what exactly are we apologizing for? It's hardly news if one says something less than a day before the formal announcement. That's not useful. Might have been useful if he had been saying it months ago, but he wasn't.
It's so hard for some people to admit - yes, I was wrong, X - was right.
Keep waiting for an apology, not all of us worship Gurman.
No one worships him, but such comments say more about you then about him or anyone else.

LOL so you are now the arbitrator of what is based on reality or not? Btw, not my wild guess.
Provide source then if it's not you. I will happily read about it and retract my statements.

Just wanted to mention that you can get a base Mini M4 for $499 (EDU) and add 2TB internally from AliExpress for about $180-ish ... and all in for around $700-ish depending upon sales tax it's an incredible machine and value (16gb RAM/2TB SSD)

Takes a touch of doing, but the install is super easy

(this is what I'm running)
True but that’s a little beyond my skill level, and tbh not something I’d be interested in doing. I did replace the ram in my mini though, not sure if you still can on the new ones.

Apple really doesn't want us buying Max Studios. Every time someone buys a M4 Max Studio Apple will be upset they didn't instead buy a higher margin M4 Max Macbook Pro.

I had told myself they needed more technical time to finish the M4 Ultra, but no, the exact same chip released 4 months later. Can't risk hurting Macbook Pro sales!

I was waiting for a M4 Max Studio, and thats what I will get (Upper M4 Max with 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD).
However, the Studio Display is putting me off. I was hoping it would be upgraded alongside the Mac Studio to support TB5 and have additional USB4 ports.......and an on/off button!

I predict a sales bump of the Mac Mini M4 Pro as people, me for instance, no longer have to wait for this Studio announcement before making a purchasing decision.

Personally I find the announced configurations to be quite strange & confusing, particularly the M3 Ultra option. Clearly I'm not the only one. But I'll probably wait and watch the reviews and see how this all shakes out.

The Dell Ultrasharp 32" 8K TB5 monitor is the the best TB5 monitor for Macs.

Asus has one, but it's capped at 1080p

Dude. YOU already replied to the source. Why don't YOU quote where I said anything about the m5 Max memory. Go ahead. I will wait. Oh right, you can't. You are shooting from the hip so much you can't even remember what you have replied to or to whom.

And, what the heck was I WRONG about? That gurman only got it 'right' the day before the formal announcement? Oh geez, I am RIGHT about that. So hard for some people to apply reading skills apparently. But I will say it again, NOT IMPRESSED THAT GURMAN ONLY GOT IT RIGHT LITERALLY THE DAY BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT.

Feel free to point out what I have said about Gurman that was wrong. You can't. Factually I have been correct. My opinion is the facts don't support the praise you give him. sorry to have offended you with that. You must have thin skin. :)

So question for those of us who were waiting for the M4 Max Studio (I love lots of things about this update).

How are people feeling about the standard base model vs the next standard step up?
  1. Apple M4 Max chip with 14‑core CPU, 32‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine: 36GB, 512GB SSD for $1999
  2. Apple M4 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine; 48GB, 512GB SSD for $2499
I understand that many will upgrade the SSD, but that's not the question here. Unlike the "it's just a glorified MBP" crowd, I love having all the expansion ports and serious cooling that a desktop brings. But are we better putting the $500 difference between these two models aside for the next upgrade in a couple of years and making do with 36GB and lower CPU/GPU specs in our daily workflow?

Say what you want about Intel, AMD and Nvidia. At least these manufactures are not confusing with their releases per. year
Uh… what on earth are you talking about?
Intel * Almost always* has their workstation class chips a generation behind their mobile ones, even during the Apple days.
Mobile Ivybridge: June 2012
Mobile Haswell: June 2013

Desktop Ivybridge: September 2013
Desktop Haswell: didn’t start shipping in large quantities until 2015, almost 2 years after the mobile ones.

This is new to Apple sure, but is pretty normal industry wide.
Mobile chips move quicker because they are easier to develop, easier to produce and have significantly higher demand.

You can't upgrade the base model to 64GB RAM without a processor upgrade now, so this is a price hike overall. Might just buy a refurb M2 Studio now instead.
But at least you don't have to upgrade the ssd too, as with the macbook pro..

It's so incredibly easy -- anyone can do it, truly

It doesn't sound like you need to go to all that trouble to create a new internal drive. You'd be fine with the base $499 Mini. For more storage, you could buy any inexpensive external SSD and connect it via USB. That's it. The people posting in here about needing solutions from AliExpress, etc., are people who want to install MacOS on a drive and use it as the new internal drive. That is much more complicated and is only for specific purposes that don't apply to your situation.

So in summary: new $499 mini, external SSD ($50-$150?), and you have a much nicer machine at a great price, no extra technical expertise required.

Up until the M2 cycle everything was uniform with the launch
- Spring = MacBook Air with Base M-Series
- Fall [Oct] = Macbook Pros with M-Pro and M-Max Series
- WWDC following year = Previous year M-Ultra

Now it's just all kinds of messed.
This is just false, and it only takes two seconds of research to figure that out.
The MacBook Air was not always announced in the spring. In fact, the only times it has ever been announced in the spring were in 2014, 2015, 2020 (Intel) and the latest two generations.
The M1 Air and Pro were both announced in the fall.
Only one ultra chip was announced at WWDC, the M2 Ultra.
M1Ultra was announced on March 8, 2022, at a special event mostly dedicated to the iPhone SE.

TLDR: there really is no pattern. There hasn’t been, and they’re probably won’t be.
The regular M chips have been announced in November, June, October and May.
The Pro/Max chips have been announced in October, January, October and November.
The Ultra chips have been announced in March, June and March again.

For some a powerful desktop in 2025 can be the $499 Mac Mini

With Apple Silicon users you can not. It is debatable that Apple users are more intelligent than PC users in that they know what they need and buy what they need the first time.
If your needs are met by a mac mini, then it's a great time for computers!

I am not sure it sucks...Perhaps we don't have all the permutation of options and/or the prices don't scale the way we want but the technology available today is amazing...

The onboard CPU of a typical NVMe drive is on the order of an iPhone 5 and new desktops rival the supercomputers used to probe the universe not that long ago.
I can never have enough power. NEVER!

So as a user who has all USB-C devices, how is that nice for me? Do you also still want ADB and SCSI on your Mac?

This nonsense needs to stop. There is not a single reason to keep USB-A around. USB-C was made mandatory in the EU on mobile devices and as much as I hate their mandates, maybe it’s time to enforce this on all devices because it’s getting ridiculous.
There are software license USB dongles that behave weird when not directly plugged into the computer, and of course they are still USB-A, some of them were made ages ago. The Mac Pro even has an internal USB-A port on the logic board for this purpose.

Also a lot of desk-bound peripherals are also still USB-A, namely RF-dongles for keyboards and mouse, which also behave better if directly plugged.

It all boils down to how much the increase in productivity with an M3 Ultra is to your bottom line. You have an M1 Max, the M4 Max is out now, I’m not sure why the complaining? You obviously couldn’t justify the M1 Ultra when you bought your Mac Studio, but you could justify an M4 Ultra Studio now, but just not an M3 Ultra? Sounds like you can’t justify either and the M4 Max would work just fine, but you need to have something to gripe about on this thread. The M4 Max is eminently more capable compared to an M1 Max. Your math is adding up to clickbait.
What I can or won’t justify is none of your business. I didn’t ask for your opinion on my purchases. FYI, the word clickbait doesn’t mean what you think it means.

People only remember when Gurman's rumors don't come true but forget about when they do. It's more fun to be snide and cynical.

Your last statement is ironic given the criticism you are leveling. And I think the Gurman supporters are missing the point, Gurman is mostly 'right' the day before a formal announcement, or maybe a week before. That's just not that useful for timing. I literally slept overnight and got the actual announcement. A few months ahead is useful, and he is often inaccurate at that point. That's what some people take into consideration, and hence why often take anything he says a few months out with a huge grain of salt. Sorry if you think thats snide or cynical, I think its just realistic.

Well, that's both confusing and disappointing. I was ready to ditch my M2 Ultra for an M4 Ultra, which should have been comfortably more than double the performance across the board. Now we have this M3 Ultra, which is only 1.5x the M2 Ultra's CPU (meh) and around double the GPU (albeit with hardware raytracing). So really not sure this is the upgrade I want for working in Blender, given that the full-fat version is still mightily expensive. And if they actually release an M4 Ultra Mac Pro later in the year, I'd kick myself black and blue. Groan.
