I think it exists because it's the most popular iPad!
Indeed. People are so naive when they believe everyone walks around with 700USD in their pocket!

Heck, 329 is still a massive amount of money for many people, but in this day and age, kids are brought up into a world of entitlement and as my old man used to say, "they believe money grows on trees".

the iPad is not a kids' device. I would enjoy it to read books, surf the web and read mails as an adult.
I don't know what a iPad Pro could do better in such scenario.

Not having a jab, but do you have kids?

I could spend 200USD on a crappy Android tab which lasts no time, and has little support, or 316USD (with an iPad Air trade-in), for a decent iPad which supports all the educational apps and has a shelf-life of 6-7 years if looked after. It also maintains value.

the 2019 iPad air does not share the form factor. There was no 2018 iPad air

Sorry, the 3rd generation iPad Air from 2019. The length and width are identical between the 10.5" iPad Pro, 3rd gen iPad Air, and all 10.2" base iPads, with very minute differences in thickness. Most cases will fit all of these models, with minor variations due to the iPad Pro's camera bump or the base iPad's 0.05" increase in depth.

I got myself a 2017 iPad Pro last year, and got my mom the 2020 iPad. Size and shape they're practically indistinguishable, though mine has a better display (and hers is nominally slightly faster in some situations).

OK, but computers -- which the iPad is, really -- have plummeted in price over the years.

What kind of computer would you have been able to buy in 2010 for $260 ($329 in 2010 dollars)? Maybe some rock-bottom "netbook" kind of thing, but I don't think even that.

I'd have preferred a a laminated display like the iPad Air 2 from 2014 over a new centre stage capable front camera or USB-C but I suppose its better for schools to have cheap front glass repairs.

I’m impressed they’ve kept the same US$ price point given the spec bump (double storage, better CPU, better cameras), which is a real-terms price decrease given inflation is running at 4%. Here in the UK, the iPad 9 will even retail £10 cheaper than the iPad 8.

The price point for the entry level model is a very sensitive issue. If you completely load up the spec by turning iPad 9 into an almost iPad Air, then you load up the price and divert education and price-conscious consumers to look at Samsung and Google.

Those I know who have the iPad 8 love the device and think it is great value. The iPad 9 will be even more so.
