NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M (Bottom on the range for the new iMacs)
vs
AMD Radeon HD 6770M (My 2011 top of the like 21.5" iMac)

Posts in that link say the 640M is 10%-20% better and uses less power to run. So where/how/why do you say that the 2011 iMac GPUs are better? I'd really like to know your reasoning behind this. So I and we all know the real facts.

2011 27" GPU: 6970M - 3Dmark score: 2821
2012 27" GPU: 660M - 3Dmark score: 2320
My messages were before Apple updated the store here, before we knew they had other GPU options. So that is the reasoning behind that. There are your real facts. Can I remove the mic now?

Hmm...some people have likened this to the switch from CRTs to LCDs.

When I moved from a CRT to an LCD I got something which did its primary function BETTER. It gave a better picture.

There are too many downsides and not enough of a reason for Appl€ to justify this form factor shrink.

I just was reading through some of these posts and just noticed that you can't even order a imac until dec? Am I correct with this. Except for a refurbished.

I expect both devices to be presented as one volume. Of course it can be bad, logically, but by the same token it can also be good.

All I am saying is that there are potential advantages by using the knowledge the OS have about the files and filesystem that is unknown to the disk. That would go beyond a normal cache.

I am not saying it couldn't be smarter if the OS is involved. It would still be a cache by functionality.

The first generation of hybrid drives depended on Windows, were barely noticed, and failed.

The second and third generation are self-contained in the drive.

Now Seagate is preparing a new generation enhanced by Intel. I hope they will still work independently with different hardware.

Yes it does make sense. Alot in my oppinion - touch is commen now a days and LaunchPad is made for touch use. And I guess if Apple not want to kill it self, they will follow Windows and make next release of OS X a touch and desktop OS as windows 8.

There you have the choice. And thats brilliant. I stick with mac though... Just not at work.

Even if Apple tweaked OS X to be more touch friendly you'd still have the issues of a) holding your arms up in the air all day to use the iMac and b) OS X apps are not designed for touch. Imagine using Photoshop CS 6 with touch?! It's just not designed for it. They'd have to do what MS is doing and build a version of the OS that let's you switch between iOS (touch based OS and apps) and OS X. But that's kind of a mess too.

Also, I think we have a ways to go before one can be truly productive with a touch-based interface. As a designer, interface coder and programmer... I'm far more productive with a mouse and keyboard... at leave given the current state of hardware and software. Maybe some day.

Although I'm a portable user rather than desktop, I think this update is a bit stupid.

What's the point of omitting a feature like an optical drive (I know the tech is on it's way out, but many many people like to have one, especially on a desktop machine) for the sake of thinness of a DESKTOP computer that will almost never be seen anything other than head on and doesn't need to be moved anywhere (for most people)

If the tech (ODD) really wasn't used at all anymore I could understand, but I feel like iMacs should have had them for this year...

Still I'm not at all surprised and not even annoyed just think apple could have got more sales if they'd left it in.

I was a little disappointed in the iMac announcement. I agree with a lot of what has already been said.

There wasn't a need to make it that thin. It's a desktop. IMO the iMac is going down the same road as the Macbook Pro . No upgradability after the sale or user serviceable items.

But it is a sexy beast :D

Lets agree to disagree - I will say when windows 8 hits the market with even tablets running windows 8 and windows rt, (windows have more than 80% of the OS market - almost every single new pc is delivered with it) it will be the new black. So Apple will have to follow or they will look old and grey - I love mac os except that I felt scre*** with the last update that was just hot air. Good it was cheap.

The idea with a touch homescreen that turns desktop-like, with a single click. It's new... Unseen... And pretty good thinking.

Photoshop ??? Why even list that. Yes to touchscreen but you still have the mouse. Having a touchscreen doesnt mean you have to kill the mouse.

....... And because someone asked........

My nickname here... Apple In The Mud has nothing to do with Apple - It's my favorite song - google it. Even have it tattoed on my chest. I love Apple - but still... I want new stuff, to keep my love alive.

The iPad Mini is pure love from here :)

What I like to know from the optical drive users is why they are still using them? You can download everything you need from the web, and with fast internet connections it doesn't take hours anymore either.

The timing for losing the optical drive is about right. Get with the times.

plus not everyone has hi speed internet or even able to get it have high speed some have data caps on it so you pull a itunes movie from the cloud or buy it off itunes in high def you can hit you data cap quick

Yes okay, it might seem old, but Adobe's Suit doesn't come as a download in my household.

Of course it does. I downloaded Lightroom, Photoshop, Acrobat, Microsoft Office, almost everything comes as a download. Even Microsoft Windows 8, I downloaded and installed it on a VM from a disk image. There's no need to use a disk, ever. Except an audio CD, since you still can't buy FLAC.

Sorry, but did you see me mention anywhere that Adobe didn't feature download alternatives? No, in fact my argument wasn't that at all. I live in a remote area in Scotland, and telephone lines are horrendous, around 100Mbps so downloading them would not be an option. Reason being why I also object to OS X being download only. It's alright for you being in California, where LTE speeds are a thing of the present, and not something on the horizon.

There's always a need to use a disc for me, always.

I think you took a wrong turn. This is not reddit. Go back to reddit.

Windows RT CANNOT, I repeat, cannot RUN third party Windows apps. It can only run the bundled MS Office Home edition, IE and WinRT (Metro) apps. It cannot join a domain. There are virtually no apps for WinRT.

Windows 8 on the desktop will be the next Vista, a failure. Most ordinary people who have tried Windows 8 hate it and are confused by it. Only fanboys love Windows 8.

What an upgrade!

So they remove the DVD/CD drive (because only people who are "stuck in the past" need to install software from a disk, amirite?). And they make the 21" one impossible to upgrade in terms of RAM. And they make it thin, but add a tumor on the back (lol guiz the pyramids are SOOOO thin, just ignore that big base on the bottom, it's the tip that matters). Why not leave it thick? Oh wait, it's Apple, "MOAR THIN!!!".

Onto the next subject! The SD card slot! "Hey guiz, that SD slot on the side is too easy to use, let's move it onto the back!"

Oh yeah, and that steaming pile of drive. The "Fusion" drive. Aka Intel Smart Response plus a proprietary drive package (there goes the days of upgrading the iMacs ourselves!).

Oh yay, there's one benefit — slightly better graphics cards. Yay. They'll be underpowered and outdated in a year, but hey, might as well enjoy them while they last! Because thinness is much better than installing a desktop card, and, you know, some decent cooling for a change?

Oh well, I guess I'll be going down the Hackintosh route from now on for desktops.

Like burning a cd for the car, or transfer bought cd's to the computer

Yes but the tablets with RT is the cheap models. They also come with real Windows 8.

No I dont think it will be like Vista. Actually I think it will be a huge succes. You cannot compare those 2.

And Im am 100% sure about the touch thing.

You are missing something.

- Twice as much ram.
- Twice as much HDD space.
- Better processor.
- Better graphics.
- USB 3.0

Yes, better processor but how much better? I'll give you the USB 3.0 but the graphics are worse on some models and RAM and HD space are non-factors in my opinion.

I'll wait for the final benchmarks vs the May 2011 model but I'm not seeing much change in a year and a half.

SO right. The only quibbles here is Fusion looks to be auto-tiering and not caching like I-SRT. The other thing is that the GPU's will not be outdated in a year. They will be outdated in 6 months (4 months from when the 27" appears).

From 27 inch 2011 owner w/ personal replaced ssd, I have no complaint for now. I do love the new design but this is much better news than 2012 imac getting retina treatment.

For now.. Well, for 27 inch to be retina, I give them 2 more years.. and even then, I must wait.. I want to use this imac for 4 more years as my work horse.
