So you figure doctors and scientist just whip these studies up in a couple weeks according to what is trending on the news?

Common, do you think that I would post this if I didn't understand both business and science? I conducted medical studies myself. Apple has numerous studies that they could align themselves with and they chose ones that will resonate in the media. Issue of autism and vaccinations has been in the news for the past several years. With that said, I never stated that I don't encourage additional studies in all areas of health research.

All good stuff but I'd question the validity of any research that places much onus on the data stored in the Apple Health app, based on the woeful inaccuracy and inconsistency I see recorded in mine.

How active was I last Friday? 86,000 steps apparently - I don't think so. Out of the 5 bike rides I've done in the last 7 days, Health just seems to have decided to import 2 of them.

Never had any issues, actually been most precise device of all.
I had Fitbit for nearly a year or so, then bought Garmin (used them at the same time while getting used to new Garmin "thing"), very disliked Garmin so returned it after a month and then bought Apple Watch (still wear my Fitbit, now just because I'm sooo used to it as a accessory ;) )

I do believe if you are using a watch, you probably are not setting up workouts, just use it as is. It's very important because it doesn't have internal GPS and there isn't enough hand movement when cycling for it to register any activity.
If you are using your iPhone only instead. Once again, are you using any cycling app or just rely on your phone to register tiny movements. If you are using 3rd party app, try different one! (I use Runtastic, used Strava in the past) But if you are using your phone only - place it somewhere else so it can register your movement. If it's somewhere where your body isn't moving enough it will believe that you are having a nap in your sofa due to the lack of movement. ;)
But if you believe that you are doing everything correctly - make an appointment with Apple People to get your device checked out.

I assume, and I might be completely incorrect, that there are several question related to data collection (sending health info from one country to another), usage (medical field), and international law.
If you think about it, the stated function is research and medical, which are two heavily regulated fields. I am sure that "fitness" info are seen by the law as vastly different than "medical" info.

You're probably right, but there is certainly a lot of overlap. Heart rate is an obvious one, and I'm sure weight is correlated with diabetes.

I agree with you... but even Apple can't get around government's bureaucracy... :(

Not to be too pessimistic and cynical, but it feels like autism was added because it is something that was in the news recently. There are more pressing and debilitating conditions that should be given priority.
Except this is pessimisstic. I am an OT and a gadget geek and I work with kids with autism. You have no idea how effective and important some of the apps for this population are. It's not just something in the news to them. These apps, in my field and for families who live with this everyday are a blessing. It allows this population to integrate with their social environments. This kind of research can potentially lead to earlier intervention and studies show that the earlier the intervention the more successful they are at becoming valuable members of society. You could argue in fact that this is exactly the right population these devices and such apps and research should be spent on because it has one of the largest impacts. I know nonverbals who cant live without their devices as it allows them to communicate. Sometimes a favourite game or movie cna be an instant calming grace when they're in a unfamiliar place and begin crying or raging because they don't know how to react to the new stimuli.

So yah. any company that invests their talents into programming research kits and api's for developing apps that make lives of a population with a certain disability is useful and the argument there are more debilitating conditions is rather ignorant.
