Everyone need to get on Apples feedback page and rage about the Mini announcement. The lack of a Mac mini server and quad core option is totally unacceptable and extremely disappointing.

We all know they don't trawl forums looking feedback. You have to go direct. Otherwise all our rage is for naught.

Confused about

Frustrating they highlight PCIe storage when with all the other standard features, but you have to do a BTO upgrade to get PCIe storage.

Can someone explain the "PCIe-based flash storage" part? I'm not getting that at all.

I'm only guessing here but I would say instead of 2x 2.5" SATA bays like the previous generation, this generation has 1x PCIe flash storage bay and 1x 2.5" SATA bay in it's place. However you can only spec a drive to be in one or the other from the factory.

Thinking about the lack of quad core this time around, I think it might have to do with Iris vs Iris Pro. Is there even a mobile quad core Haswell i7 without Iris Pro? How much more are the Haswell quad parts than the Ivy Bridge ones?

It's a real shame in this case because I would've loved to have gotten a Mini with a Iris Pro last year when I was buying a Mini. The mini isn't a fantastic gaming box, but it's still pretty decent for what it is. An Iris Pro would push it up in both GPU performance and CPU performance wise.

So I can still add a 2nd drive while I'm upgrading my RAM?..

I don't think it will be that bad.. The dual core i7 still clocks in at 3.0ghz (3.5 with turbo boost), That and being a newer generation CPU means it should still return decent benchmarks. Perhaps not as good as the higher end models of the previous generation, but likely not so far off either..

maybe he wants to play elite dangerous... requires quad core.

Having no quad core i7 option is a huge disappointment. Literally the only thing I use my Mac mini for is video encoding (Handbrake) and transcoding (Plex). Losing half the physical cores is definitely going to have an impact on video encoding times, as well as the number of simultaneous transcodes the computer can handle.

We'll have to wait for the testing figures to start rolling out, but this may be the first Mac that is appreciably slower than its predecessor. I currently have the 2.6GHz quad core i7, and, unless Apple moves back to a quad core option for the next iteration of this machine, it will be my last Apple desktop.

2012
2.3GHz i7
4GB RAM
1 TB Fusion
$1049

2014
3.0 GHz i7
8GB RAM
1 TB Fusion
$1199

Other than Iris and clock speed, what are you really getting for the extra $150? This refresh sucks.:( I was looking forward to a reason to upgrade but it looks like I'll be hanging on to my 2012.

And that 1.4GHZ processor is turning out to be popular with fellows over at Apple.

2.3GHz i7 - quad core

2014
3.0 GHz i7 - dual core

;)

Looks to be more geared toward business. I think if it had quad core processors it would start competing with the iMac. The purpose of the mac mini is to entice switchers and get them into the enterprise market where high end graphics aren't necessary.

Exactly although I figured you still would have had to do a BTO to get a decent amt of PCIe flash storage.

They're really blurring the line for performance -- should I get a new Mac Mini or a new iPhone 6 ?

And, no Server edition anymore. Now, they don't market any device WITH Server OS X any longer. I wonder how much longer there will even be a OS X Server?

I wouldn't mind the igpu upgrade but other than that no desire to upgrade from previous model. I'm better off putting a 500gb SSD in mine instead. Just waiting for prices to come down a bit more. I almost bit a few times but not quite.

Looks like Ives (thankfully) didn't have a hand on this update.
I mean it's too bad there's no quad core, but, I'm happy they didn't do a big redesign which inevitably would have meant soldered ram, non standard storage, etc.

According to Apple site, the Mini appears to have soldered RAM since it says it is upgradeable only at the online Apple store.
