Were you really stressing about it that much? Was it keeping you up at night?

There exists the possibility that smash is a current employee of Apple or is close to someone who is. Many of Browett's changes WERE stress inducing to retail employees especially.

Two possibilities regarding Forstall: 1) he was potentially a threat to Cook, since he was rumored to be a possible successor to Steve Jobs, and might well have been had Jobs lived a few more years. 2) Apple Maps was a big PR disaster, and it wasn't the first under Forstall's watch (Siri).
...

probably (2)... Forstall may be 'Apple material' but he seems kinda young and reckless to be CEO of a major maturing (complexity) corporation... Cook has the respect of Wall Street and peers, while Forstall moving to a CEO level would have eventually been the loss of both Cook and Ive.

.

Bad move. It's when you give one person too many responsibilities that things begin breaking down.

Browett's and Forstall's departure (if they were both nudged out rather than leaving for their own reasons) are a good sign that Tim Cook is prepared to make the tough decisions to keep Apple strong and vital. Plus Ive and Forstall fought like crazy, from what I read, which didn't sound productive.

There was a rare interview with Ive in The Telegraph in late May this year. Here's a key extract:

When I mention the fake stitching, Ive offers a wince but it's a gesture of sympathy rather than a suggestion that he dislikes such things. At least, that's how I read it. He refuses to be drawn on the matter, offering a diplomatic reply: "My focus is very much working with the other teams on the product ideas and then developing the hardware and so that's our focus and that's our responsibility. In terms of those elements you're talking about, I'm not really connected to that."

Read the whole thing here.

There's limited info, but when Ron Johnson left there was no successor announce... bad mistake. It probably/should have been one his most important duties is to get a successor before leaving.

.

Not so at all. When you have a senior executive that is a mismatch the faster you get them out the better.

I had written Tim a letter a couple months ago. Not saying anything about Forstall, but suggesting that Ive take over as Design head for the company. I'd like to think I had some tiny drop of influence on his decision, but ultimately I'm just glad this is all playing out the right way. Because this announcement could've just as easily been "Sir Jony Ive is leaving". I think Ive detested Forstall's....excesses in iOS land. Perhaps there was a face-off. Maybe we'll know in 20 years if Ive ever writes a bio.

Anyway, for now, this could not be better news. I have to admit, my confidence in Apple has been flagging lately, but with Ive in the design driver's seat for the company, Mansfield and Eddy Cue playing prominent roles, Apple is in a great position for amazing products again.

Wait, what?

So much for calling Forstall the next Steve Jobs like CEO

Well, he was rumored to be difficult to work with/tyrannical. Perhaps his time in the wilderness will lead to a return and becoming, maybe an interim CEO?

Maybe we haven't heard the last from Scott Forstall at Apple...

If Forstall was taking the blame for maps and or Siri he would be gone immediately and Not advising Tim cook in the interim. He left by personal choice.

Um, what? Maybe my sarcasm detector is off, but you do realize that you already can't see individual pixels unless you're holding your phone closer to your face than is comfortable to use, right? That's the definition of a retina display. Increased resolution on the iPhone at this point would have absolutely no point except to make the thing more expensive and harder to produce.

Very strange how some people interpret posts. Just like 2560x1600 13 inch retina display is an optimised 1280x800 screen. 960x640 is an optimised 480x320 and that's freaking tiny...

An increased resolution would bring a larger phone size which is what I expect to happen eventually. With the legacy iOS advocate out of the way, it's a perfect opportunity to change iOS. Apple have used the same physical design since iPhone 4. The departure of Forstall signals a change in how iOS is being handled. My speculation only of course.

This is good news for iOS. With Ive in charge of human interfaces, the software will finally match the hardware.

Bad move. It's when you give one person too many responsibilities that things begin breaking down.

Hmmmm. A man named Steve Jobs seemed to have a hell of a lot of responsibilities. Remember leaders still delegate many of their tasks, by necessity.

Yuppeee!

Browett out immediately? Wow, Christmas does come early this year. At least Apple has corrected itself immediately -- well done, Tim.

Looks to me like the right management changes have taken place. Mansfield back in. Ive to lead UI design. Not bad at all.

Ive and Forstall have been at each others' throats for the past couple of years. Forstall has been pushing for more skeuomorphism in the UIs of both iOS and OS X (think Calendar and iBooks), often in the past with Jobs' backing.

Ive thinks it is tacky and has been pushing against it for functional minimalism.

It looks like Ive won.

Perhaps combining iOS and OSX under one management scheme seems a better idea with the release of a wholly integrated and modern looking Windows 8? Not that Apple's hiring decisions would be so quickly influenced so..

Honestly though, I know Forstall messed up, but to fire him, after he's served for so long? Should've at least demoted him or something. But I guess Ive is a much better successor and the people bashing Cook realize he at least deserves some credit!

Maybe they can get Ron Johnson back from J.C. Penney. He did a good job with Apple retail before.

When Jobs returned to Apple after his stint away he came back a stronger more mature leader. Johnson's time at Penney may have done something similar for him.

With this shake up Apple admits that iOS/iDevices fell behind Android both in software and hardware design categories. I am not sure that putting the industrial designer in charge of GUI design is the best way to address this issue though.

I think putting someone who knows what people like to see and how they should respond to it is a great thing! Currently, the design of Apple products is a big part of why they sell so well, the OS is the other part (which has been semi-stagnent the past couple years). So with Great hardware design and Great software design, Apple will be unstoppable! :D
