Or you can sell them on eBay. The average price for 2666MHz 4GB DDR4 SODIMMs on eBay.ca seems to be around 60~80$CAD for two 4GB modules. Still far from the 240$CAD Apple are asking to upgrade to 16GB but nobody is going to throw perfectly good RAM in the trash.

Many others, like OWC, will not only sell you the RAM but buy back the old stuff too.

Why would you need "authorized technician" to do it? Anyone that can follow simple instructions could do it in a few mins.....

Dont buy into the "you need a professional" crap.
It's the warranty which would worry me.

I just chatted with Apple about the RAM upgrade.

So it can be done, but it’s not user accessible like the 27” iMac since the Mac Mini needs to be opened up to be upgraded. So we recommend having an authorized technician handle it.
You can totally do it, but if any is damaged it will void the warranty. Does this help clarify?

Ok so I can do it but if I break it, the warranty is voided

That is correct!

sooo that's all ? it took them ages to release this "update", don't get me wrong but this thing is a pile of garbage for this price tag. I can build a far more powerful hackintosh for $799 which i can upgrade + it won't throttle and besides all that the mac line up is a mess why do i need a macbook when they released a macbook air with almost better specs + at a better price tag and why would i even buy a mac air when i can get a more powerful pro for 100$ more ???

ipad != mac/computer APPLE!

So the thunderbolt port will handle audio in?
You don't even want to know how many audio channels a Thunderbolt port can handle. ;)

... now that I said that, I'm curious about how many audio channels a Thunderbolt port could handle.

---

And here is the answer:

Q: What is the maximum number of audio channels available to and from the computer?

Connection, Sample rate, Channels (in and out)
Thunderbolt / USB3, 44.1 to 96 kHz, 128
Thunderbolt / USB3, 176.4 or 192 kHz, 64
USB2*, 44.1 or 48 kHz, 64
USB2*, 88.2 or 96 kHz, 32
USB2*, 176.4 or 192 kHz, 24
*The 624 and 8A provide 72, 36 and 24 channels over USB2 connection at respective sample rates.

---

And I'm guessing there is TB2/TB3 devices that allow even more channels.

This seems to need a thread on it's own. Consensus is.
Ram: Yes, but strongly suggested to have an authorized technician do the work.
SSD: No, it's soldered in.

So ram is not as easy to upgrade compared to years past? I’ve done it in my previous macs so it can’t be too difficult.

Wait for the iFixit teardown.

Thank you, thank you so much, this would be huge deal breaker for me, RAM prices are insane!

This needs to be pinned somewhere!

Upgrading the RAM would only impact the RAM part of the warranty, if your upgraded RAM malfunctioned, thats on you. Thats all.
That's fair to me. I would think that it's similar to car upgrades where if it can't be proven the upgrade broke something, the warranty would apply.

From the photo, it seems you'll need to remove the fan in order to access the two SODIMM slots.

Did I hear that right??? Upgradable RAM??? And the specs are great! I know a few people who want to a buy a new Mac desktop and I think I'll be able to convince them to get this!:D

The ram is very much upgradable. Look at the teardown images on Apple's website. Those are clearly removable. The SSD is soldiered though so no luck there. Apple uses pretty fast SSDs so it's a good compromise imho. You can get Ram way cheaper elsewhere.

Yep so true. When a user can build a Hackintosh for under $1,000 that destroys a Mac spec wise than Apple is seriously doing something wrong.

Okay. I can’t see that being a big ordeal.

So, they purposely did it to get even more money from you (since they charge people to become Apple techs) and those techs then charge you.

I have a feeling that is their standard line. The ram or harddrive have probably never been easily replaceable according to Apple. Given what the box looks like, it looks like the last model in terms of access and taking it apart.

Apple should (but won't) offer a base model "Tinkerer's Edition" Mac mini for $399, with empty upgradable: CPU socket, SODIMM memory slots & empty NVMe M.2 SSD slot.
Plus a three item bundle: user's choice of CPU, SSD & memory sold separately, at "similar to Newegg" prices.
In other words: similar to a "bare bones" Intel NUC, but also macOS compatible.
And maybe: include a mini tool kit for accessing the internals, plus a "free" space grey keyboard & mouse.

The price in Europe is...:

And this is in Germany.
In "poorer countries" it will be even higher.

No one would pay that though, you'd just do it on your on for half the price. Assuming you could find the 32GB sticks.

It's already been confirmed that it's not very user-upgradable and they tell you to use an Apple tech OR you will void your warranty if anything goes wrong. I upgraded the RAM on my 2011 Mac mini and my Late 2015 27" 5K iMac without any issues, because they designed it so the RAM could be easily upgraded.... this isn't the case with this new Mac mini. And the SSD? Yeah, it's not user upgradable at all and the cheap b a s t a r d s only give you 128GB to start: that's a sick joke and an utter insult to their customers.

Where is the best place to buy the ram? Mac Mall?

Since you're asking - I prefer Crucial.

I'd wait and make sure there isn't warranty voiding involved before placing an order if you intend to upgrade the ram right away? I'm looking at 16GB now and 32GB next year, assuming there isn't any warranty void if opened BS. Wish the SSD was upgradable... As long as it will run booted from TB3 attached SSD it won't matter that much?

I would buy this, but it's never going to happen. If it did, it would be priced such that the pre-built Mac was cheaper at every price point.
