Am I wrong, or did they decide to produce it without the Kensington lock hole? That would be stupid, but I didn't find it in the decription and also no picture...

I have no idea why so many are upset.

13" screen
3 pounds (& probably won't burn my legs off)
MULTI-Touch!

I want one.

Bad Analogy

What makes me think a draw back is no built-in optical drive. It's like a car without an 'air' conditioner. And it's really ugly to carry a fan in a car!

Ahem.. one more thing:D, I think MacBook air is more appealing if the price is $1299..

It's more like finding a vehicle without a CD player in it. Quick - name a car that doesn't have a CD player (other than the POS's that only have radio and no MP3 input)? They all still have them. Apple is saying screw the CD player - here's a wireless way to sync up your iPod to the sound system.

I will agree tho - at 1299 I might have actually seriously consider one but at 1799 I just can't... eh well. My 12" PB lives on!!! hahaha

At my job we use 802.1x authentication. Which Leopard broke.

So without an ethernet jack, I wouldn't even be able to use this thing.

Shoot your employer for using 802.1x for basic authentication. Your backbone at work should be broken down by various levels of security, each inside it's own DMZ. Then using wireless isn't as much of a security risk.

Either way, ethernet should be first and wireless for public teasing and public access networks.

$1800 laptop anywhere else will also come with at least 2Gig ram, hardly generous.

I know, I know, I know "BUT ITS SO THIN" - it doesn't matter. Apple's stock is falling, people with sense and know about how the market works know this is silly and is going to flop.

Stocks always fall slightly after keynotes, no news there. They are going to sell the **** out of the Airs in Europe and Japan to general everyday consumers. I can guarantee it.

Power users need not apply -- see the Pro model.

- Built-in battery is not user accessible

When Apple wonders why this product flopped that is all they need to know. The lack of a bevy of ports is something a sub note owner can live w/o but not being able to replace the battery mid-flight or mid-meeting will only ring up "no sale." There will be the usual early adopters but Air Book 2.0 is going to have to do a lot better. This is pure form over function.

Now, c'mon. Really? You're telling everyone to buy an EEE-PC and you have the gumption to call this a piece of junk? This is a great product, but it's too pricey for it's features. But this is lightyears better than the EEE-PC. That's just straight hating right there.

No it's not. The Eee is actually a portable computer. If I wanted to carry a 13" machine around, I'd just buy a MacBook to start with. This is a stupid compromise. It's not like the 12" PowerBook had a cramped keyboard, and it was much more portable than this poor sibling of the MacBook. What bloody difference does 1/4 inch of depth make outside marketing speak?

Just Wow. If they can pull off a laptop like that, I can't wait to see them integrate the technology into the current line of laptops. Lot of gripes, but I like the direction. It think the fact is that they have rocked the industry, and will force change yet again.

This is the most hilarious thread I've ever read in my life. People complainin' about this and that. Crackin' me up. Honestly, I think it's a great product. Big thumbs up to Apple. :apple:

So buy a MacBook. It's thicker and heavier, but it is also cheaper and faster.

Honestly, you'd think the MacBook Air was the only portable Apple offered... :)

you just don't get it do you?
you can make things lighter without making it super thinner.
Trust me, with c2d 1.6 Ghz in it and the thickness, it's gonna produce significant heat problem.

design it just bit more thicker, and Apple probably can make much nicer, more productive and pleasant laptops. oh also with a user replaceable battery.

this isn't an iPod, an ultra portable laptop with non user replaceable battery?
gimme a break.
It's not gonna last more than 7 hours either.
Considring marketing hype, it will probably last 3~4 hours in real time.
No possible access to EVDO network either.
I've been waiting for Apple ultra portable. Trust me, I fall in that market. But as far as I see, Apple just doesn't get it what the market wants.

You guys aren't looking to the future - wireless express cards are old technology. In the UK everyone is moving to 3G wireless USB modems. You can get up to 2.8 Mbps broadband over the mobile phone networks - way faster than those old cards!!

Dude, the UK is well behind in the technology field...
Just wait till you get HSDPA @ 3.6 Mbps, on a cell phone!!!
Maybe that'll be there in five to fifty years?

I believe in the home your still on ADSL2! And your only getting 25 Mbps if your like next to the exchange, Joe Blogs will only achieve 18 Mbps if they're lucky. lol

Fibre is the way forward.... only 120MB/s

The whole point of going small is to make it easier to tote around. A 9" screen with a smaller (but still usable) keyboard would have had me doing cartwheels. I want a mac that can fit in a purse. An keyboard-laden "iPod Touch on steroids", as it were.

I think a 9" MacBook would be too small to be comfortably usable.

Agreed. Either they couldn't maintain shell load capabilities or they couldn't scale it down, or both and decided it's lack of presence wasn't a show stopper.

They should offer a discount on AppleCare for MacBook Air buyers knowing they will be dealing with many of these problems.

Actually this reminds me a lot of an existing sharp laptop released around 2002 (PC-UM10). I have used this and found it was reasonably sturdy (had other build quality issues though). So I suspect Apple can make a pretty strong case at this size. Also 2.8 lbs but with smaller screen and keyboard.

Boo Apple!!!!!!!

Yeah, it's super thin. I do give Apple credit for that. But everything else about it is so basic. Plus, Apple is basically brainwashing us into abandoning DVDs and CDs completely. I don't want to walk around with some stupid external Super Drive to watch a DVD or listen to a cd? Do you? Also, 80GB? C'mon. They couldn't even improve that? Making it super thin isn't that impressive if they're taking the stuff that is already there away and not updating the stuff that needs to be updated. Multi-touch pad is nice, but they should have gone to a multi-touch screen. Mono speaker? Same huge-size frame around around screen? I see this as a MacBook update, not a completely new MacBook. They are suckering us in with it's slimness, when the rest of it isn't impressive at all.
The whole crowd wanted a brand new MacBook Pro, probably called MacBook Touch, and the smart ones know they got let down with this MacBook Air because they can see right through the slimness and lightness of it. Maybe that's why it's MacBook AIR. It has nothing in it.

Guess you don't travel all that much. There are many places in the US and abroad which don't have wireless.

Combine that with Apple's legendary weak wireless reception in their portables and it's a formula for disaster.
This is the reason why the internet capabilities on the iPhone work (because there's a huge data network following you wherever you go) and they won't on the iPod touch (because people will realize that they have to be in their house and connected to their wireless router if they want to use that fancy new weather feature). Wireless internet options are only nice if you have access/coverage... what good is a "maps" option on the 'touch if you're stuck in a place where you need directions and have no signal?

I disagree with this. The build quality of the 12" PB was streets ahead of the iBook: the keyboard, the case, it just felt like a superior machine. And its specs were higher across the board. Don't get me wrong, I liked the iBook too, but the 12" PB was a genuine desktop replacement. If you had one, and a big display on your desk at home, you were really set up. (Try running a 23" ACD on an iBook; at least, until someone worked out how to override the firmware.)...

Someone did figure it out, which makes the lack of dual support OTB irrelevant. I had one and there was nothing overly compelling about it that an iBook didn't provide. You got a little more VRAM, nothing major; a little larger HD, nothing an larger external upgrade wouldn't fix; better superdrive, which you can buy external here; you got significantly worse wifi range, and a significantly hotter running machine all for considerably more money. Keyboard was nice though. The MBA is pretty much the 12PB replacement with a larger screen, which is something I always wished my 12PB had. As you said the 12PB felt like it was superior to the iBook, which I do agree with, but considering you haven't held the MBA it seems a little early to be calling foul. For all we know its going to feel like a dream compared to both the 12PB and the regular MB.

Wow! it looks great, and i can't believe they actually called it macbook air, i mean really, come on steve!

Anyway you know what they say, bigger is better, and i found it hard enough with a 15.5" MBP screen, so it's either 17" or more for me from here on out.

And how about some more hard drive space? Apart from that i think it will sell quite well.

Fibre is the way forward....

What the hell does Japan have to do with the comparison of the US and UK?

We already know Japan is leading in bandwidth connectivity.

Again, Japan is also Apple's smallest market segment.

If you guys don't get excited about this niche product don't expect it to last long with Apple.

This isn't a phone, a portable audio player that anyone will buy. It's a thin utra-portable [non-subnotebook] that is designed for those obsessed with everything being thin.

The MBA... hmmm. Meh. Its not for me. I guess if i could talk my school into giving me one for work then i would be more excited. But then again, i would be scared to death of carrying it around for fear of flexing it wrong if i turned to quickly, or even typing to hard.

To me this product is no more than Steve whipping out his junk and saying to the other PC manufacturers, "Hey look at me, mine's thinner than yours!" Besides the form factor, the specs are pretty underwhelming. Even for an ultralight. And why didn't they go with a 160gb hard drive? I get that this is supposed to a be a companion piece to a larger desktop or even MBP. But still, its a pretty expensive kit.

Yeah, it's a bummer. I was hoping they were getting enough rabid emails from iPhone users about their bizarre battery ideas ("Hey look! We made a tiny portable entertainment center / jukebox / phone / communicator / web browser thingamabob that you can do EVERYTHING with... except, it's not really portable because you'll have to sit near a power outlet most of the time if you actually plan to use it for all those things").

I pity you if the only reaction you can come up with after seeing something that is by anyone's standards a beautiful piece of engineering is to call it a 'turd'. What is wrong with you?

It's not beautiful... the only time it looks OK is when it's closed... once you open it up it has big dead space around the monitor, and an ugly keyboard that doesn't match. Frankly I don't know why people are calling it beautiful.
