICIALLY HAS VPN SUPPORT!

This was my one major gripe with the iPod originally, and now they've fixed it, so hurrah! Well worth the upgrade to me (I'd previously relied on Jailbreaking)

Whats more, they've improved it's location. Rather than be located under General>Network Settings>Wifi>VPN or whatever it was. It's now simply a toggle switch on the Settings screen.

This = hugely useful if like me you pull it out for a few seconds during the day at Uni, and need to quickly turn VPN on again (after all, keeping WiFi on all the time in your pocket for no reason isn't great)

So yeah, I'd just like to confirm that for anybody not sure about buying this because of the VPN, the iPod Touch now actually OFFICIALLY supports it!

In case you couldn't tell, I'm one happy customer ;-)

Can you add to your calendar when your out on the town or do you still have to only add things at home. I would buy one if they came out with a way to add a cal event when out working.

wowwowowow....what's VPN? Will this allow me to get on a WPA2 Enterprise encrypted network? And is this on 1.1.3 or just the paid toggle?

20$ hmmm. Not really a great move by Apple. But it`s just 20 bucks in the end. So no need for any whining. Better than having to jailbreak just for these apps.

Telling people to accept what corporations charge them without "whining" is, um, a form of whining.

It's bend-over-and-take-it whining: the worst kind, really.

Adding stuff to the Calender came with 1.1.2. Free.

Can you please explain to me what VPN is? For example, to use my school campus wifi each time I need to go to the login screen and sign in. Is VPN helpful to me then? Does VPN give me an advantage, is it time saving? What does it do?? No idea, so thanks.

Also again, can we buy the ugrade with iTunes gift cards?

VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It's a type of encryption/authentication used by most unis and some companies to employ an easy open WiFi network whilst keeping track of the users on it. My uni use it, and my Macbook works fine with it. The iPod Touch originally didn't have it though, much to my great annoyance, so i couldn't use it when i took it around with me. If your campus wifi doesn't explicitly ask for VPN, or you don't know what it is, then I guess that it doesn't employ it. Plus VPN usually doesn't rely on a web based sign in.

And in response to your question, it's part of the paid 'toggle' so to speak. I know a lot of people are angry with this, but I'm just happy to finally get the stuff i wanted.
