Nothing crazy, but I like what I saw.
I hope the limited amount of new features will allow the developers to concentrate of bug fixing and optimiziation.
One can dream...

Hmm, I would think that it would be an either/or situation, where you either choose to extend the display (in the case of Sidecar and AirPlay, as I understand it) or else retain the independent app displays of each device and then navigate/copy/paste between them with your mouse, trackpad or other pointing device via Universal Control.

We'll have to actually check it out to see how it works, but from what Apple demonstrated in the keynote and listed on their website, the independent app modality of each device is likely respected as-is with Universal Control.

If someone's running the beta already and can test this, it'd be good to hear about it.
Definitely understand that its either/or and that Universal Control is a separate thing from macOS becoming an AirPlay receiver. Just pointing out that new feature may be the Apple-native, wireless version of Target Display Mode people were hoping for.

I suspect it’s more because of the limitations of working from home. Something that Tim Cook recognises all too well, hence his eagerness to have as many employees back at Apple HQ ASAP.

Sidecar is basically a technology for extending the display of your Mac to a device such as an iPad. On the other hand, Universal Control doesn't seem to extend the display, but rather allows you to navigate between independent displays on different devices, as if you were operating one device. Subtle but big difference.

In other words, an iPad connected to a Mac using Sidecar basically functions as an external display; whereas an iPad connected to a Mac using Universal Control still functions as an iPad, with upfront access to the iPad home screen and all its apps and features. That was my takeaway from the presentation, anyway.
Yes, that was my understanding. In practice this will be very different from sidecar.

For example, you can still use this to have two windows open, but would need to open each one on the relevant device and can’t move them between windows without closing one and opening the other (which is fairly easy using handoff).

What we don’t know is whether this will also allow a display extender function, or whether sidecar will continue as a separate option. Whatever, whilst universal control may take a bit of getting used to I think I will use it far more than sidecar.

I mean they showed it on 16” MacBook Pro so…

EDIT: Sorry, I looked again and...

That iMac looks right in that room. I like silver/white way more than silver/black, but that's just me.

Hopefully, Apple will offer both going forward on iPads AND Macs.

On topic: that feature is my favorite thing in the entire keynote. Now Apple, how about it working on just an iPad and an external monitor? Hmm??

Anyone running the beta able to tell if Airplay 2 is now implemented on a system level?

universal control looks cool

The Universal Control looks good actually

Universal Control looks simply incredible.

Universal Control is what I need. WAAAA!!!! I work with 2 Macs at home.
You know this has been on windows since like 2011 right?

Just found this in the 'all features' page:

Built-in authenticator

Generate verification codes needed for additional sign-in security. If a site offers two-factor authentication, you can set up verification codes under Passwords in System Preferences and Safari — no need to download an additional app. Once set up, verification codes autofill when you sign in to the site.

The same thing appears in the iOS features page too, so this is almost certainly synced via iCloud Keychain.

-----It would have been nice if this release added OS-native support for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to the Game Controller framework. I guess we'll still have to wait for that, though.

Some great new features. I’m really looking forward to:
Tab groups
Universal control
Airplay to Mac
Quick note
(Edit) FaceTime features
Share play
Live text
iCloud+
Any other new privacy features

(Edit- I’m curious to see how much the new FaceTime features like spatial audio make the video call experience more natural as Apple claims. Video calls definitely have a long way to go compared to in person. My main frustration is all the accidental talking over each other. It gets so chaotic.)

One question I have: will universal control and airplay to Mac require being on the same WiFi network? Or will they create an ad hoc connection?

Also how about airplay to iPad (from iPhone)??

-----Does menu bar transparency/translucency still a bit much in Monterey with the default Big Sur desktop background/wallpaper, or was it toned how this looks down a bit for all possible desktop pictures?

Very lacklustre update for end users... it's like a point release, not a full new version.
I agree. As a friendly FYI, x.x and x.x.x versions are usually called “minor“ versions/releases while x releases are usually called “major”.
