Who cares about a 'dated' (but still good looking) design when you're getting such a great computer and monitor all in one?
(see what I did there?)
Everybody cares, because we are in 2020, and still cannot adjust vertically the monitor, still ships with 8GB Ram and 256 SSD.
This is like trying to sell you a 2010 Ford model with update motor and updated tires, but same old external design.

The lack of innovation is in the design. The rest is progressing fine.
What is progressing fine?
They ship in 2020 with 8GB RAM and 256 ssd. That is laughable.
The graphic card is average, there is no touch screen, and thermal has NOT been improved.
Minor interior upgrades is NOT innovation.

Vertical adjustment would be great. 8GB RAM/256GB SSD is exactly what a base model iMac should provide.

Exactly. Its as if @Peperino only measures 'innovation' by one superficial metric: The outer appearance.

With apple fans like that, it's no wonder the company has stressed form over function too often in the past decade.
It seems like you get content with a mere processor upgrade. It seems that we have different understandings for "Innovation". Once again, minor internal upgrades do not qualify as innovation.
and it seems that you are ok in 2020 to buy a model that looks like 2010 with specs of 2018, because shipping with 8gb Ram and 256 SSD in 2020 is kind of a joke, especially for an old design computer that has not been updated in a long time.
It seems that you are content with a Kia car, but then do not claim it is a Mercedes and charge like it is a Mercedes for it.

People who care about getting work done, since that is the point of a computer, not to be an artsy conversation piece at a cocktail party.
Getting things done has nothing to do with Apple selling you a 10 year old computer with the spec of 2018 (8gbRam and 256 in 2020 is a joke). Apple squeeze this model for many years, but when they are charging like a Mercedes when it looks like a 10 year old Kia, it is not ok.

Does it really matter if the bezels are 1 inch or 10 inches? It’s a desktop computer, it’s not like you’re gonna bring it with you in a backpack. On the contrary, large bezels in the iMac allows for more airflow. Because of this the iMac is almost always silent, in contrast to the new MBPs which can’t even drive an external screen without the fans going crazy.

it matters if Apple is includi nag the thick 1”+ size of the bezel in the total viewable screen size! If they are doing that then Apple is charging for a larger screen than what you’re paying for and that isn’t right. Again it’s an IF they are doing that.

at the least Apple should’ve updated with 4 TB3 ports and 2xUSB-A post.

I think I’ll wait and see if my Late 2015 iMac makes it until the Apple CPU arrives. I guess we shall see. In the meantime, Apple cleans out the parts bin. I’m sorry $500.00 for a non-shiny screen? I love, love, love my Apple products. But sometimes I think they ”jump the shark” on some of their pricing for HD and RAM, and now this new screen. It should simply be an option at no cost. I’m sure others will correct me on the tech. of it to justify the price. Stay tuned later when I fold and buy one ;)

Apple is emptying out the pantry ~.
It had contracts with intel and probably other manufacture companies for parts prior to their breakthroughs with AS. Would have been stupid financially to nix these models. Especially since there will be complainers when the AS models don't allow bootcamp. These models are going to be around for a long time as in 5years people will be desperate to find them and keep their legacy software and hardware running when their 2013 models go defunct.

The panel is 27" diagonal.

I’m not sure if that answers my inquiry. 2020 iMac launched in 21.5” & 27” right? So by “Panel” that’s the glass edge to edge then right?

It is the diagonal of the actual LCD panel and does not include the bezel area.

I just measured the viewable area of my iMac 5K and it is 27 inches, diagonal.
When I include the black bezel, it is 29.5 inches, diagonal.

AirPods. At least one of my colleagues thinks his AirPods are the best Apple product he has ever purchased.

Apple Watch.

Apple is surely on the verge of releasing some AR headset gear.

Steve died 9 years ago man. A lot has happened since then.

The 2019 Mac Pro is a new, innovative design, as is the 2019 6k XDR monitor.

And you say there havent been any new products since Jobs passed away in 2011, but there's the Apple Watch in 2015.

And moving to design their own CPUs and GPUs for all their products is enormously innovative.

Are there ways they could be more innovative? Sure. But it's not a fair picture to say they've made no innovative changes to existing products, and not introduced major innovative new products.

Wireless earbuds and smartwatches were around already; Apple just put out their own versions. Ditto AR headgear.

It's been 12 years since the iPhone was announced. In that time, Apple has made bigger iPhones, much bigger iPhones, and one that is much smaller to fit on your wrist, while removing the wires from the earphones. The technology is entirely derivative, as is putting out sup'ed up iMacs and monitors based on the 2004 form-factor.

I understand that we cannot expect anyone to come up with something as groundbreaking as the iPhone every few years but, since Jobs died, Apple has devolved into being Microsoft, Samsung or any of the other tech companies who focus on tweaking the specs of the existing product line in an effort to get us to upgrade our old models for the latest version of the same stuff. There's a reason I'm typing this on my mid-2010 iMac: they haven't given me a good enough reason to upgrade. I kept my iPhone 6S for years too, only upgrading when the 11 Pro at last gave me valid reasons to do so.

This is the reason I brought up Jobs' passing. Apple doesn't not have that evil-genius driver of innovation any more; it is now a slave to quarterly sales figures and the stock price, just like every other company. I still love my Apple products, I am simply lamenting the fact that we are not going to see - from Apple - the leaps forward of the likes of the Macintosh, iMac, the iPod and the iPhone.

My 2012 iMac is a damn champ. The Fusion Drive died years ago, I added an external SSD. Then the neck snapped spontaneously one night. I propped it up with some books. Fans started rattling recently, I slapped it in the back and they quieted down. Now, it’s reached the end of the road for macOS updates as of Big Sur.

The thing is, it still runs great. I use Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator and Final Cut Pro on it all day and it just keeps on chucking along.

I’m so tempted to buy this new iMac to replace it but given that mine has lasted 8 years and I can’t picture Apple supporting Intel chips for that long after the transition is over in 2 years, I’d be setting myself for disappointment.

Bring on the Apple silicon iMac!

I used to think like you, I don’t anymore.

Apple Watch is NOT derivative. It’s a completely new product for Apple as well as the entire digital watch industry. Sure apps were available on Sony’s Watch (in 2015 it was THE leading competition by features, not sales), but it’s the first users can download directly. The first to not only have heart rate and ecg but also able to easily view records and share them to the user or doctors (in USA currently) and track irregular heart rate instances! Digital watch faces again the first. First digital watch to have gold, porcelain and titanium. First to have extended warranty and fashionable wrist bands. It’s completely new the items I’ve mentioned to the entire industry - not just watches themselves!!

AirPods Pro - 2ND True Wireless earphones (again Apple created this market along with no Master/Slave tech design - nobody else did that) that will have Spatial Audio - an Industry first this winter. This is NOT derivative this is innovation via FW sound profile. Apple thought ahead here. Innovation.

Thunderbolt, like FireWire before it, innovation with Inte for faster wired local connections - 1 cable for data and graphics and charging.

acid etched glass for minimizing glare - innovation not derivative!

you’re just blinded because you expect the CEO to be the evil genius to push the company. It’s other employees that are doing this within.

Also it wasn’t always Jobs that brought innovation. Scott brought Time Machine (sure it was in Linux for local OS backups but nothing thisclose to UI and ease of use and auto detection of backup drives used prior)! Scott also bright is the OS for iPhones. Imagine the limited failure of iPhone after yr 3 if Apple chose to go with McFadden’s dream of using an iPod for the OS.

open your eyes here.

Did you find switching to the external ssd improved performance a lot? How much RAM do you have? I have a 2015 21 inch imac with a fusion drive and it's sluggish as hell. I use PS, Lightroom, and Illustrator also but definitely can't run all 3 at the same time without it basically coming to a standstill. Debating on Upgrading to the new 27" or just trying an external ssd but I'm fixed into 16gb of ram.

Yes, huge improvement. I have an external Samsung SSD. Originally, I was able to separate the Fusion Drive into its hard drive and SSD and ran macOS from the SSD but eventually that broke too. The external works well. Just don’t unplug while running macOS lol

I added 16GB to my 8GB RAM and that extended the life of my iMac too. TBH I can’t believe it still works after 8 years. 🤞🏼

Similar situation as I need a new Mac, but my concern is not only Apple, but developer support. Who knows if they’ll support Intel Macs once the transition is complete after 2 years.

Did I miss the numbers on imac 21.5” price drop?
Surely they were told by MR?
What were the numbers?

The SSD prices were essentially cut in half. This is somewhat a bum deal for the top line 21.5" which used to get the upgrades for $100 less, but now pays the same as the base.

Also, a 256GB SSD was made standard instead of a plain 5400 rpm drive. A 1TB Fusion drive is now a free updowngrade.

Somebody asked 10 pages earlier what the best option for audio recording would be? The i7 or i9. For a DAW the CPU matters, but it should not run so hot that the fans become too audible.

Somebody else answered that in that case the iMac Pro was the best out there, but for me that’s really not an option - simply too expensive (too Pro if you like).

So I’m gonna raise that question again as it’s pretty valid.

I know I’m late to the party but does anyone have a Unigine Heaven Benchmark score for the new 5700 XT GPU? Trying to compare it to the Radeon Pro 580 for WoW.
