Would anybody just opt to spend $200 more on a 14" MacBook pro m4 considering the new m4 air i just specked out is only $200 cheaper?

I do light recording with my guitar and will be doing some light video editing for youtube. not sure i really need the 3 thunderbolt ports or other other inputs but at a $200 difference, i don't see why i shouldn't just get the pro?

thoughts?
The screen will be a step up. The weight should be looked at if you have to lug it around, do you need the extra ports? Otherwise it’s really up to you.

Sure, and then spend another $200 to simply upgrade the memory. And then another $200 to simply upgrade the storage. And then another $200 to upgrade the CPU. And then another $200... You get the idea I'm sure. :D

Hey, it’s not getting the lower price in Europe..!
It’s still starting at 1610 USD for the 15” in Europe compared to 1200 in the USA.

I’m so tempted though. I think I can afford it. Gotta see it next to the newest competitors though as they have gone through quite a lot of improvements and changes in recent years.

Sweet color too. Now I’m definitely glad I didn’t go for a boring looking Pro.
The 15-inch did not get a price cut in the U.S. Only the 13-inch did.

While mine is in "good" condition, the battery is shot and it's fairly slow (with a near maxed out hard drive). Very overdue, the trade in quote is $125 though
Well I just look at the trade in value now at $125 until April 2 - I may go with it since I also get a military vet discount.

MBPs are superior in every way except weight. Display, speakers, ports, brightness, bandwidth, available RAM, etc.

None of that has mattered to me except ports. I use it docked in clamshell mode 90% of the time when home, and even when it's not, the screen isn't better enough to convince me to spend more $.

Got a Sky Blue one ordered for the wife: 15", 24 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. Although, I'm considering a MBP for the price. Choices. The light blue color is a draw, as is the slightly lower weight of the MBA.

When you consider the amount of inflation that has happened in the last three years and the threat/reality of tariffs being imposed, I actually think it is a bit incredible that the base M4 MBA is $999. Between this and the base M4 mini being $599 Apple is coming hard for increased market share. These machines are going to move the needle in a big way. And with the power of the M4 chip in them, these are going to be powerful enough for casual use for a long time. Once they start to really trickle into the used market in four years or so, wow Apple is going to grow its user base significantly.

How have you got them specced? At 16/512, it’s $400 difference for the 13”. But maybe you’re talking about the 15”?

I’m sympathetic to the argument that $200 is not that much difference for a computer you’re probably keeping at least 3-5 years, but at the same time, why spend money that won’t change your experience at all?

Honestly, it sounds like either would be totally fine for you, so probably no wrong choice here.

Honestly, I think it's easy to be a critic but Apple hit a home run with this one. 16GB RAM Standard, M4 chip is a beast. Upgrade storage and automatically upgrades the chip to the non-binned version. If you plan on a 16GB/512GB at $1199 is a hell of a machine. You simply aren't going to get anywhere near the performance in a similarly spec Windows machine.

For education purchasers, that is $1099. I couldn't think of a better all-rounder laptop for college students (except for a few who need specific hardware). The CMO of my publicly traded company uses an M3 MBA as her only device. She refuses to use anything else. These are absolutely excellent machines.

Is it worthwhile upgrading to the new MBA? I've currently got a 15" 2016 MacBook Pro (touchbar)
Processor: 2.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Storage: 250gb
Graphics: Radeon Pro 450 2 GB; Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB

I dabble in statistics & data analysis, usually in excel or SPSS with large datasets. Wanting ensure it will pump through analyses.

How is ditching your most popular colour option understandable? Across the board Apple’s colour options are hideous. Everything seems geared towards colours that women like. I’m sick of pastel colours with stupid names.
It wasn’t the most popular. Starlight and Midnight were. That’s probably why they got rid of it.

A new MBA would rip through it with great ease. You would definitely find this a nice upgrade.

Purchase a M4 MBA to replace my M1 MBA. I will be set for another 4-5 years.
I am disappointed for M4 MacBook Air users to lack another thunderbolt port, a 600 nits brightness, no nano texture option and no 20h of battery.

UK / Euro purchasers get stronger purchase protection with longer warranties mandated by law. This increases the price for UK / Euro customers.
That’s not strictly true. Apple has maintained a $1=£1 price conversion for some time regardless of the actual exchange rate. Also the consumer protection laws do not replace Apple warranties which U.K. customers still have to buy.

You haven't noticed that the rest of the PC industry has been boldly moving in reverse over the past decade. It is fairly clear that Windows 11 refers to 2011.

I know, I support Windows 11 clients at work. Yes, my life is a nightmare.
You mean trying to catch up to Mac’s with the arm processors that do okay on tasks not requiring good graphics hardware, but still lags on number crunching. Yea windows is a mess. My work machine recently upgraded to 24 H2 and broke printing.

So, they killed Space Gray, their most popular color and the perfect shade of graphite as it's not too light, not too dark, conceals prints, and softens some of the stark contrast between the keyboard and chassis giving an overall understated, yet industrial, cool look, and replaced it with another shade of blue?

I guess Space Black is just way too Pro for an Air.

So now the choices are Silver, Gold-Tinted Silver, Blue-Tinted Silver, and Dark Blue. Did they ever give Midnight the new coating to address finger prints?
It was not their most popular color. Far from it. Midnight and Starlight were the best selling colors for the M3.
