Which is why it would be nice with an A9 chip, wouldn't it? It feels a bit like this Apple TV was supposed to be released last year then the iPhone 6 and the A8 chip came out.
My take is this A8 will be plenty for the first wave of apps to come out for tvOS. Later on, the fifth generation will get the performance increase and we can see lots of flesh bouncing volleyball games.

If you wanted HDMI 2.0, it would have been easily over $200 retail. Quit the highchair spoon banging. This design is optimized for volume distribution worldwide.

You have no idea about the volume commitments needed to secure a 4K chip set these days with the IP licenses involved. Again, you cannot get 4K below $200 a unit retail.

In your neighborhood, perhaps, but this device is aimed at both international and domestic sales. Overseas, there are still ISPs with metered, hardwired services plans.

You may see your dream Apple TV on 5th generation but not now. Enjoy the apps for tvOS when they come out and I'm sure you will have a lot to complain about them when it doesn't have the same graphics performance as an XBox One.
As an FYI, the Nvidia Shield has HDMI 2.0, 4k @60FPS, includes a game controller, and is less than $200.

Alex would be amazing!! I would also like for Amazon Prime to have an app. It would be great when you search for a show they would include other apps for the search.

I would love a Prime app, too. I don't care for Plex, but get that some people love it, though.

Wouldn't these contradict Apple's ecosystem, though? If you can rent from Prime, doesn't that take customers away from renting from iTunes? Doesn't Plex take people away from Apple's Home Sharing?

What is the deal about 4K? There's barely any content to begin with? Wake me up when 20% or more of content out there is 4K.

Otherwise, I think many are comparing video streaming boxes to the new Apple TV. If that's all you want is streaming, have a ball. I'll be first in line for the new Apple TV. Once the Apps are mature and if Siri works as well as they showed, it's going to be a killer device.

Hardware must come first. If the whole store had a 4K version of every movie and video for :apple:TV, how much of it could sell/rent right now? None. Why? Because nobody can play it until we have 4K-capable hardware. It makes no sense for content owners to make 4K content available until there is a good chance at making some profit. NOBODY can play 4K content for :apple:TV if ALL of it was available in 4K in the iTunes store tonight.

AND, apparently Apple is about to sell tens of millions of new iPhones that can shoot 4K. How are those who shoot all that 4K going to play it in 4K on their 4K TVs?

Less than $200.....It's $199.99. Come on. What are you, an employee of Nvidia? Some shameless advertising there. Sure it looks promising on the forefront but I don't want Android nor do I want anything that ugly as a set top box.....AND the remote is sold separately for an additional $25. You forgot to mention that. ;)

All I want from the new ATV is the ability to play MKV/AVI natively. No mention of this and knowing the ATV track record I won't be thrilled and delighted.

Yes, I will still argue that the final incarnation of :apple:TV1's navigation was the very best yet. Our own "movies" being in a menu called "movies" and our own "TV Shows" being in a menu called "TV Shows" was far more Apple-like "just works" than anything since. "Computers" doesn't sound like it should be the home of our own movies or TV Shows.

I wish Apple would go back and review that navigation and resurrect many great (IMO) lost features like those... and even using the "Shows" tag so that serialized movies (like Star Wars, Harry Potter, James Bond, etc) could lump into one menu item and all seasons of "TV shows" could appear in one Show menu item instead of being broken out, etc. There was a lot of great Apple UI innovation in :apple:TV1.

I never understood why all my personal content only warranted a single "app button" called "Computers" where the iTunes store was spread out over multiple "app buttons." like "Movies" "TV Shows" "Music" and "Podcasts". I loved my content being given "equality" in the original :apple:TV1.

Not a dealbreaker, just a general feeling.

Apparently, Apple decided that pushing sales/rentals of content was more important... that :apple:TV2 and later should revolve around the iTunes STORE instead of iTunes on our own computers. :apple:TV1 didn't prevent us from being able to buy or rent content from the store either but the migration has been as you observed:
-prominently mixed in with store content in logical menu titles in :apple:TV1 menus
-less intuitively shifted to "computers" in :apple:TV2 menus
-and now it appears it's just mixed in with other apps in :apple:TV4 scrolling app displays (though one can be hopeful that maybe we can drag it up to the top and lock it in place so that it is quickly & easily accessible).

But I still much favor :apple:TV1's version of navigation over anything since. That was "just works" and "for dummies" at it's very best.

lol seems underpowered , short of ram and not very forward looking as it can't play the 4k video recorded on the new iPhone!!
I'll still get one though, I suppose thats what Apple bank on..

Console-quality games? That's why you gimped it with the A8 chip and a 200MB app size limit? All I see is glorified mobile games with touch controls. No thank you! There's also no 4K so you can watch videos from your iPhone 6S... but I will still buy one for renting/buying movies and series. Just hoped for a little bit more power under the hood.

Late October? Bummer. Also no mention of Amazon Prime... hopefully that will be in place before launch. i probably won't purchase until I know it has it as that is one reason I don't use my AppleTV much anymore since I do a lot with Amazon Prime.

They have just announced the tvOS SDK. 3rd party developers need time to develop apps for the tvOS.

There are two disappointments for me. The first is the lack of 4k. There are no shortages of 4k tv's today. Apple builds an iPhone that records 4k video, but then expects you to only be able to consume on an iPad Pro or 5k iMac.

The second is around HomeKit. I guess I was expecting AppleTV to provide some new functionality in relation to this. So much for being an innovator. But the remote looks pretty. Amiright?

I'm also disappointed. Siri is cool but its just a revamped Apple TV box. My old one is still sitting in the cupboard. I was hoping for a 5K TV with sensors that recognise when you're in the room. Everyone is selling TV boxes, they had the opportunity to introduce something different and they haven't.

I find it a worthy upgrade and likely will be on this as soon as it comes out but it's nothing that hasn't been done already by others. The remote is a bit more innovative though, it's about the only stand out feature. Not really sure I care about Siri but being able to swipe around is a nice improvement. Siri will likely make me want to hurl the remote and I imagine the replacement will not be cheap.

Saying the ATV has a new interface is a joke though. Making it white and pastel is not a new interface. Just like IOS. It's really not changed since launch minus the color scheme and some artwork. Just what I wanted, endless scrolling apps. I as hoping they would take some cues for others. FireTV and AndroidTV has much better interfaces.

Didn't read the post I quoted, huh? "Easily over $200 retail" and "Cannot get 4k below $200 a unit" are inaccurate. Why would proving that make me an nvidia employee? This, while sounding like advertising, is just stating fact -> And, the game controller is your remote. You can buy an additional skinny remote for additional money. The box is ugly.

I use an appleTV myself.

I don't think 4K streaming is going to go mainstream any time soon. I mean not only do people need a 4K television, but also a fast enough internet connection.
We also need actual 4K first too.... since the 4K out there is more like 1080P+. Actually, we needs screens large enough to warrant 4K as no one makes them yet and that signal is like when AT&T called 3G+ 4G

Uh, the previous version of the TV had the A5 chip, single core. As to an earlier post wondering why the A9 isn't in the new version, well..... THEY ARE ALL GOING INTO THE iPAD PRO!

That is my question ... did they lobotomize the A8 in the new Apple TV like they did the (A5) in the ATV 3?

If you are expecting PS4/Xbone level gaming on aTV, you are doing it wrong. aTV is focusing on the casual gaming market, which is huge. Hardcore gaming is not for everyone and seriously, if Sony or M$ could build a gaming rig for $150 why wouldn't they. The thing is, it is impossible. To be a console that powerful, you have to have better hardware, which means more expensive for the consumers. If Apple did that and charge aTV for let's say $350, how many people would buy it? Many people have already been complaining $150 is too expensive for a TV box mind you... so yeah, it would be truly unwise for Apple to make it console-quality gaming ready.

That's been said, however, for a $150 box, it is possible to stream games from a Mac (like Nvidia shield). I hope Apple can invest in that.

Disagree. The current design isn't very contextual and hard to find buttons without looking. We'll see how this one feels but I hate the current iteration.

The current design is really just one button with a click wheel like layout. You dont need to look at it. Your thumb goes in the middle. Pressing that selects/plays/pauses Up down goes.... up down....ooooohhhhh left right goes left right or fast forward/rewind ahhhhhhhh

Honestly, the two buttons below on the current remote at the curious ones. The one duplicated the big button in the circle. Useless. The other is a back button, which could have been a long skinny button below the wheel.

But if you need to look at the bloody current apple remote to know what to do with it, this is where Steve Jobs really could have said, "You're holding it wrong!"

I'd personally be happy if, when you lose that bookmark-sized remote, you could say "'Hey Siri, where are you?', and the remote would respond with something like 'I'm over here'".

That's both very funny and probably actually needed. Somebody is going to build a remote finder accessory to stick on it and an :apple:TV app called "find my remote." ;) I'm barely joking.
