Good riddance to bad rubbish!

I'm so glad that both of these "guys" have been booted where the sun don't shine! Browett is a cheap-ass discount store guy with no taste and no idea of how to give fine customer service. Forstall is a liar and a weasel who was more into coroprate politics than he was into creating great products!

Just look at Maps! Even though it is the best mapping software on the planet, it should have been better. MUCH better. That's the way a REAL Apple exec does things.

And now with Sir Jon in charge of all human interface, we'll see iOS and OSX totally merge into the one OS to rule them all! Forstall was too pushy and didn't listen to Sir Jon. He didn't have what it takes to really progress towards transcendent greatness. But Sir Jon does! He'll whip Federighi into shape in no time, and together, they will introduce an OS that again changes the entire world!

This is the tipping point for Apple, when they transform themselves from being merely the biggest, baddest tech company in the word to being the biggest and most powerful force the world has ever seen! The Catholic Church? The Roman Empire? Twentieth-Century America? They ain't going to look like sheet compare to what Apple is about to become. Nations will bow down to them. Before Tim and Sir Jon are finished, Apple will become the center of World Civilization.

And it can't happen soon enough!

There's limited info, but when Ron Johnson left there was no successor announce... bad mistake. It probably/should have been one his most important duties is to get a successor before leaving.

.

Johnson left unexpectedly. He was offered the CEO position at JC Penney, whic I'm sure at the time sounded like a good idea to take.

Honestly though, I know Forstall messed up, but to fire him, after he's served for so long? Should've at least demoted him or something. But I guess Ive is a much better successor and the people bashing Cook realize he at least deserves some credit!

He wasn't fired. Just a mutual agreement to move on .

But I never wanted Forstall out. Falling on the sword for maps and siri is ridiculous.

To be fair, both (especially Siri) are poor services. The turn-by-turn interface on Maps IS nice, very nice infact, but the maps data and image quality is abysmal in places. As for Siri ... least said the better.

I didn't like Scott Forstall. I hope/believe iOS will become even greater without him at the helm.

Absolutely agree. There is much wrong with iOS, not the least the almost non-existant developments of it the past 2-2.5 years or so. It's getting ridiculous. Yes, brand identity and making users feel "at home" is important, but many feel iOS has stagnated especially with the *cough* bold, refreshing iOS 6 release.

Combine that release with having the major new feature being very controversial, and he was probably doomed.

iOS hasn't impressed me since iOS 4 to be honest, except for iCloud in iOS 5. But that's basically it. One feature, and it's a technical behind-the-scenes one at that!

yes, that's what I thought ... my point is that you'd think that he would have found or had a recommendation for a successor, but no successor was announced.

Woohoo!

Ding dong, the witch is dead.

Ive replacing Forstall as head of UI?

That's the best news to come out of Apple in years. Skeuomorphism has just been thrown under a bus, where it belongs.

Forstall deserves the sack over Maps.

Completely agree. My confidence in Tim Cook's leadership has just taken a quantum leap forward. This is the best Apple-related news in years..

With this shake up Apple admits that iOS/iDevices fell behind Android both in software and hardware design categories. I am not sure that putting the industrial designer in charge of GUI design is the best way to address this issue though.

As opposed to an engineer? Not saying engineers can’t also be excellent designers, but based on the evidence we know under Forstall (& weirdly Jobs) iOS/OS X grew more and more skeumorphic/gimmicky. I’m not one of these anti-skeumorphism people either, I think it’s s design tool that has it’s place, but it’s become the proverbial hammer (i.e. when all you have is a hammer every job looks like a nail)

I doubt iOS 7 will be a major change. Forstall has probably been working on it for months now. iOS 8 will be the big one IMO.

The iOS screen of icons seems aged now. Time to move on and provide information without having to open apps all the time, ie facebook, email, weather, stocks, etc to get that info. The notification center should be front and center. As much as a I hate to say it, the MS tile interface seems more modern.

Start by telling the truth to yourself. Apple Maps is one of the worst mapping software out there.

I dunno I like Ive but I liked forstall he's been there forever. Maybe he'll stay in a different roll. He's here for another year anyway.

I wonder how Ive will contribute to the HIGs. Perhaps new apps designed from a single block of pixel? The unipixel?

My thoughts exactly. However they could scrap what they were working on and focus on the new UI people have been banging on about.

That is, SIR Ive to you!

No, we NEVER use this form. Sir Jony, Sir Jonathan, Ive (considered impertinent unless you're ennobled yourself) or Jony Ive (close acquaintances, with his permission) would be correct. But NEVER Sir Ive.

Lord Ive would be correct, should that happy day ever arrive.

I'm guessing you're American? This stuff takes a generation to learn:).
