Does it matter if you are just transmitting audio? Should be plenty of bandwidth.Good catch on this. 802.11ac is actually WiFi 5, but looking at the specs page, Apple downgraded this new HomePod to WiFi 4, aka 802.11n

There's was just a fancier way of saying "Shouldn't have discontinued this... so let's start over..."What a strange, strange time we’re living in.
“With the popularity of HomePod mini, we’ve seen growing interest in even more powerful acoustics achievable in a larger HomePod. We’re thrilled to bring the next generation of HomePod to customers around the world.”
Love that they’re essentially pretending like the larger HomePod has never existed before.
This one can act as a HomeKit+Matter hub and can communicate with Thread devices. It has a newer processor similar to the one on the HomePod Mini that most review say is faster for Siri responses and does more local processing of common requests. This probably does not have the electronic gremlins that made the OG HP tend to burnout or brick itself for no apparent reason. So tell me, what are they doing different now? Other than rerealising a 3 year old product for the same price
It's not just an audio speaker. It's also supposed to be a hub for HomeKit/Matter. While Matter relies more on Thread than WiFi, HomeKit uses WiFi and Matter falls back to WiFi if Thread is not available. Downgrading the original WiFi 5 on the OG to WiFi 4 could be concerning, especially for future HomeKit upgrades where video is considered. Why the downgrade, though? It isn't as if 802.11ac chips are expensive. It makes me wonder if it's a misprint. I didn't think anyone released WiFi 4 gear anymore.Does it matter if you are just transmitting audio? Should be plenty of bandwidth.
Ah bummer. Oh well at least I can get a new pair then. A few weeks ago one of our cats knocked one of the Homepods onto the floor. We were worried we would not be able to have any others at all. At the time it was just the Mini that was available. Can’t mix and match for stereo pair. HomePods can only be stereo paired with same model and generation.
Agreed, except if you and your network is full gear and/or your community has a high density of SSID’sDoes it matter if you are just transmitting audio? Should be plenty of bandwidth.
Original HomePod did sound pretty good actually.I guess they didn't learn the first time around...
i think we should be looking if the product is doing what it is intended to do.Looks like it can read the temperature but apart from that and the chip nothing. How do Apple think this will succeed?
I have 2 cats, the threat level IS REAL. 😼😼Ah bummer. Oh well at least I can get a new pair then. A few weeks ago one of our cats knocked one of the Homepods onto the floor. We were worried we would not be able to have any others at all. At the time it was just the Mini that was available.
Amazon just laid off 10K people from Alexa/Echo team because they are loosing money.Yeah I'll stick to my <£50 Echos that actually seem to work (most of the time) thank you
Give us some examples ?No, I think it's more of a "I would love to buy this if the product was better" type of thing. The choice to not buy a product should be very clear to every reasonable person, but some of us wish that a certain products were better in certain ways — however we are offered only what we're offered.
5Ghz bandwidth is not needed for playing music i guess ?The big question (at least for me) is this:
How will 2 less tweeters and mics be compared to first Gen?
Is this a cost saving measure, or an engineering change for the better?
We won’t know until people get their hands on them and compare them to 1st Gen.
Also, 802.11n aka only 2.4 GHz WiFi, but doesn’t AW 6 7 and 8/Ultra all support 5Ghz?
What makes you think this is 3 year old product ?So tell me, what are they doing different now? Other than rerealising a 3 year old product for the same price
same as what they had done on iPhone...Same exact design as 5 years ago and teeny tiny performance changes lol
Never change Apple... Never change
didn't people read the news that Amazon laid off 10K people from Alexa/Echo team ?That could be the reason. No headlines about your smart speakers listening to your every word — by Amazon and Google themselves or hackers. (I really did see such stories.)
(“Hey, why are there so many browser ads for extra small condoms — was it something I said?”)
I was specifically responding to your claim, “They don't want to make money on the hardware "things".
My response branched from that assumption.
As for me, I don’t agree that Apple should lower prices or, like, sell a “budget” iPhone or Mac. I think price is built into the prestige factor and the “status symbol” that Apple products convey. (And blue word bubbles in text messaging.)
I would never want to see budget iPhones at Dollar General like you can find so many Android phones (almost free if you agree to a contract) — including Samsung models!
That would ruin the brand image of both Apple and iPhone. Not worth it!
And Apple doesn’t simply enrich themselves with the high profits they rake in; they have a proven track record of always plowing profits back into development of ever better products.
I don’t know about lately, but for a while, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was the #1 selling iPhone 14 model by unit sales!
The most expensive model! Sometimes people are willing to pay for quality! (“You get what you pay for.”)
I know Apple Watch is the number one selling watch in the world by unit sales! That includes conventional, non-smart watches like $9.99 Timex or Seiko watches!
The second largest watch seller by unit sales after Apple? Rolex! (And we all know how much they cost!)
Barriers to entry into “The Club.” All those green text bubble plebs. 😂
In some ways, Apple is still the company from 1976 — or the Eighties.
I can tell you some features to make it sell better… more support of other services, not needing another Apple device to set it up, less “ check your iPhone for the answer“ responses, Bluetooth, casting, DLNA support, an aux input, HDMI with Arc support, etc.Give us some examples ?
what features would you like to see in smart speaker ?
Apple is $2T company, i would expect them to release a new product category every year.same as what they had done on iPhone...
Have you seriously not seen all the articles here suggesting that the next HomePod type of device, will feature a display, which would could make it a true Home Hub? There's one example for you. Although my comment wasn't specific to the HomePod. I would love the charging port in the Magic Mouse to move to the front, this way you could charge and use it simultaneously! What magic that would be!Give us some examples ?

Why do we need WiFi 6 to play audio ?Looks like we lose mu-mimo on the 2nd gen.
someone correct me if I’m wrong, the OG had .ac (Wi-Fi 6) WITH mu-mimo
I have OG HomePod and it is working ok with latest software.Already updates have been reported to brick original HomePods. I do not update them.
I have twelve HomePods, I was excited to see what was new. I laughed and said, I have that already. Albeit, they never work and I hardly use them. I do not understand. So it’s exactly the same but with an updated chip? No removable power cord? No aux input? Wut?
Did I miss something?
For folks in areas of congested wifi, like the apt building I grew up in, wifi 6 provides a lot better radio options than n FWIWWhy do we need WiFi 6 to play audio ?
My 2 HomePod minis have noticeable lag compared to every other apple device (multiple macs, iPhones, iPads, 5 Apple TV’s, and more). It’s noticeable and 5Ghz is much snappier5Ghz bandwidth is not needed for playing music i guess ?
