4k will only happen once h265 / hevc is supported by apple / more mainstream

Windows 10 supports it so we should see 4k pop up soon in iTunes...

With internal storage, I can smell some jailbreakin goin on y'all

But I'm happy wuth my fire tv - despite having a measly 2gb of free space - yes you get 5gb free to buy at least 2 apps at thApp StoreApp Store

Uuuhhhhhhh, about that jail breaking' thing; IT HAS APPS There is no need to jail break anything. Just get an app, write one yourself, or pay someone to develop it for you. Whith apps, the whole jailbreakin is going to be a distant memory.

Audio Formats: HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1
Dolby Digital Plus is not Dolby Digital so stop trying to convince us that there is Dolby Digital 7.1.

1080p? Wow. Obsolete before it's even released.

Experts predict 4k tvs to reach 61% in North America by 2020, only 10% by 2016

I think declaring 1080p obsolete isn't accurate and won't be for many years

Yep, as I mentioned in my post I have several perfectly wonderful pre-HDMI receivers and my main setup was from ~2006. It's a wonderful plasma setup with 5.1 and good speakers which works well. I don't chase these features since they turn over too quickly leading to great equipment needing to be replaced for no damn good reason.

and this is fine...those that want to keep their older equipment just need to use audio extractors (HDMI in, digital audio out via coax or toslink)...but this is not a failing of ATV since the many many new devices on the market only use hdmi. Not saying you debate this, just pointing out some others complaints on this issue.

Dolby Digital Plus is not Dolby Digital so stop trying to convince us that there is Dolby Digital 7.1.

a.) I never said they were the same.
b.) (therefore) I never tried to convince anyone of anything
c.) I was simply stating the actual name of the dolby product listed elsewhere in a spec list.
d.) your apology is accepted for a.) and b.) and your statement quoted above.

I was doing c.) to stop the crying, nit-picking, hair splitting over the name of the dolby 7.1 product. It's a Dolby 7.1 product, generally speaking.

My guess would be "Dolby Digital Plus" running at 7.1 channels, but I don't know that for sure. Apple is writing different terms in different places. I do know this, I am not going to call the "technically correct" police over this issue!

Thanks, time to move on.

Yes you tried to convince me 2 or 3 times posting screenshots which were all wrong (Can't believe Apple would put wrong info in their page).

But you're right, it doesn't really matter. Time to move on now that we settled that Apple is wrong. :D

I have never posted a screenshot on this sight.

You have me mixed up with someone else.

You lost your XBMC setup when you migrated, though. Frankly, being able to use a non-hacked setup to run XBMC (now Kodi) is probably the only really compelling thing about this AppleTV. I still have a lot of content that iTunes doesn't support (notably lots of home videos in AVI I'd prefer to not convert for the loss in quality).

Yeah I was ok with giving up XBMC because the Plex hack still works on the ATV3. (All I really wanted either hack for was accessing the comedy central feed of the Daily Show, anyway.)

I might have been interested in an App Store for the possibility of an Elgato EyeTV app, which would hopefully eliminate the step between recording shows in EyeTV on my mac and then having to transcode/export them to iTunes so they could be viewed on the ATV. With an EyeTV app on the Apple TV, hopefully I could access EyeTV on my mac directly.

Except, well, I already sort of gave up on EyeTV when the Channelmaster DVR+ came out. The channel master is just much simpler to use (by me and by my wife). My first method for recording and watching over-the-air high-def TV shows was:

Antenna --> HD Homerun --> EyeTV on Mac --> iTunes on Mac --> Apple TV.

An EyeTV app on the new Apple TV would shorten this chain to:

Antenna -->HD Homerun --> EyeTV on Mac --> Apple TV.

But, with the DVR+, my chain is just:

Antenna --> DVR+

So I'm not really excited about the new Apple TV. My current setup meets all our needs, and the new version doesn't add anything we would use. (Siri is only useful in Niche circumstances, as I've found on my iPhone.)

Why not just use a Tablo?

Agree to 4K and local media search, though an app might remedy the search thing to some extent. No 4K is a deal breaker for sure - what were they thinking?
I haven't read through the whole thread as it's so long, but am I missing something here? The 4th gen is going to have an A8 processor while the 3rd gen uses an A5. Respectively, my research turned up 7 GFlops/s vs 166 GFlops/s in their graphics processing capabilities. In other words, just because they didn't say it doesn't do 4k doesn't mean it doesn't do 4k. Why would Apple enable and announce said capability if they weren't ready to roll it out with a meaningful quantity of material?

802.11AC is enough for me (my TV is nowhere near my router). Streaming has been frustrating on the existing AppleTV, so I'm hoping this breaks the log jam.

I'll still be able to play content from my desktop's iTunes library, right? And my iPhones and iPads?

The current design is really just one button with a click wheel like layout. You dont need to look at it. Your thumb goes in the middle. Pressing that selects/plays/pauses Up down goes.... up down....ooooohhhhh left right goes left right or fast forward/rewind ahhhhhhhh

Honestly, the two buttons below on the current remote at the curious ones. The one duplicated the big button in the circle. Useless. The other is a back button, which could have been a long skinny button below the wheel.

But if you need to look at the bloody current apple remote to know what to do with it, this is where Steve Jobs really could have said, "You're holding it wrong!"
It's not the ux I dislike. It's the lack of defining shapes that tell you where the up/left/down/right by feel. The rounded shape isn't as distinctive as I'd like. That's the case I am making.

Thats kinda funny. How many people here that are kvetchin about no 4K still run to WallyWorld and grab a basketful of $6-$7 480p DVDs?

I sure don't. 1080p is generally better than any 16mm film, and therefore good enough to display 16mm content at full quality. UHD will be good enough to display 35mm film at full quality. That is a lot of content. Some people care, some people don't. Some people were actually perfectly happy with VHS. (Not me.)

Experts predict 4k tvs to reach 61% in North America by 2020, only 10% by 2016

I think declaring 1080p obsolete isn't accurate and won't be for many years

Nice graph, but, the set consisting of the 5% of households that have both a UHD TV and enough wireless bandwidth might also be rich in Apple households as well. Apple wants to appeal to the highly-digital families; a lot more of them will be 4K households by the end of 2016. I can't see why Apple wouldn't make the new device UHD capable, even if the opportunity to use it with 4K commercial content is limited today.

you forgot that Apple does not approve any apps? that is why we have jailbreak for years.

I'm sure ROKU will gladly sell you the device on their shelves which supports 4k and/or UHD video today.

Oh. They haven't announced a 4k device yet (just in January announced that sometime this year they would announce such a device). I guess you'll need to give them a "cute" name too. May I recommend "Croaku"?

So many hyper-entitled hissy fits here today!

I find it very odd you see our OPINONS as "hyper-entitled hissy fits" yet you can't see your own responses for the ultra-egotistical hissy fit that it obviously is to the rest of us. That reason is EGO. Look it up. Take a class on Psychology and learn why your behavior is as bad as the behavior you wish to whine about in us.

meh.. buttons aren't a big deal. It's functional. As for gaming, quite useless.

Was hoping apple would come up with a dope controller, be the trojan gaming horse of our day. The controller not only puts it in casual gaming, I would think it is in ultra light gaming.

However, guess we need to try it to judge
