All good stuff but I'd question the validity of any research that places much onus on the data stored in the Apple Health app, based on the woeful inaccuracy and inconsistency I see recorded in mine.
All research data is flawed. Health Kit can only hope to make it less flawed and increase the quantity of good information, so that the errors can be weeded out or ignored through statistical analysis. Compared to surveys conducted by many people by interviewing many others, there's little doubt that Health Kit is more accurate. It's certainly providing more data.

Apple's core business is (supposed to be) selling hardware. Give away the software to facilitate hardware sales.

In the iMac forum. Expressing anger about chintzy hard drives.;)

It's a stage kids in high school need to go through - a rite of passage to enter their Junior year.

Fortunately, older folk understand Apple provides options. Have simple/modest needs and aren't into tech and will likely not embark on a search to find the next prime number? Get the base unit. Need faster storage. Pay a bit more (amounting to pennies a day over the life of the computer) and select a faster/denser option.

The high school folk will learn how that works when they buy their first new car. Many people don't need or want to pay for a V8 or even a V6 - and a 4 cylinder meets their needs fine. Of course the guys still in high school will have none of that. Greedy Chevrolet and Ford! Holding a gun to our heads and making us pay for a REAL ENGINE! #failfailfail

Not to be too pessimistic and cynical, but it feels like autism was added because it is something that was in the news recently. There are more pressing and debilitating conditions that should be given priority.

This kind of research will have been in planning for several months prior to today's announcement, so any recent news stories probably won't have affected today's announcement.

Every health condition is important to someone. Some affect many more than others - but some are better suited than others to iPhone and Apple Watch-based research. It's early days - I can't wait to see where this kind of research goes next.

Or copied and pasted it better. Nice work.
Plagiarism?..... :D

On topic, awesome to see these kinds of new possibilities in development, and I believe this is only the tip of the iceberg. Smartphones and wearables will also revolutionize the medical profession with regards to diagnostics and first-line treatment.

Yes, and we might even get into preventative medicine. What will happen to people's eating habits when their phone or watch can tell them precisely what that cake or ice cream just did to their blood sugar level or their blood pressure?

Sadly, probably nothing.

Pretty awesome the potential HealthKit brings along with the access to millions assisting in the research.

There would be millions - perhaps billions - more if it was outside the US. I can sort of understand, if not agree with, the entertainment industry's region locking, but what possible objection could there be to this?

Legal. Each country has its own ministry of health, regulations etc.

I use various apps to record my activity, heart rate, sleep, weight, etc, most - probably all, I haven't checked and don't care - are based outside my country. Many have storage and sharing options, some can automatically post to Facebook...

Please excuse my stupidity, but I just can't see what's different about this. I'd rather contribute to science, for the good of people all over the world. That's why my Mac mini sits running World Community Grid on BOINC 24/7 (running largely off my solar panels).

I want to like what they are doing here, but a lot of the data required to accurately study epilepsy I'm not honestly sure the Apple watch can do. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with. They should probably check out others who have already made great strides in terms of monitoring for epilepsy.

https://www.empatica.com/product-embrace-features
According to what I read here, they are only trying to see if they can "detect the onset and duration of seizures" which is far different from studying causality. I am an epileptic, BTW, so I was initially interested, but it is not applicable in my case. I will also be interested in their findings, and your link was just what I was thinking about: even if they are successful, it is asking lot for someone to buy an Apple Watch. Empatica does look like they have a head start here, and maybe they will be able to hook into ResearchKit at some time.

why would i want medical stuff on a public internet ?

i thought that was against HIPPA act.. if it wasn't just between doctors, then i would be more concern with it being in the wrong hands.

Agreed. But what on earth does that have to do with my post?

Its the alternate wording for "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". I figured since you were disappointed at the lack of posts being negative and the failings of those who try to construe evil in all Apple does, that I would add a cryptic remark that can appease people on both sides.

How active was I last Friday? 86,000 steps apparently - I don't think so. Out of the 5 bike rides I've done in the last 7 days, Health just seems to have decided to import 2 of them.

Who cares were it is stored? The important thing is, how was it acquired?
And so I'd start by asking: were those measurements you complain about recorded by your unaided phone, with stock apps, maybe without even setting the phone in any special holder?
I hope not, because complaining about bad results would then be a lot of nerve.

For many, you're right, but the watch has already gotten lots of people to get up and walk around once an hour. If it starts telling them how much that doughnut increased their probability of a heart attack it might get them to eat a few less each week.

I assume, and I might be completely incorrect, that there are several question related to data collection (sending health info from one country to another), usage (medical field), and international law.
If you think about it, the stated function is research and medical, which are two heavily regulated fields. I am sure that "fitness" info are seen by the law as vastly different than "medical" info.
