It's all been said...but I'll add to the chorus. I don't "get" it. What exactly makes this a potentially successful product when the old one wasn't?

They couldn't even drop it to $249 (let alone $199, which is what it should be). Does the old one not support Thread?

If you don't like the product, don't buy it. Nobody is forcing you. Seems a lot of people think they have to buy this and are genuinely angry it exists.
No, I think it's more of a "I would love to buy this if the product was better" type of thing. The choice to not buy a product should be very clear to every reasonable person, but some of us wish that a certain products were better in certain ways — however we are offered only what we're offered.

Surprised by this release for sure. Still rocking the OG HomePod and 3 Minis. They all match in color and sound great. The only bothersome thing to me (other than less mics and speakers) is why cant Apple, in all of their trillions of dollars, find a supplier, or design team that keeps the Black / Space Grey colorway consistent across product lines? Midnight, Space Grey, Black, Matte Black, Jet Black... goodness. Show me the design team that is implementing the color "strategy" and I'll show you an accountant in disguise.

Woooow Apple never learns from their mistakes!! 299$! or 379$ in my country 😤 Tim is only focused on price then sales, so sad that apple is going that way😔

I apologize if I missed it. Anyone know yet if you can pair this with minis? I already have a pair of minis, would hate to see them go to waste.
No, you can't "pair" a HomePod with a HomePod mini, but you can sync music through all AirPlay 2 devices if that's what you're asking. Your pair of minis is not obsolete.

So it’s exactly the same but with an updated chip? No removable power cord? No aux input? Wut?

Did I miss something?
Might have a removable cord - the tech specs say in the box “Power Cable”. On the HP Mini page it lists 20w Power Adapter, but not the inbuilt cord, so I wouldn’t expect the built in cable to be listed as an “item”.

Aux input though, that’s hillarious. What product in Apple’s current lineup would you plug in with an aux cable? Literally nothing has direct audio output except for Mac. Not even iPad.

$300 is the disappointing part. I’ll just wait for amazon/others to discount to $250 in a few weeks.

Im pretty sure when they discontinued the previous version they had dropped to $249.99..

Also, my theory is that the previous model had a design flaw which caused the product to be discontinued. I heard a bunch of people had dead units following updates , etc.

Just spotted this in the footnotes: "Sound Recognition will be available in a software update later this spring. Sound Recognition may detect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm sounds and send you notifications when recognised."

That's pretty neat!
That could be!

— Smoke detected in your home!
— Siri, call 911!
— Here's what I found on the internet.

I was really hoping they’d surprise with integrating AirPort Wi-Fi router and mesh capabilities into the HomePod, like regular size is “pro” router and repeater, mini is regular router and repeater or something.

Apple feels (to clarify, an impression) like the Company that pinches recently:
-no ethernet on 3rd gen ATV4k. Have to get the higher SKU.
-1x256 SSD instead of 2x128 on M2 Air, 13”Pro, and probably Mini affecting performance with 8GB of ram base.
-less tweeters in 2nd gen homepod
-screen of inferior quality on 6th gen mini to 5th gen

…what’s next? Rumor of BOE being main supplier of iPhone 15 displays with an ‘inevitable‘ price hike we dodged with iPhone 14 Pro’s in the US at least for 2022, is a bit worrying.

There’s a pattern

’oh it doesnt matter’ argument can be made for any of the above, but the reality is it does matter, if it didn’t matter to them They wouldn’t be doing it.

..they’re Charging more (on average across product lines, obviously not referring to 299 homepod here vs 349 first gen but), and at minimum caring less about ‘attention to details’ as it were ostensibly for the goal of lowering bill of materials

Interestingly the homepod mini comparison now states it includes this. When it launched was this chip not dormant/not listed? Could be exciting if this is the direction they take homepod… more sensors for at home monitoring.
I saw that listed in the comparison and just asked my mini and only get results from other-device Temp sensors....maybe 16.3 will enable this in the Mini?

Per specs page:
  1. Creating a HomePod stereo pair requires two of the same model HomePod speakers, such as two HomePod mini, two HomePod (2nd generation), or two HomePod (1st generation).

Apple releases new HomePod can because of original one does not support Thread protocol. Thread is now used in new smart Home standard - Matter. It is now supported by all platforms, including Google and Amazon. Matter can support WiFi as well but Thread is much better.

Apple HomeKit is dying and will be replaced by Matter. New HomePod and current HomePod Mini have Thread support.

Temperature and Humidity sensors are not new in new HomePod. You can get these sensors supporting Matter protocols for just $20 or less. And you can place many of these in all your rooms.

If you have any HomeKit enabled temperature sensors (like thermostats) you can ask Siri (or HomePod) for the temperature in <HomeKit room> and it works fine now.

They are moving away from few skus to more skus with more options for customers. You’re correct, that’s the pattern.
