This is actually an extremely BIG deal !

Most won't Get It until they See It !

Here is a hint, her name is Victoria, and she's got a Secret !

I seriously doubt even Apple knows what they've just done ... i.e., the extent to which some App Developers can & will exploit this new capability !

Another one: My father passed away last summer and recently I visited my brother and we got to talking about our old man and how much I missed him and I still have dreams of him and I wake up feeling sad. My brother showed me a photo he took of him shortly before he died on the sofa, looking out the window. Then my brother 3D Touched it and in the Live Photo my father turns, notices the camera, and waves and smiles.

I looked up at my brother and sighed and told him what a gimmick Live Photos are and how Apple needs to think of better uses of their technology.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not....

My girlfriend took photos of her newborn nephew and was showing them off to family members and they were adoring the photos. Then she 3D Touched one photo and the baby boy came to "life" with sounds of him babbling and someone actually wowed and said that was amazing.

I couldn't have rolled my eyes any harder. I told my girlfriend she can keep 3D Touch and Live Photos, I'll stick to my superior OLED display.

Translation: "This feature brought a smile to the faces of people close to me, but not to mine. In conclusion, it's worthless."

Very astute.

I don't have this feature on my iPhone 6+, but I'm looking forward to having it on my next iPhone. For myself, it's a worthless gimmick, but I can't wait to see the joy on the faces of my loved ones when I show them the results!

First thing i gladly disabled by default after playing with it for 5 minutes. What a load of crap and memory waste it is in most instances.

Like scrolling through a list of live photos is making my head go loco and most of the time its just random stuff like the movement of putting the phone away

I wasn't a fan but after accidentally leaving it on one time on Christmas, I took a photo and seeing the tree lights blinking afterwards was magical. I wish this feature existed when my grandma was around :(

Don't know if you have kids but it kinda changes the feature a lot. Love live photos of my kids:)
Yes I do. And I love taking "video's" of her. The point is, Apple pushed this revolutionary new feature that only iOS devices can accomplish called "live photos" which isn't anything more than a 3 sec video.

A REAL file system, a live weather widget, and a bigger battery are all way more important innovations than Live Photos.

You are mental if you think that a live weather widget is a bigger innovation than Live Photos.

Also, the health tracking stuff is useful to me. I've lost tons of weight since I could visualise constantly my efforts throughout a day. Turns out people are different?

Thank you for this!

Either this is sarcasm or some sort of disorder which requires professional intervention. My guess is the former. :)

Personally I love Live Photos. Our kids are a bit older now but we take lots of pictures of our dogs and you can see so much more character in a dogs face, eyes, body and tail with a live photo than you could possibly see from a static photo.

The other place we enjoyed Live Photos was on a recent holiday to Slovenia where it beautifully captures the flowing rivers. Water is hard to photograph well but the live photo just brings it to life, and with sound! Fantastic.

Live Photos are amazing!
Now that it has been out a couple years, I've built up a nice library of Live Photos and I love when looking through them and they come to life. :)

GIFs don't have sound though.

And before you say 'videos exist', most people don't tend to share videos on iMessage or Whatsapp because they're quite data heavy.

'Live Photos' removes that psychological impediment.

Live Photos are nice but the way you watch them (with 3D Touch) is too basic and not great IMO.

Motion Stills (made by Google BTW) is much better to browse all your Live Photos. There's also a great video stabilization and you can easily make simple short videos from several photos. Last summer I made a pretty cool holiday video using only Live Photos and Motion Stills.

Well, I don't get it. I think it's pretentious that Apple tries to "humanize" technology. Like health and activity tracking. I question the pragmatic usefulness. What's the point of Live Photos? My brother and my girlfriend have a bunch of them. By far the dumbest photo is one where my dad is craddling my infant son, but in the Live Photo it shows my dad humming a lullaby to my him. Disgusting sentimental crap and not to mention, completely useless.

My girlfriend's father also passed around the same time as my father from the same cancer, and she has a Live Photo of her dad playing the guitar as her wallpaper and once in a while she'll 3D Touch the Lock screen to play the wallpaper. How is this USEFUL technology? A show of hands will reveal that most people find Live Photos are, indeed, a gimmick.

A REAL file system, a live weather widget, and a bigger battery are all way more important innovations than Live Photos.

Not considering the useless comments made using CAPS, the bolded text shows exactly why Apple is changing the world for the best with this technology. Well done Apple!

That is the ultimate goal.

Ok...

To "humanize" technology.

There is example 1 from your own post of its pragmatic usefulness.
(Your sounds like a wonderful brother/son)

There is example 2 from your own post of its pragmatic usefulness.
(Your girlfriend sounds like a lucky woman)

See your own post. Above.

Hrm. Because out of the 3 (you, brother, girlfriend) people in your story, 2/3 (brother/girlfriend) have found Live Photos **extremely** useful. 66%. How is that for "pragmatism"???

Would a "real' file system sell more phones? Nope.
Would a "live" weather widget sell more phones? Nope.
Would a "bigger battery" sell more phones? Probably not.
So a family member had a better experience due to the technology, but you rolled your eyes and said some display hardware was better ... I see.
guys, your sarcasm detectors need fine tuning.

Personally, I find Live Photos wonderful. Love the ones I take of my niece (she does too). Yes, you can take a video but Live Photos are frictionless. Videos take a lot of space and trying to take a lot of very short videos is a major hassle which is why nobody actually does it. Live photos are easy to take and bring photos to life. the ones that don't come out right are easy to discard or convert to regular photos.

anyway, this API is good news. I expect many people will take advantage.

Live photos, probably the most gimmick of an iPhone feature ever.

I think its mostly a gimmick, with really no actual usage. The only time my wife uses live photos is because she accidently turned it on
